Racial disparities and bias in health care can be a double whammy for multi-generational families of color — specifically when Black men are the caregivers."We tend to think of the male caregiver as that individual that comes helicoptering in and pays the bills or take care of yard work. But that's not all that male family caregivers do," said Rita Choula, the director of caregiving at the AARP Public Policy Institute.AARP has found that there are nearly 3 million African-American men taking care of an adult family member or non-relative — usually someone with memory, emotional or mental health conditions.Conversations with those caregivers reveal the unique challenges and stereotypes they face, including health care bias."If he is going into a situation with an understanding that there may be a bias — when we talk about higher levels of stress, that would be one thing that could cause more stress for an African American male caregiver," Choula said.Black men are also less likely to ask for help, which can add to the stress. They're often still working essential jobs and facing financial impacts due to tough choices about balancing careers with their caregiving responsibilities.That stress has been amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic, as caregivers now face the risk of bringing the virus home to loved ones.But these Black men are dedicated. A majority of all African-American caregivers find a sense of purpose or meaning in that role — more so than other caregivers."Increasingly, male family caregivers are bathing their mothers. That's a difficult thing," Choula said. RAMONA, CA (KGTV) -- Thanks to the San Diego Humane Society's Project Wildlife, an orphaned mountain lion pup has a second chance at life. The Humane Society acquired the Fund for Animals Wildlife Center in Ramona on September 1st, and the very next day, the 12 week old mountain lion pup was their very first patient."We got a call from California Fish and Wildlife," says Project Wildlife Director Andy Blue. "That a firefighter had found a mountain lion cub in distress up near Idyllwild."The female cub was found semi-conscious, extremely emaciated, and dehydrated."When she first arrived here in Ramona, she appeared to be in pretty bad shape, and I wasn't sure she was going to survive."That's when the Project Wildlife team stepped in and provided the cub life saving treatment."We immediately gave her critical care supplies, got a diet syringe fed to her, and did everything we needed to do to turn it around."And a little over a month later, with the great care from Project Wildlife, Blue says the cub is expected to make a full recovery. "Now she is completely stable and will most likely be going to another facility in Arizona." You might think that once animals have rehabbed, they would be let back out into the wild.. Well that's not always the case.""Because she's had so much human contact, we really can't release her back into the wild. RANDALLSTOWN, Md. -- A 5-month-old boy was sent to an intensive care unit at The John Hopkins Hospital after enduring the kind of attack that many grown adults have not.The attack on Garrison Bailey Borkoski happened just after 1 a.m. Saturday as he and his mother slept in a house on Chapman Road in Randallstown, Maryland.“That adult, at some point and time, got up and went to the bathroom and that’s when the 5-month-old was bitten by a dog in the house, a pit bull,” said Det. Robert Reason of the Baltimore County Police Department. “There were actually several pit bulls in the home at the time this occurred.”There were four pit bulls in the home, which the owner would later tell police have no cages and typically have their roam of the interior of the house.Both mother and child had only moved in a week or two earlier.“There are no charges pending right now,” said Reason. “Based on the investigation, there is no indication that anybody had any intent to cause harm to the child at all, so there are no charges pending right now.”In the aftermath of the attack, paramedics found the baby covered in blood and motionless, but still breathing.It was later determined that Garrison had suffered a large laceration to the top of his head and lacerations to his neck, as well as puncture wounds to the rest of his body, but miraculously, just fours days after the attack, doctors released him from the hospital.“Right now, fortunately, the 5-month-old is home and recovering and doing well, so we’re very, very happy about that,” said Reason.According to the Baltimore County Department of Health, the owners surrendered the four pit bulls, allowing them to be euthanized, but it was later determined only two of the dogs had actually attacked the child.The other two were returned to the owners.This story was originally published by Jeff Hager at WMAR. 1871
