SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The family of a Navy sailor nearly killed in Syria is starting the new year with one less challenge.Over a year ago Navy EOD Tech Kenton Stacy was left paralyzed after an IED explosion. As Stacy was recovering in San Diego, renters were destroying the family’s Virginia home. “Just with everything we’re going through, it added stress. I just couldn’t believe how someone could damage our home and be okay with it,” said Kenton’s wife Lindsey.The home reeked of cigarettes, and the carpet, walls, and blinds were destroyed. When the EOD community in Virginia learned what happened in November they began to make repairs on the home.Julie Fish, a real estate agent with Signature Realty Select, also stepped in to help, taking over as the realtor.After reaching out for more help, people around the country offered money, time, services and resources. “These guys are...it’s like a brotherhood, there’s nothing they wouldn’t do for one another, and I like to think the wives are the same way,” said Fish, whose husband is also a Navy EOD Tech. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Anti-Defamation League in San Diego announced a reward Thursday for information leading to the arrest of a suspect who reportedly shot at the Temple Emanu-El in Del Cerro. According to the ADL, the temple became aware that the building had been struck by bullets in “recent days.” When exactly the building was targeted is unclear. The league says the bullet holes were discovered in a portion of the building not in use. San Diego Police are also investigating the incident, but the ADL says they don’t believe there is a “known continuing threat to Temple Emanu-El or other Jewish institutions in the area.”“ADL takes any report of violence against a religious institution extremely seriously, and will always commit our utmost effort and resources to securing justice for victims,” said Tammy Gillies, ADL San Diego Regional Director. “We hope that by offering this reward, someone with critical information for investigators will be motivated to speak out.“According to the ADL, 2018 saw a 27 percent increase in anti-Semitic incidents throughout California. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Laurel Street Bridge at Balboa Park was closed late Friday after a fire started inside the bridge. At around 7:30 p.m., Park Rangers called the San Diego Fire Department after seeing smoke coming out of the side of the 105-year-old bridge. The closure caused great inconvenience for Old Globe Theater patrons trying to get to and out of Friday night's show. Season ticket holders Kenny Ard and Brian Moore barely made it to the theater, before the bridge was closed off by emergency responders. Witnesses saw firefighters carefully try to suppress the flames by opening the manholes on the road.“We kind of rushed when we saw the fire truck," Moore said. “I was like, I bet they’re going to close the bridge. So we hurried and made sure we got here.“San Diego Fire Fighters said the fire broke out inside of the hollow bridge. They have not announced the cause of the flames. However, this scene was all too familiar. Since its construction in 1914, the Laurel Street Bridge has caught fire several times. Many of the fires were started by transients who end up living inside the bridge. In 2017, several homeless people were rescued from inside a utility hole on the bridge.“There are access panels at the base and some on the sides, and so people get in there,” Moore said. October, 2003, the Cedar Fire broke out in the Cleveland National Forest and exploded across San Diego County. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Filipino community in San Diego numbers around 200,000, second only to Latinos.This election the effort to get out the vote among that group has stepped up.Jo Ann Fields is among those getting out the word. She's been manning a phone bank nearly every day for the past few weeks. "It's important for us to get out the vote so we can grab the attention of our decision-makers and get things done," Fields said.Fields is the Government and Public Relations Director for the Asian Pacific Islander Initiative. The group does many things to support and advance its community, including civic engagement."We are the second largest ethnic group after Latinos we are the largest segment among Asian Pacific Islanders," says Fields.According to the San Diego County Registrar of Voters, more than 46,000 special language ballots have been requested in Filipino this year.Fields says there are several factors she thinks will encourage people to vote in record numbers, including having a Filipino candidate on the ballot, such as Todd Gloria, who is running for San Diego mayor."This is the first time someone from our community would be the leader of a city with 1 million-plus residents so that's really exciting," Fields said.The effort to get out the vote has been impacted by COVID-19, but the outreach is all done virtually this year."Phone banking is one way, text banking is another, virtual town hall like we will have Friday," Fields recalls.That town hall is designed to answer questions about how and when to vote.
