SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Whether its the search for something warm or just a turn to the comforts of home, this past winter gave San Diegans more pause for certain cuisines.Food ordering platform Grubhub looked at food delivery trends from Dec. 22, 2018, to March 13, 2019, to analyze San Diego's winter food trends by users compared to the rest of the year.Leading the pack were bean burritos saw a 362 percent increase in popularity during that time span, more than 100 percent more than the next most popular dish, according to Grubhub.RELATED: Inventive eggs Benedict, dumpling soup highlight San Diego's foodie scene on Yelp listGyro wraps experienced a 258 percent increase in orders, while vegetable ramen orders shot up 222 percent. Chicken wraps (165 percent increase) and chow mein (157 percent increase) rounded out the top five menu items.The "science" could correspond with winter's below average temperatures — and perhaps the heavy rains. Many of the most popular items ordered were soups.Heading into spring, the app went further and looked at orders over the spring 2017 and 2018 to predict what San Diegans would likely order. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Unions were the big winners as the San Diego Airport Authority decided to require contractors to enter into a project labor agreement in a 5-3 vote. PLA’s entail that unions will not strike and the airport will in turn run all the work through labor unions. Opposition to the PLA says they are worried the project will be even more costly to accommodate union dues and that non-union local workers will be excluded from the job. “It’s completely unfair,” said Steve Stroder, who represents” [they] are being told they can’t work on a project in San Diego.” Unions say their track record of completing marquee jobs on time like the county courthouse and under budget speaks for itself. “I mean we’ve proven that we can do this work,” said Keith Maddox of the San Diego Imperial Counties Labor Council, ”our workers are local.” The vote will be made after several hours of public testimony. 916

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — UC San Diego was granted a temporary use permit by the city council in National City to use El Toyon Park to conduct a clinical vaccination trial.The permit is good from Sept. 16 to Oct. 31, 2022, with a rental rate of ,000 per month.A spokesperson for UCSD Health said the site would be for the Janssen clinical trial, which is still awaiting final approval locally; more details could not be confirmed Friday.The vaccination clinic would be set up in a parking lot at the park in National City, one of the communities heavily impacted by COVID-19.Community advocates have been working with UCSD to inform potential participants in the South Bay about vaccine trials.“The Chicano Federation has been working with a lot of our underserved communities, but also some of the hardest-hit communities by COVID-19, particularly the Latino communities,” said Roberto Alcantar, Chief Strategy Officer for the Chicano Federation. “One of the hot topics to come out of this is the issue with vaccinations.”Alcantar said concerns were raised over a different trial that was set to begin in the South Bay earlier this month; it was later put on hold. But UCSD quickly worked with the federation to ensure residents in the trial areas would get the information needed to make informed decisions if they wanted to participate.“We’re happy to see that UCSD is taking the lead in National City, and it’s not some other group because we know that they’re doing the best that they can to provide the right information,” he said. “If there are trials that are happening out there that are unethical or targeting people of color with incentives, we’ll call them out.”UCSD researchers previously said they hoped to focus on recruiting people for the trials from underserved communities with the highest rate of COVID-19.The San Diego Latino Health Coalition, which includes the Chicano Federation and several other nonprofit organizations, will continue community outreach efforts before the trial officially begins.“We’re very effective at getting the information out, and people are receptive to us because they trust us, they know us, we’ve been working with them for decades,” said Alcantar.There’s no word on when the trial will start, but soon there may be three clinical trials running simultaneously with two focused primarily on the South Bay. 2361

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A new effort is underway to revive a San Diego public golf course that's falling apart.  The "Friends of Presidio Hills Golf" went before the city council Tuesday urging them to take up the issue.  Their plan is to restore the course to its former glory days.Presidio Hills in Old Town is a local golf course with a storied past and an uncertain future."It needs to be completely redone," said John Vallas, who spearheaded the proposal.The place many once called the "cradle of golf" in San Diego is now a long shot from being up to par. 578
