SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Gov. Gavin Newsom declared an emergency Tuesday over wildfires burning throughout California as the state's power grid operator pleaded for continued conservation to avoid rolling blackouts. The grid operator praised residents and businesses for astonishing conservation efforts that kept the power on Monday night. The state is in a days-long heatwave that has stressed the electrical system and resulted in rolling blackouts over two nights last weekend. Outages, excessive heat, wildfire and the pandemic have people on edge. Evacuations were in effect or growing in several Northern California communities because of growing fires. Newsom demanded an investigation into two smaller weekend blackouts. 733

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Two San Diego families were devastated when their dogs disappeared. After days of searching, they found out their dogs were adopted by other families at local shelters. “I would give anything to have him back,” says Valeria Mega?a. The Spring Valley family’s poodle mix, Cookie, has been missing since Halloween. “It’s been really hard. Life is not the same without him.”After searching day and night, the family got word Cookie was placed at the El Cajon Animal Shelter. When Mega?a checked, she was told Cookie had already been adopted. A similar situation happened to a family in City Heights. Nora Avila says she was out of town when her dog Mocha, who was staying with a neighbor, got out. By the time she made it to the San Diego Humane Society, he had already been adopted. “We pleaded with them to let the family know… that we loved him. He was never abandoned,” says Avila. The El Cajon Animal Shelter and the San Diego Humane Society have holding periods of four days for animals with no identification. Cookie and Mocha were not microchipped. “One in three pets in their lifetime is missing at some point. That’s why for us again, it is so important that people microchip their pets,” says Jennifer Brehler, with the San Diego Humane Society. Both shelters told 10News they notified the adopters but the new families have decided to not return the animals. The dogs’ original families are hoping they will have a change of heart. If you are the adopted owners of Cookie or Mocha and would like to return the animals, we can put you in contact with the families. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Many Americans say cell phone are their lifelines. But what happens when yours breaks? Whether for convenience or for price, third-party repair shops are the choice for many customers. Unfortunately, some Apple users with the latest phones say they're not able to go to third-party shops. Four years ago, Christopher McQueen said he found the perfect niche business. “People are always breaking their phones, late at night,” McQueen said.He is the owner of Mobile Cell Doctors. Any brand, any phone, any version. He will come to you and fix your phone.“To be able to fix your phone in 10 minutes, versus a 3-hour fiasco at Apple, it was a need that was definitely there,” McQueen said. He said he can fix any hardware problems, except on the most recent iPhone models - iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X.Just recently, iPhone 8 user Lucas Peckham went to McQueen to get his broken screen replaced. His choices were 0 with McQueen or 9 at the Apple Store. He chose the cheaper, more convenient option.Peckham said everything was flawless until one morning, he woke up to a phone with a frozen screen. He could not swipe, touch, type, or do anything with his device. Peckham said it happened after his phone automatically updated overnight, installing the Apple 11.3 Software.McQueen said he was suddenly inundated with calls from all of his previous iPhone 8 customers. “It’s been a nightmare,” McQueen said. He said he had fixed about 100 iPhone 8’s in the last six months. He suggested to his customers, to do what they hoped to avoid by going to him in the first place - go to the Apple Store. But Peckham said, when he showed Apple the problem, he was told, because he previously used a third-party repairman, they could not repair it. Instead, he had to replace it with a brand new screen for 0 - or buy a whole new phone. “I totally felt screwed,” Peckham said. With no other option, Peckham said he gave in, spending six hours at the Apple Store, and paying up the 0. “It was basically a way for Apple to create kind of a monopoly on the iPhone screen,” Peckham said. Last month, California became the 18th state to introduce a “Right to Repair” Bill, which would require electronics manufacturers to make repair information and parts available to owners and third-party repair shops.McQueen hopes this legislation passes, so mom-and-pop business owners like him also get to have a piece of the pie. “I would love to fix those,” McQueen said. “But until they release the software to run the phones that would allow third-parties to work on those devices, we can’t fix them.”10News spoke to Apple, who said they do work with Authorized third-party dealers that are not Apple Stores. Those specific repair shops have all the latest repair equipment and gadgets to fix all hardware and software problems.  2965

SAN DIEGO, California — A former Major League Baseball pitcher was awarded .3 million for injuries sustained after punching a man reportedly on LSD outside his Northern California home.Greg Reynolds claimed his career was cut short after he broke his hand punching Domenic Pintarelli on Jan. 16, 2015. Reynolds' attorney?Niall McCarthy says his client was attacked outside his home by Pintarelli, who was attending a party next door at a neighbor's house.McCarthy said both Pintarelli and the neighbor, Connor Pope, had taken LSD. Pope did not attack Reynolds but Pintarelli did, he alleges.Reynolds punched Pintarelli, breaking his pitching hand and costing his ability to "move and control" a baseball, McCarthy argues. Evidently, a jury agreed, awarding the former MLB pitcher .3 million in damages. The award includes 0,000 for Greg Reynolds's wife, Megan.Reynolds started pitching for the Colorado Rockies' minor league team in 2006 before moving up to the big leagues in 2008. He also pitched for the Texas Rangers in 2012 and the Cincinnati Reds in 2013.Reynolds went on to pitch in Japan in 2014 before the incident. The San Diego Padres signed Reynolds to a minor league contract in 2016 but ended up releasing him. After his baseball career ended, Reynolds returned to his alma mater of Stanford to earn a degree in economics, according to The Mercury News. He now works in finance, the paper reports. 1475

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- One person is confirmed dead after two boats collided nine miles offshore from Imperial Beach. Fishermen on the “Prowler” were on their way back from Mexican Waters when their boat collided with a mega-yacht, the "Attessa IV" Friday night. One of the survivors on the Prowler spoke exclusively with 10News about his experience. It was supposed to be a fun overnight fishing trip for father-son duo Hung and Ken Ngo.
