SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A University City man is hoping to warn others after someone with a BB gun shot him during his daily jog.On Tuesday, 70-year-old Taurone was nearing the end of his daily three-mile jog northbound on University Town Center Drive just after 6 p.m."Very calm, enjoying the evening. Hardly any traffic out in the neighborhood," said Taurone. On the sidewalk near the Renaissance Towne Center, his calm jog was suddenly interrupted by pain."Jogging along and felt a sharp sting in the lower portion or my chin, so I stopped. It felt like an extremely large pimple. I was pushing on it, and something round and hard came out of my skin fell onto the ground," said Taurone.A stunned Taurone, who didn't have his glasses, didn't look for the apparent BB pellet."When I realized I what it was, and that I had been shot, I was very angry," said Taurone.Taurone, who was shot on the right side of his face, believes the shot came from the shopping center area. He briefly scoured the area but didn't see anyone. Bleeding from his chin, he jogged home. He's doing fine now, but he's still upset."If the shot had been 6 to 8 inches higher, it would have hit me in the eye," said Taurone.Taurone has no clue about a motive, but he knows he was the intended target."Makes sense because I was the only moving target in the area," said Taurone.Taurone has been interviewed by police, who told him they haven't received reports of similar incidents in the area. He's now worried about what may happen next, because of the boldness of the attack. It was still light out, and while the traffic was light at the time, it remains a busy area."If not caught, he or she could do it to other people and cause more even harm," said Taurone.Anyone with information on the case is asked to call San Diego Police at 619-531-2000. 1826

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A task force assembled by Governor Gavin Newsom wants to impose a statewide mandate requiring local governments to address homelessness, and hold jurisdictions that fail to make measurable progress accountable with lawsuits. The proposal by the 13-member Council of Regional Homeless Advisors would require an amendment to California’s constitution. If approved by voters, California would become the first state with such a mandate.“A legally-enforceable obligation will sharpen focus. It will enhance a bias towards action and it will elevate this on the list of priorities,” said San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher, a member of the task force.Although the specifics are still under negotiation, the task force outlined an example scenario where cities and counties would have one year to reduce their homeless populations by “tens of thousands.”“These plans would include specific benchmarks and timelines that jurisdictions would have to meet for moving people into permanent housing through both services offered in interim interventions and creation of housing opportunities,” the Council said in its proposal letter.“It won’t be enough to buy your way through with putting up a number of shelters to make the public think you’re taking action,” Fletcher said. “You will actually have to find a way to tackle the underlying problems.”Supporters likened the proposal to California’s renewable energy mandate. It’s still unclear how much the housing mandate would cost.“I would not be supportive of the state coming down on cities like San Diego and saying you have to change the way you do business, change the way you operate, and not give us any money to do that,” said San Diego City Councilman Chris Cate. Cate said he would prefer to address homelessness with a system of incentives rather than mandates and punishments, but said he was reserving judgment on the plan until more details are released. The Council of Regional Homeless Advisors wants to put the issue before voters on the November ballot. To do that, the California Legislature would need to vote by June 25 to send the topic to the ballot. 2150

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A teen in San Diego has written a children's book, which she hopes can help in the fight against cancer.Sophia Namazy, 14, wrote "Pigtails, Ponytails, and Fairytales" after seeing her little sister wake up every morning with messy hair. In the book, a pair of fairies come at night and play with it. Sophia says it's loosely based on her sister, Poppy."Her hair was really crazy and frizzy in the morning," says Sophia. "So every morning it would be like that, and I would sketch about it. And I thought I might as well make it into a book."Now that it's published, she's decided to donate all the money from sales to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.Namazy picked that location because it's where her twin brother, Max, goes every year for treatment.Max has a rare blood disorder called Schwachman-Diamond syndrome. His body doesn't produce enough white blood cells."I want other kids to know they're not alone, and they're not going through this alone," Sophia says."I'm really proud of Sophia, writing a book," says Max. "It just makes me happy that she's writing a book for me, to me, and helping support the cancer institute."Their mother, Jennifer Namazy, says the book has helped the family support each other."It's very emotional, but it really helps us all think about how a medical disorder in a family can affect everybody," she says. "We're taking what could be negative and making it a positive and helping other kids. That is really the most important message."The book is available on Amazon. 1545

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A surveillance system caught a man breaking into a College Area Thai Restaurant and stealing hundreds of dollars in cash and tech equipment. 10News met with Chira Svangvitaya, owner of "Sala Thai." She has been serving dishes from her homeland to the San Diego community for almost 30 years. But when she opened the store on Halloween morning, she found her store in shambles. “I saw all the things all over the floor," Svangvitaya said. MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodHer surveillance cameras captured the break-in just before 7 a.m.  A man crept in through the back door, ran through the dining area while pulling up his hood, then headed straight to the front counter. He took 0 in cash, five tablets, and a laptop before tiptoeing out the back door. "He was like a pro," she said. “In and out in less than five minutes.”While the stolen money was substantial, the absence of the tablets hurt her most.“I have Uber Eats. Grub Hub, Postmates, Door Dash, Amazon, and Yelp," she said. She said 30 percent of her sales come solely from deliveries, which means she is losing out on a lot of customers. But she said there is a silver lining to this. What the thief may not know, is that the tablets' only function is food delivery. The resale value is unsubstantial. They all come with serial numbers, which she hopes the police and delivery companies use to track them and the thief down. “I just want them [the police] to catch the guy. I don’t want him to do it to other business, you know? It’s painful," Svangvitaya said.If you recognize the man, call San Diego Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 1690
