SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — County law enforcement officials say overdose deaths from fentanyl have sharply increased since last year.The San Diego County District Attorney Office said in the first six months of 2020, there have been 203 fentanyl-related deaths: 119 have been confirmed and 84 are pending confirmation. The victims range in age from 17 to 66 years old.In all of 2019, there were 152 fentanyl-related overdose deaths in the county."This alarming uptick demonstrates that dealers continue cutting various illegal drugs with fentanyl and now more than ever it’s a recipe for death," said District Attorney Summer Stephan. His roommates found him dead in the morning from a fentanyl overdose.In May, a 19-year-old purchased two Percocets from a friend. He consumed both pills and subsequently died from an overdose. He had fentanyl in his system at the time of his deathFentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine and up to 50 times more potent than heroin, according to officials. Even in doses as little as two milligrams, the drug is lethal for most people. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the election nears, millions of people will be glued to smartphones and computer screens, scrolling through social media for instant information.But platforms like Twitter and Facebook may not be the best sources for information."The way the algorithms work, they promote stuff that gets a lot of reaction or a lot of engagement," says University of San Diego Assistant Professor Colin Campbell. "The systems are designed to try to show you stuff that they think is going to actually make you excited or make you react in some way. And as a result, that tends to be the more polarizing stuff."But both sites have taken steps in 2020 to safeguard against misinformation.In a lengthy blog post about their election protocols, Twitter called their role in the election "critical," saying that people should "use Twitter respectfully and to recognize our collective responsibility to the electorate to guarantee a safe, fair, and legitimate democratic process."They adjusted their "Civic Integrity Policy" so that only verified and official accounts can tweet about election results. They also issued 150 million warnings for content that was flagged as misleading by independent fact-checkers.Campbell says both platforms are a lot more reliable now than they were in 2016, but could still have done more. He believes it's because they didn't want to face criticism over censorship."From a pragmatic perspective, they probably don't want to get involved in the challenges of trying to go through and censor or decide what kind of stuff they want to have on the site," says Campbell.Even with all the changes, he says users still need to scroll with skepticism and filter the content they chose to engage with."I think it's very important that we're all vigilant," he says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Chronic pain, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and anxiety are just some of the conditions veterans carry with them long after serving our country.Now many are finding relief at a free acupuncture clinic offered at the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine (PCOM)."I had patients who would come to me and say, no you don't understand, I got off all my pain medication," said Christine Cronin, a full-time faculty member at PCOM.A Marine Corps veteran herself, Cronin started the Veterans Clinic in 2013."I focused my doctoral research on the treatment of combat stress-induced insomnia, and I had a lot of research that supported that we were going to have a lot of service members who were going to have a series of comorbid conditions, they were going to have a lot of different things that they were going to be working through. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Before Vice President Mike Pence made his way to Coronado, he spent the morning at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel.The Vice President and Second lady stayed there during their San Diego Visit. A few protestors inflated the now well-known "Baby Trump" outside of the hotel; It's possible the Vice President got a look at the giant balloon. "We're hoping that the Vice President sees this and sees that there is resistance here in San Diego," says protestor Will Johnson. The giant balloon was an attention grabber for many who saw it on Park Boulevard. "I knew he was coming to town, but I didn't know he was staying here," says Kate Permenter. Permenter is in town for a convention and staying at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel, saying, "So last night people kind of started freaking out."Outside of the hotel, security checked every car making its way into the garage. Hotel guests say there are dozens of police officers and secret service agents inside of the hotel. "At every entrance, there are cops just kind of staring at you."Dozens of officers escorted the motorcade as the Vice President left downtown this morning.
