HONOLULU, United States, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and leaders of other Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) members met in Honolulu, Hawaii, Sunday to find ways to speed up regional economic integration, free trade and investment, and economic and technological cooperation.The annual meeting, hosted by U.S. President Barack Obama in his home state, is being convened at the JW Marriott Ihilani, Honolulu, to boost regional economic integration, trade, green growth, job creation in green industries, energy security, and regulatory cooperation.President Hu is expected to speak at the meeting. He will introduce China's stand on the topics and call for "improving global economic governance, shifting the growth methods, promoting economic globalization and regional economic integration," according to Chinese diplomats.Hu will join other APEC leaders in meeting with the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC), which presents recommendations to APEC leaders in an annual dialogue and advises APEC officials on business sector priorities and concerns.During this year's dialogue, APEC leaders are expected to discuss regional economic integrity, the development of small- and medium-sized enterprises, food security and other issues with ABAC representatives.This year's APEC meeting convenes at a time when the global economic recovery is fraught with instability and uncertainty, and encounters growing risks and challenges.Some major economies are experiencing an economic slowdown, while in the eurozone, sovereign debt risks are rising in some countries. High inflationary pressure is a problem in emerging economies, including some in the Asia-Pacific region. Protectionism in various forms is mounting.In face of the challenges, the APEC leaders will look for effective measures to stimulate the global economy, regional economic integration, free trade and investment, and economic and technological cooperation.China hopes the APEC members will implement the economic growth strategy agreed on last year, striving to achieve a balanced, inclusive, sustainable, innovative and safe economic growth, said Wu Hailong, assistant foreign minister of China, at a press briefing last week.He said that China expects the APEC members to comprehensively promote regional trade and investment liberalization, adding that all members should fulfill their commitments and oppose all forms of trade protectionism.APEC should strengthen economic and technical cooperation to enhance the ability of the developing members to develop further, and therefore to achieve common prosperity, said the senior diplomat."APEC members generally hold positive attitudes toward U.S. proposals in various fields such as green growth, innovation policy. BEIJING, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- In response to public suspicion stoked by recent dumpling contamination scandals, China's Ministry of Health on Thursday said the new food safety standard for flash-frozen dumplings did not show signs of leniency.The Ministry introduced the new food safety standard on flash-frozen dough or rice products on Thursday.The Ministry has been accused of loosening scrutiny over a disease-generating bacteria in such foods, staphylococcus aureus, or golden staph, which can cause various diseases, including pneumonia and sepsis, and is sometimes life-threatening.The controversy became particularly relevant after several major brands of frozen dumplings have been successively recalled in recent months.In October, a Henan-based company, Zhengzhou Sinian Food Co., Ltd, confirmed the contamination of golden staph in its flash-frozen seafood- and pork-stuffed dumplings.Frozen dumplings made by Hong Kong-based manufacturer Wanchai Ferry were found to contain golden staph in November, and some of its products have been pulled from shelves.The previous standard provided that no golden staph should be tested in such food, while the new one gives a quantitative restriction that the volume of the bacteria should be no more than ten to the fourth degree.Liu Xiumei, a food safety expert with the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said at the press conference held by the health ministry that such bacteria becomes inactivate after the food is boiled for a few seconds, and it takes a volume of ten to the fifth degree to generate toxicity.The previous standard could only serve as a general provision due to the lack of quantitative microbiological testing back when it was introduced, Liu said, stressing that the new standard is not a sign that the Ministry has gone soft on bacterial contamination of relevant foods.The new standard will come into effect starting Dec. 21, 2011.

BEIJING, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- China's land supply went up 37 percent year-on-year in 2011 amid the government's tightening measure on commercial property market, according to the Ministry of Land and Resources (MLR) on Saturday. Most of the land supply last year went to the country's 10 million government-subsidized affordable housing units that began construction in 2011, according to MLR.In the meantime, land supply for commercial residential housing totaled about 96,700 hectares last year, up only 4 percent from previous year.Planned land supply quota for construction last year were up 16.25 percent year-on-year from 180,000 hectares in 2010.

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's progress in meeting a development goal on children's health can serve as an inspiration to other countries working towards the same objective, Dr. Renee Van de Weerdt, chief of maternal, newborn and child health at the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) told Xinhua in an interview Friday.Van de Weerdt said that "the example of China is very encouraging because it means it can be done, even in a very big country with a very big population."China is on track to meet the fourth Millennium Development Goal (MDG), one of the eight development targets that the international community has pledged to meet by 2015. MDG 4 requires that each country reduce its rate of mortality for children under age five to two-thirds of what it was in 1990.According to Van de Weerdt, most deaths of children under five take place in the first month of life. After the first month, the most prevalent causes of death are pneumonia and diarrhea.ACHIEVING THE GOAL WORLDWIDEThe international community has been doing "relatively well" in working towards achieving MDG 4, Van de Weerdt said.The UN Interagency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (IGME) stated in their 2011 Report on Levels and Trends in Child Mortality that the number of under-five deaths worldwide has dropped from more than 12 million in 1990 to 7.6 million in 2010."We really continue to see progress," Van de Weerdt said. "The number of children that die every year continues to drop so we are really pleased to see that progress. Unfortunately, the progress isn't sufficient to really be able to say that if we continue at this pace we would achieve MDG 4 by 2015."Some regions, according to Van de Weerdt, like Latin America and parts of Asia are making more headway towards the goal than others that are currently lagging behind.

BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- China's State Councilon Thursday called ordered improved, innovative administration in environmental protection, according to a statement.In a statement published on the central government's website, the State Council listed a series of guidelines on environment-related issues, saying that it will step efforts to address prominent environmental problems that affect people's lives and sustainable development.The statement ordered strictly implementing environmental impact assessment, vigoroulsy developing environmental protection industry, and ensuring nuclear and radioactive safety.It called for implementing economic policies beneficial to environmental protection.The statement also ordered local governments at all levels to attach more importance to environmental protection, noting ecological conditions should be considered in evaluating the performance of local leaders.
