ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - The North County finally has its own comedy club. The Grand Comedy Club opened on Grand Avenue in Escondido late in 2019 and reports growing crowds over its first 10 weeks. "I think people need a good laugh, nowadays. It's really great to see people leaving here happy and telling their friends, and their friends refer their friends. It's great to bring something back to my hometown that the locals really dig and have fun at," said owner Adam Wasserman.Wasserman is a property manager who has performed as a part-time stand up comedian for 11 years. He began thinking of starting his own club, and wanted it to be in Escondido. "You had to go downtown or La Jolla to go to shows. It's a long way to go and and parking and everything. I always thought 'Why was there never a club here in North County?'" Wasserman said.The headliners are typically brought in from Los Angeles, while many of the supporting acts are comedians from San Diego. Wasserman says they're seeing ticket sales from across North County. "We have several nice restaurants, but after you have dinner, that's it. There's nowhere to go," said Escondido resident Jacqueline Lawhorn. "At least now you can come here and enjoy a night of comedy."The opening of the Grand Comedy Club is just the latest step in Escondido's attempt to revitalize its downtown area and make it into more of destination spot. The hope is to give locals an option to spend their money closer to home, and to draw people from neighboring cities into Escondido businesses."You'd have to go to La Jolla or Orange County or whatever," said attendee Gary Arant, who has already gone to several shows at the club. (KGTV) - A private elementary school in the North County is hoping an extensive safety plan could help secure a waiver to reopen the school in mid-August.When Governor Newsom issued his order stopping in-person schooling for counties on the watch list, plans to reopen came to a sudden halt. Amanda Johnston is principal at St. Mary's School in Escondido, a Catholic K-8 school. School officials started developing the plan in April. It includes limiting enrollment, which now stands at about 170 students. That will allow the school to social distance in each classroom."We can fit 18 to 22 students depending on the room, and each student has at least six feet of space in all directions," said Johnston.Within the room, each desk will contain plexiglass desk shields."24 inches tall and three sides. No matter which direction they're looking, they are protected," said Johnston.Other protective measures include deep cleanings at the end of each day, sanitizing surfaces throughout the day and hand washing stations.Teachers will wear face shields. Masks are mandatory for students in the third grade and higher. Masks will be strongly encouraged for younger children.Teachers will rotate in, while students most stay put, except for breaks and outdoor lessons."We're really appreciative of the fact there is going to be a potential waiver to reopen," said Johnston.Johnston is hoping the school's plans will help them secure an exemption. The state has said public school districts and private schools can seek a waiver from county health officers to reopen elementary schools."We definitely plan to take all the necessary steps once we understand all the criteria and the process," said Johnston.As the school awaits that guidance, the work continues. (KGTV) — San Diego Sheriff's deputies were investigating a deadly shooting in Fallbrook on Saturday.SDSO homicide detectives were called to the 700 block of Convertible Lane just after 12 p.m. for reports of gunshots by neighbors.Deputies arrived to find an adult male suffering from gunshot wounds. "Can't stop thinking about him and about that day," said Marc Engelhardt.Engelhardt calls the last week all-consuming and painful, since the moment he doubled back during a six-hour bike ride to see what was keeping his friends - only to discover the horrific aftermath. His friend Kevin Lentz, 36, a husband and new father, was struck and killed on an Escondido street, hit head-on by a dark sedan which promptly took off."Disbelief, surreal," said Engelhardt.RELATED: Friends mourn bicyclist killed in hit-and-run crashPolice say they discovered the heavily damaged car about a half mile away. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- One person was sent to the hospital Friday night after an RV fire in Escondido.The fire broke out just before 11 p.m. in an Albertsons parking lot on East Valley Parkway.
