San Diego (KGTV)- While millions are bracing for Hurricane Dorian, San Diegans are preparing to take part in relief efforts. Volunteers and first responders are making their way to the impacted areas. A handful of American Red Cross volunteers left Monday. Twelve others are already getting their assignments in Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas. “This is a major response for us,” says Sean Mahoney, Regional CEO for the American Red Cross. “We sent 99 semi-trucks full of sheltering equipment, cots, blankets, and everything needed for folks when they’re put out of their homes.”Mahoney also left Monday heading to the Carolinas. In total, 16 volunteers from the San Diego area are assigned to help with relief efforts, but more are ready to go if needed. “We have 22-hundred volunteers in the San Diego and Imperial counties region. They’re all checking their status, just making sure that they have the qualifications needed.”Volunteers would assist with mass care, feeding, and shelter. The San Diego Urban Search and Rescue team spent the morning loading up supplies. After a morning conference call with FEMA, David Gerboth says the team could be called to the east coast. “They are looking at mobilizing additional search and rescue teams now from the west coast,” says Gerboth. “So we’re configuring our cache to be able to mobilize at a moments notice.”The team is prepared to spend at least a week on the east coast, assisting victims with search and rescue, collapsed structures, and more. The San Diego Urban Search and Rescue team has already sent five members to assist with logistics. Those helping with storm relief would typically drive to the impacted areas. But this time around, if they are called out, first responders will fly to get there by the time the storm makes landfall. “We know when we go and help our friends on the east coast, they’re also ready to come in case we need it on the west coast.” 1936

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A ring-tailed lemur that was stolen from the San Francisco Zoo this week has been found.The 21-year-old male lemur named Maki was discovered missing shortly before the zoo opened to visitors on Wednesday. Investigators found evidence of a forced entry to the lemur enclosure.Someone called police Thursday evening to say that Maki was spotted in Daly City, a few miles south of the zoo.Police say the animal was found in the playground area of a church.Maki was found to be in good health and was transported back to the zoo.Detectives are still investigating the break-in.?? SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Business owners across San Diego County were bracing for the possibility of shifting back into the most restrictive purple tier Tuesday.The county barely avoided the move and can stay in the red tier for now.“The up and down is very difficult to run any business without having any known information about what the future brings,” said Scott Lutwak, CEO of Fit Athletic Club, which has five locations in the county. “It’s been just a rollercoaster of open and close again.”If the county had to move back into the purple tier, gyms and fitness centers would have to go back to outdoor operations only.“It’s not easy to just move all the equipment that you had inside and move it into your parking lot and create a gym,” he said.Under the red tier, they can operate inside at 10 percent capacity. Lutwak said that’s still just not enough.“This number has been a very difficult number for our industry to digest because we simply cannot operate at 10 percent of our capacity.”Restaurants were also set to move back outside if we hit the purple tier. Under the red, they can offer indoor dining at 25 percent capacity.“There’s no clear path to 100 percent, there’s no plan to get us back open, and that’s really shocking to us,” said Angie Weber, co-owner of Cowboy Star Restaurant and Butcher Shop.She said her East Village business would not survive another shutdown.Weber said California’s color-coded tier system makes things more difficult for already struggling business owners, as they’re constantly worrying about what could happen next.“We need to fix this, we’re just going to be on this seesaw,” she said.While San Diego County teeters between the red and purple tiers with no orange or yellow in sight yet, both Lutwak and Weber hope county leaders and health officials can take back local control.“If we use the governor’s formula, our businesses are basically never going to be able to reopen,” said Lutwak. 1943

(KGTV) - A new website from the City of San Diego's Planning Department is asking residents to help re-imagine the Clairemont neighborhood.Clairemontplan.org is like an online public meeting, where people can look at different ideas for adding housing and retail to the neighborhood and weigh in on which ones they like the most."We understand not everyone can make an in-person meeting at the time we schedule it for or attend a city council hearing in the middle of the day," says City Planning Director Mike Hansen.As MTS builds a new trolley line through Clairemont along the I-5, the area is coming up with a new community plan. The city wants to add housing and retail to the area to help meet new goals for housing, transportation and climate change.To do that, they're looking to add density to the neighborhood.The website identifies eight areas of Clairemont that could be redeveloped. It asks users to make changes to at least three areas while adding 5,000 new homes. At least 40% of the houses need to be near the trolley.To help, it offers basic renderings of what different development could look like in each neighborhood."We wanted to try to find something that allowed people to get into the weeds if they wanted to," says Tait Galloway, the Program Manager who helped design the website. "But, this still allows them to do it within 15-20 minutes."The website will be available until March 14th. After that, the answers will be collected and used as the city devises the new Clairemont Community Plan. They hope to present it by the end of 2020.City leaders hope this will become a template for other neighborhoods and a way to get more people involved in the process.
