SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As a way to celebrate military members and their families this weekend, San Diego County Animal Services will waive adoption fees.From May 24 to 26, the department will take part in the Animals for Armed Forces adoption event to offer the free adoptions for cats, dogs, and rabbits. Active duty, reserve, and veterans from the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, and National Guard and their immediate family are eligible for the promotion.RELATED: Memorial Day ceremonies and events in San DiegoCounty Animal Services’ Carlsbad and Bonita locations will also include free vaccinations, spay or neuter, a microchip, licensing, and a veterinary exam with adoptions.“This is the County’s way of saying thank you for all the sacrifices the military and their families make to keep us safe,” County Animal Services Director Dan DeSousa said. “And sometimes these adoptions have the effect of the two rescuing each other.”Those interested in adopting a pet must show photo identification and at least one of the following forms of ID: A military ID, Dependent ID, DD-214 and driver’s license or NGB Form 22.The adoption event runs from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day of the event. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Coronavirus hospitalizations in San Diego County have doubled in the past two weeks. As cases continue to soar through the country many hospitals are being pushed to their limits.Nurses at Paradise Valley Hospital have seen some of the worst cases of COVID-19. In a new series of PSA videos, frontline workers like Rochielle Jocson are urging everyone to keep fighting.Jocson spends the night shift in the Emergency Room and Intensive Care Unit treating patients who are struggling to survive.“I get scared honestly,” said Jocson. “I don’t want to bring it home to my family.”For the past eight months, she’s suppressed exhaustion and conquered fear.“Sometimes it’s just not within your hands and you cry it out,” said Jocson. “Let it all out, take a deep breath and do it another day.”But the situation is only getting worse.In a press conference Thursday, Supervisor Nathan Fletcher says the number of COVID-related hospitalizations have doubled in the county over the last two weeks. County hospital beds are now inching towards 80% capacity.Jocson says they’re fully staffed and have enough supplies at Paradise Valley for now, but she knows the virus is unpredictable.“Resources are limited. We don’t know when the supplies are going to last,” said Jocson.She lives through the wrath of COVID every day and knows some people still aren’t listening to the warnings.“It’s heartbreaking to just see people not follow safety precautions,” said Jocson. “It’s like a punch in the gut so-to-speak to us healthcare workers.”She’s hoping to change that with a simple message.“You may be okay but the next person that you’re giving it to, will they be okay?” said Jocson.While the road ahead will still be long, there’s nowhere else she would rather be.“That’s why we keep going when at times we want to give up,” said Jocson. “Because you have that one patient that makes it worth it.”Paradise Valley Hospital tells ABC 10News their ICU is still under capacity. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the temperature rises and more businesses, like movie theaters, are reopening San Diegans and people from neighboring counties are flocking to get a dose of normalcy."We sold out today which is great news for everyone, we sold out today very quickly." General Manager of Theater Box Donnie Eversole said.He said it was wonderful 'being home' back in the theater, "we haven't been in the theater for 90 to 120 days so it's like a new adventure."He said it helps that the week they opened, two blockbusters, Christopher Nolan's Tenet and Bill and Ted Face the Music, are screening.While they're capped at 25% Eversole said you can make sure you claim your seat by reserving online. They are working to add more showtimes while abiding by the new guidelines.Last time San Diego had sweeping reopenings, there was a huge spike in coronavirus cases. Eversole said they are doing everything they cna to prevent another spike, "every cdc guideline is followed to the letter, we do not bend, we do not break. We follow the rules because not only is our business affected, everyone else is and we want to make sure everyone is getting a fair shake and able to recoup some of the summer that's been lost."San Diego is the only lower tier county in Southern California with the ability to have so many re-openings, drawing attention from our neighbors.Supervisor Nathan Fletcher spoke at Wednesday's press conference, urging everyone to do their part to prevent another spike, "One of the most dangerous settings is indoor gatherings, it is house parties, it is people gathering together in an indoor setting and there really is no way for us to enforce that or prevent that other than the public's help and cooperation."He said if there are gatherings and another spike in cases, businesses, like Theater Box, could shut down once again. 1857

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - California state Assemblyman and San Deigo mayoral candidate Todd Gloria said he received serious threats of physical violence through social media Wednesday evening.Officials from Gloria's campaign said Thursday that the threats have been reported to the San Diego Police Department and are being investigated. ABC 10News reached out to SDPD Thursday regarding the threats, but the department did not immediately respond.Gloria's campaign said the threats come after former San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio flooded voters with texts attacking Gloria for his support of SB-145.The bill lets a judge decide whether to force someone to register as a sex offender in certain circumstances after having sex with a minor. The bill is meant to end discrimination against LGBTQ individuals.RELATED: Ad accuses Barbara Bry of sleeping on the jobGloria said DeMaio's texts to voters are an effort to support Gloria's opponent in the mayoral race, City Councilmember Barbara Bry. Demaio has said he has not endorsed Bry.Gloria issued the following statement on Thursday regarding the threats:"Since KUSI and Carl DeMaio started knowingly misinforming voters about SB-145 in an effort to support my opponent, I have received multiple messages threatening physical violence. After receiving one last night brandishing a gun, it is clear that my campaign team and I must take this seriously. As such, we have reported the threats to the San Diego Police Department, and they are currently investigating.While I refuse to let this paralyze our campaign, voters deserve to know that this is what Barbara Bry's campaign is inspiring. Her campaign is bringing out the worst of who we are. We are so much better than this, and San Diegans should hold her and her campaign accountable this November."In response, Bry's campaign issued the following statement:"Violence and threats of violence have no place in a civil society, and we must all condemn anyone who promotes such activity.However, it's outrageous that Todd Gloria is blaming me while his supporters are promoting political ads that have resulted in numerous personal threats against me and my campaign. Mr. Gloria remained silent as it relates to his own supporters. He appears to be blaming me for the actions of someone with whom he has had a personal feud for more than a decade.Carl DeMaio has no involvement in my campaign and has not endorsed me. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Choir members in San Diego have made it their mission to use music to bring comfort to people nearing the end of their lives.Threshold Choir's director, Nadean Burington, started the local chapter in 2011.  It is an a cappella choir that sings for and with those at the thresholds of life.  They sing at the bedside at San Diego hospices, institutions, and private homes.Recently, doctors diagnosed Burington with stage four cancer. She has recently started requesting the choir's services.“It's wonderful. It's a gift back to me now for what I've given to help start it,” Burington said. “I feel well at this point but I want to the music continue for as long as possible.”Burington says the next directors have been picked out.
