SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Residents of several inland North County communities tell 10News they are fed up with the numerous delays which have led to a series of road improvement projects to take more than two years to complete.The most impactful is the widening of Rancho Bernardo Road between I-15 and Bernardo Center Drive.Work on that stretch began in February of 2017 and was projected to take six to seven months. It's almost a year past that point. Residents say rush hour traffic in the area is traffic, and say that the narrower lanes caused by the road work are a safety hazard.RELATED: Couple warns of loose temporary road markers along Highway 79One woman said she almost hit a person, another said she witnessed an accident, and a man says his car clipped temporary fencing along the project twice.The project is being managed by a private developer who agreed to do the road work as part of the approval for their new housing project five miles away in Black Mountain Ranch.10News confirmed with the City of San Diego and the office of Councilmember Mark Kersey that the developer has missed multiple deadlines. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego leaders are asking the state to provide guidance on how the city can reopen the convention center safely during the pandemic.Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Councilmember Chris Cate signed on to the letter requesting that Gov. Gavin Newsom provide rules to reopen the convention center, which has been shuttered since March.According to the city, because of the coronavirus pandemic, the convention center has lost out on more than 100 events between March and December of this year. That factors out to a loss of about 7.8 million in direct attendee spending and .2 billion regional impact.Cate says guidelines to safely reopen convention centers have been awaiting Newsom's approval since June, and must be approved by November in order to host events in 2021 — many events that are already in jeopardy."We are respectfully requesting that the Governor approves the Safe Reopening Guidelines for convention centers statewide. These guidelines were submitted to his office in June. When conventions can reopen is just as critical as how they will be allowed to resume, and the state should be proactive in approving these guidelines well in advance. The world’s fifth-largest economy cannot turn on a dime and this guidance has been thoughtfully developed with an emphasis on public health and safety by leaders in the industry," Cate said in a statement.(See the letter here.)Last fiscal year, the convention center hosted 143 events that generated 5.3 million in direct attendee spending, million in hotel and sales tax revenue, and .3 billion in regional impact.Leaders say the city relies on tax revenue generated by conventions and visitors who stay in the region.Though during the pandemic, the convention center has become a different necessity. The property was transformed into a temporary shelter for the city's homeless population. Since April 1, about 1,100 individuals experiencing homelessness have been sheltered at the center per day. The city says that through its Operation Shelter to Home program, it has helped 525 people find housing to transfer into support housing, longer-term housing, rentals, living with friends or family, or rapid rehousing.Recently, the city also purchased two hotels — a Residence Inn on Hotel Circle and a Residence Inn in Kearny Mesa — to transform into housing units with supportive services as another method to bring individuals off the street. 2442
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County will expand enforcement efforts to track down businesses knowingly operating in violation of the current public health order.After a bit of a lengthy back and forth, the board of supervisors voted unanimously to expand the current enforcement team.Currently, the county’s newly developed Safe Reopening Compliance Team focuses on egregious cases, outbreaks, and complaints.There are only ten staff members presently on the team, 13 more will be added on during phase one to continue looking into egregious cases and outbreak investigations.A Healthy Compliance Call Center also went live, where members of the public can report violations of the public health order by calling (858) 694- 2900.Tuesday’s vote to include a phase two will add 22 staff members at .8 million to follow up with businesses or entities that are still operating in violation of the public health order.The funding will come from the CARES Act.Two other enforcement options were on the table for supervisors consider, but they were voted down by the majority.Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county’s public health officer, has already sent several letters ordering businesses to close down until they comply with the order.A handful of gyms and churches in the county have stayed open inside despite being ordered to close or move their operations outdoors.This week the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office filed five misdemeanor charges against a Ramona gym owner for failing to comply. 1505

The report, conducted by the National Low Income Housing Coalition, named the San Diego-Carlsbad metro the fifth most expensive area for housing in the state. The report found that San Diegans need to make more than an hour to be able to afford a two-bedroom apartment at a fair market value of ,068. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Renters in the city of San Diego will have one final day to apply for emergency financial assistance.The deadline to apply for the city’s one-time program, which provides up to ,000 per household, is Friday, Aug. 7.Families with past due or upcoming rent payments are eligible, and payments for those who are selected are expected to be distributed in the next few weeks.Each household has to provide documentation to prove they are not currently receiving any rental subsidies.
