Mixed in with messages from those you know and love are texts trying to steal your information, money, or both.This holiday season, the Better Business Bureau says thieves are cranking up what's known as "smishing" because they use SMS to try and get to you."Their goal is to entice you to click on a link to get you to either a. download malware on to your cellphone, have you fill out a form that they link you to collect personal information, or send you to a page to make a payment so they can gather credit card information from you," said Bryan Oglesby with the Better Business Bureau.Some of these messages may appear legit, but the Better Business Bureau says you should always go straight to the source instead of replying.According to the BBB, online purchase scams are the most reported form of cyber theft for the last three years.It's when scammers use fake websites or emails to offer attractive deals."The top ways consumers fall victim to these scams are based on price. The price they are looking for the greatest deal. It's too good to be true offer. They act on it. NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) -- A car flipped into the front yard of a home in National City late Sunday night, police say. According to police, the crash happened on the 2500 block of Ridgeway Drive around 11:30 p.m. Police say the driver of the vehicle somehow lost control of the vehicle, flipping over and landing in the front of the home. The car then caught fire, but crews were able to quickly extinguish the flames before they spread. According to police, the crash took out a fence, street sign and a mail box. The driver fled the scene after the crash, sparking a hit-and-run investigation. 609

MONROE, Ohio -- Four Monroe High School students crashed on their way to prom Friday night, superintendent Phil Cagwin confirmed, trapping one inside the wrecked vehicle and ejecting another.All four were transported from the Millikin Road crash site to nearby hospitals: Three by ambulance to the West Chester Hospital and one airlifted to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, according to police."Our thoughts and prayers are with our students and their families," Monroe Board of Education president Brett Guido said in a statement.Students at prom were told about the crash, according to a post on the high school's Facebook page. MIRAMAR, Calif. (KGTV) - A Marine was honored Thursday after disarming a gunman in the Chesterton neighborhood the week prior.Sgt. Jake McClung received the Navy Commendation Medal at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. According to the Navy and Marines Awards Manual, "It may be awarded to any service member who distinguishes themselves by heroic or meritorious achievement."San Diego Police got a call at 6:18 p.m. on June 4 of a man armed with a rifle, pointing it at families and hitting cars with the gun near Linda Vista Rd. and Wheatley St.McClung was driving through his neighborhood when he saw the man, identified as a Navy sailor in the police report, holding a rifle and threw a firecracker at his vehicle.Sgt. McClung said he parked in his driveway and watched the man walk into the street and point his rifle at cars. McClung said the man's wife and toddler came out to try and talk with him and were crying. McClung said the man pointed the rifle at his family and that's when McClung stepped between the gunman and the family to try and de-escalate the situation.He said the man was acting erratically and that gave the man's wife and child a chance to get inside. McClung said he teamed up with the neighborhood security guard and walked up to the man, trying to calm him.McClung said when he saw an opening he reached for the rifle and was able to disarm him, but he took a couple punches to the face, breaking his nose. McClung said he and the security guard wrestled the sailor to the ground and handcuffed him before police arrived."I don't know if he had PTSD of not, but if he was suicidal I also wanted to protect him, because he had a gun, he was in the middle of the street. The security guard later told me he was about to shoot him, so if that would have happened, it would have cost his life too. Even though he was obviously in the wrong, we have to take care of our own and sometimes taking care of our own means protecting them from themselves," McClung said.The man was arrested on several felony charges, including felony vandalism, assault with a deadly weapon, possession of an illegal assault weapon, possession of a large capacity magazine. He has since bailed out, according to police.The struggle between McClung and the man happened steps away from a childcare facility and an elementary school that were set to open the next day. 2378

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — AT&T said crews have made significant progress restoring service to the region on Sunday morning following an explosion on Friday morning outside an AT&T data center.The explosion impacted widespread service interruption reaching outside of just Middle Tennessee. On Sunday morning, the company said power has been restored to four floors of the building and more than 65% of mobile sites affected by the explosion have been restored. More than three feet of water was pumped out of the building's basement on Saturday, however, access to some of the lowers is still limited. AT&T said on Sunday crews will be adding additional cabling and more generators to provide more power into the building to help with restoration efforts."Teams are working to safely bring additional equipment online and reroute services through other facilities in the region. While mobility services have been restored in many areas, we still have more than 17 portable cell sites on the air to aid in communication, including for restoration teams and first responders," AT&T said in an update. "We are bringing in additional resources to support the recovery of wireline voice and data services and expect to have a fleet of 24 additional trailers of disaster recovery equipment on-site by the end of the day."The company did not provide an exact time when it expects service to fully be restored.
