SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Law enforcement agencies in San Diego County have a new tool in the fight against child predators: Southern California’s first electronics-sniffing dog. Willow, a 2-year-old yellow Labrador, is trained to sniff out the chemical used to coat all kinds of electronic storage media, including microSD cards, thumb drives, hard drives, cell phones and tablets.She works in partnership with the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC), the San Diego Police Department and the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office.“Our whole goal with ICAC is to save kids,” said Willow’s handler Ron Burleson. “If they’ve got any homemade images, there’s a kid out there that needs to be rescued, needs to be found. The breakthrough came after Connecticut State Police chemist Dr. Jack Hubball discovered that all media with a circuit board -- like hard drives, thumb drives and SD cards -- is covered with a chemical to prevent overheating called triphenylphosphine oxide (TPPO). Once trained, dogs will sniff out the chemical for a reward. In Willow’s case, she gets three cups of food a day, and only after she sniffs out a device.“Two or three times a day, I’m hiding storage media and then we’re training, we’re working,” said Burleson. “That’s how she gets fed.”RELATED: 10news viewer helps burglary victim reunite with stolen puppyWillow spent four months training with Todd Jordan, whose first electronics detection dog, Bear, made a key discovery in the child sex crimes case against former Subway spokesman Jared Fogle.Willow has been on the job in San Diego County since November and took part in her first local search a few weeks ago at the home of a registered sex offender.“And we searched the house and she was able to find a cell phone that had been missed previously during the search,” Burleson said.Although Willow has a narrow specialty, Burleson said she’ll be busy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Less than a week before the election, there are reports of political yard signs being stolen and vandalized, and in some cases, appearing in yards.Sunday night, just before midnight in a cul-de-sac in El Cajon, surveillance video shows a car driving slowly before it stops to let someone out."A shadowy figure, looks young, maybe 10 years old, gets out of the vehicle, runs in, and grabs a political sign," said Brandon Spaulding.Spaulding says the sign being taken belonged to his neighbor and it read "Trump/Pence, Make America Great Again." That same night, Spaulding's sign, which had been vandalized days before, also disappeared.The apparent thieves in the Sunday's thefts: a child and an adult."Very disappointed and frustrated ... being a terrible role model. As parents, you’re supposed to teach children the different between right and wrong. I was always taught to love my country, and part of that is freedom of speech. Respect people's rights to say what they want to say," said Spaulding.Spaulding isn't alone. I’m excited that I’m alive to see this happen,” said Ellen Nash, the chair of the San Diego chapter of the Black American Political Association of California.“All along that was the right choice,” Nash told ABC 10News. “I’m honored that she’s there to represent Black women and the Black vote. For Joe Biden to honor us by selecting her as his VP is the greatest historic moment.”Many Black voters wrote to Biden, urging him to choose Harris.Nash said having Harris as the first Black and Asian American woman to appear on a major party’s presidential ticket gives women of color a voice.“It was just a moment of relaxation and celebration,” said Nash. “She is prepared, skilled, and credentialed.”But does this choice possible boost Biden’s chances of winning this election? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Many Asian American business owners continue to struggle during the pandemic, but a North County teen is hoping to help by creating a website to support local restaurants."I was hearing a lot of stories about Asians in my community experiencing discrimination during the pandemic," said 17-year-old Kaia Culotta.The teen said coming from a family of small business owners, she wanted to do something to help."I realized that there wasn't an easily accessible, comprehensible list of Asian owned businesses in my community," said Culotta. "So, I saw a need for that."For weeks, Culotta learned how to code through free programs online to build a website. The "Help Asian Owned Businesses" site has an extensive list of restaurants located around the county.Culotta said her project sparked the interest of San Diego City Councilmember Chris Cate. He even shared a video promoting the site on social media."It is awesome. It's such a neat thing to be doing out of the goodness of her heart," said Joe Kao, owner of R3fresh Juice Bar.After seeing Cate's video, the small business owner reached out to the teen to thank her for putting the site together.Kao said his business, like many others, had fewer customers during the pandemic. "We definitely saw a drop in business, but we've stayed open," he said.Kao applauds Culotta's work and thanks her for thinking of the county's small Asian business owners. 1430
