BEIJING, July 22 (Xinhua) -- From anti-terrorism drills to halt of flights during the opening ceremony, Beijing is taking every possible measure to ward off terrorism and ensure security for next month's Olympic Games.     China Civil Aviation Administration announced on Tuesday a new move for Olympic security that no planes would be allowed to take off or land at Beijing Capital International Airport from 7 p.m. to midnight on Aug. 8, the night of the Games' opening ceremony. SHANGHAI, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- The world's widest tunnel with an inner diameter of 13.7 meters completed its excavation here under the Yangtze River on Friday.     The 8.9-km tunnel is part of a 12.6 billion yuan (1.84 billion U.S. dollars) bridge and tunnel project to link Shanghai with Chongming Island, the country's third largest after Taiwan and Hainan.     The tunnel will accommodate a six-lane expressway and a rail line. When operational in 2010, travel to Chongming from urban Shanghai will take 20 minutes, according to Yu Xuanping, vice general manager of the Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co., Ltd, builder of the tunnel.     The company used a tunnel boring machine with a diameter of 15.43 meters, the largest of its kind, to excavate under the Yangtze.     The tunnel and bridge project would make the transport networkson the southern and northern sides of the river more closely connected, said Wu Liangyong, a Chinese Academy of Sciences academician.     The tunnel connects Shanghai's vast Pudong District with Changxing Island in the Yangtze, while the bridge connects Changxing and Chongming.     Currently, Chongming is connected with Jiangsu Province to its north.     Located at the Yangtze River mouth, Chongming covers an area of1,200 sq. km, equal to about 20 percent of Shanghai's total land area.     China's central government plans to turn the island into a model of an eco-friendly town in the country. Shanghai municipal government is also paying great attention, with infrastructure projects being built within the island.     Experts said the inconvenient traffic between Shanghai and Chongming once blocked the development of the island. The construction of the bridge and tunnel would help attract overseas investment and make the suburb a major channel of the Yangtze River Delta area.

BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Some 53.2 million people hit the roads in China on Wednesday, the third day of the "golden week", said a Ministry of Transport (MOT) spokesman.     Although that figure was an increase of 5.1 percent year-on-year, it was 4.2 percent lower than Tuesday's 55.5 million, because most travelers began their journey in the first two days of the holiday, he said.     The "golden week" National Day holiday this year runs from Sept. 29 to Oct. 5.     The spokesman said 740,000 medium-sized and large vehicles were used to move travelers around the country on Wednesday, compared with Tuesday's 760,000 vehicles. BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- The latest tests found that Chinese liquid dairy products met the new temporary restrictions on melamine, the country's top quality control agency said on Saturday.     It was the ninth investigation on the industrial chemical following the tainted baby formula scandal that killed at least three infants and sickened more than 50,000 others, according to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ).     The latest tests covered 532 batches of liquid milk, including yogurt, from 69 brands in 23 major cities nationwide, the agency said.     At present, 4,213 batches of liquid dairy products from 131 brands produced after Sept. 14 were tested and all in line with the limit, it added.     Melamine, often used in the manufacturing of plastics, was added to sub-standard or diluted milk to make the protein levels appear higher.     China on Wednesday set temporary limits on melamine content in dairy products. The limits were a maximum of 1 mg of melamine per kg of infant formula and a maximum 2.5 mg per kg for liquid milk, milk powder and food products containing at least 15 percent milk.     The State Council, or Cabinet, issued a series of quality control regulations for dairy products on Thursday.     The regulations tighten control of how milk-yielding animals are bred, how raw milk is purchased and the production and sales of dairy food.     They promised more severe punishment for people who violated safety standards and quality control departments that failed to fulfil their duties.

XIAMEN, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- China will further open up to the world and step up its international investment cooperation, Vice Premier Wang Qishan promised here Monday.     Addressing the 12th Xiamen International Trade and Investment Fair in the east Fujian Province, Wang said the country would continue to stick to the national policy of opening up, constantly improve its policies on utilizing foreign investment and investing in foreign countries, and create more space for foreign companies to develop their business in China.     China's reform and opening up policy had significantly transformed the country in the past 30 years, and its accession to the World Trade Organization had further integrated it with the global economy, he said.     Although the country met with severe natural disasters and an unfavorable international economic environment, its coping measures made its national economy stay healthy on the whole, he said, noting it was confident in and capable of overcoming the current difficulties and challenges.     Expounding on improving its policies on utilizing foreign investment and investing in foreign countries, Wang vowed to further improve the country's investment environment including building a service-oriented government, a market of fair competition, a transparent legal environment and stable policy environment.     He also stressed lifting the quality and diversifying the means of utilizing foreign investment, and encouraging domestic enterprises to invest in foreign countries.     The Chinese government had always supported trade and investment liberalization and opposed protectionism in any form, he said, vowing to work with the world to eliminate trade and investment barriers and cope with various difficulties and challenges for global economic prosperity and stability.     Attendants of the forum are from 120 countries and regions and seven international organizations.
