(KGTV) -- Former Vice President Joe Biden visited San Diego Friday night to discuss cancer research at the Salk Institute. Biden is pushing for national efforts to improve prevention and treatment of the disease. His son, beau died from brain cancer in 2015. RELATED: Meghan McCain and Joe Biden share emotional moment on 'The View' The Salk Institute is also launching its own initiative to study cancer. One of their goals is to eradicate childhood illnesses and premature birth for the March of Dimes. Join 10News this weekend and next weekend as we March for Babies. The North County March for Babies takes place Sunday, April 22 at Mance Buchanon park in Oceanside. LAKE HODGES (KGTV) - A San Diego woman tells 10News she was bit by a tick at Lake Hodges and diagnosed with Lyme disease a month later. Sheila Greer has hiked Lake Hodges for 33 years she tells 10News, "I've never had an issue." Greer hiked the same trails at the end of June. She says that's when she believes she got bit by a tick, "The trail had bushes coming up that I would have to brush through and something in the back of my mind said, that's a prime area for ticks. But, I discounted it because I've hiked there for 33 years." Greer got diagnosed with Lyme disease a month after the tick bite. Usually, tick bites have a ring around the bite but her's did not. For that reason, she thought it was a spider bite and waited to see a doctor. She tells 10News she struggled with neck pains and unbearable headaches. Greer finally got a Western Blot test which confirmed her diagnosis. The County of San Diego tells 10News, "Lyme disease is rare San Diego County and we have not had a positive tick found in many years." Because Greer thought she had a spider bite, she didn't know to look for a tick to bring to the county for testing. Greer has been seeing a doctor regularly and is now on antibiotics, "I'm taking antibiotics and I'll be taking antibiotics for a minimum of three months, maybe much longer." 1322

LEXINGTON, Kent. - Coronavirus has claimed more than 226,000 American lives, and it's been very harsh on members of older age groups. But here in Lexington, it was no match for Charles and Nellie Anness.Married since 1949, after meeting at a baseball game a year earlier in Harrodsburg, Charles (89) and Nellie (88) fought off the virus, like a batter fighting off a 3-2 pitch. "We feel pretty good, now that we get to go home," Nellie said from the entrance to Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital.Charles and Nellie believe they caught the virus while attending a church service in Gatlinburg, Tennessee more than one month ago. For ten days, the couple had to be separated at Baptist Health Hospital during treatment. While fighting back the tears, Nellie explained how that was the most challenging part of the entire ordeal given they'd barely spent one day apart over the last 71 years."We don't even like to talk about that. It was awful," Nellie said.After the hospital stay, a 16-day stint at Cardinal Hill followed, where they'd undergo a rehab program to improve their strength and ability to live on their own."I think they did great," said Emily Goggin, a therapist at Cardinal Hill, who worked extensively with the couple.The virus, as it's done to so many, attacked Charles and Nellie aggressively, but it spared them the thing they most needed in order to recover."I think love inspires us to be motivated to wake up and get out of bed each day," Goggin added.It inspired this couple to reach this day, the day they could finally go home together. We have something special," Nellie said. "I love him just as much as I ever have. Maybe more. LEMON GROVE, Calif. (KGTV) - An explosive fire broke out Wednesday afternoon at a home in Lemon Grove, Heartland Fire officials said.The flames erupted at 1783 Dupont Drive just before 4 p.m. and were accompanied by explosions, according to firefighters. When crews arrived at the scene, the home was 50 percent engulfed in flames.The Sheriff's Department told 10News neighboring homes were evacuated due to the safety risk.Crews at the scene resuscitated a cat in the front yard, 10News reporter Matt Boone said. It ran away after crews helped it.No one was injured.There was no immediate word on the cause of the fire. 628

Law enforcement arrested a man in connection with a West Palm Beach-area sledgehammer attack and theft of thousands of dollars?in February.Roady Sanozier, 38, is charged with hitting a courier, employed by Cord Financial Services, with a sledgehammer and stealing 8,000 in a heist at a business center on North Australian Avenue in Mangonia Park.On the day of the attack, the suspect fled the scene in a black Toyota Tundra. Law enforcement searched a neighborhood near the scene the day of the attack and robbery but did not arrest anyone.Sanozier, a former Cord Financial employee who was fired in August 2017 for stealing more than ,000 in cash from the company, was developed as a possible suspect in the robbery.A probable cause affidavit said that Sanozier posted a video on April 21 of himself near a black Toyota that was parked beside his car.Using that video and Google Maps, detectives traced the video to a home in Coral Springs, where they found him and took him into custody on April 25.Sanozier admitted to police that he wired ,000 cash to Haiti on Feb. 17 and bought three vehicles for a total cash value spent of ,500.A friend of Sanozier owned the Toyota Tundra, but investigators believe Sanozier was the getaway driver the day of the robbery.He faces homicide, battery, robbery and larceny charges in connection with the attack.  At a Wednesday morning court hearing, no bond was issued. If convicted, he could spend life in prison.  1564
