(KGTV) - An Alpine family woke up to panicked horses and a disturbing sight near their house: the remnants of burned sky lantern."Noticed the horses were panicking and running back and forth in their pens," said Lucy Olivier.Along Japatul Valley Road, Olivier and her husband woke up Saturday morning to terrified horses, bathed in sweat. One of them had injured his leg. The source of the horses' fear was just feet away: the burned-out remnants of a sky lantern. Banned in California, the small hot air balloons use candles to spark their flight.In the one Olivier discovered, there were birthday candles sitting on popsicle sticks, attached to straws and a large garbage bag. It landed near dry brush not far from the main house, an ominous sight in an area prone to wildfires."We were infuriated. Thank God it didn't start a fire, but it could have," said Olivier.In San Carlos, another anxious, but grateful family reported discovering a similar device and some burn marks on their roof on New Year's Day. It's the second time they have discovered a sky lantern on their property since Thanksgiving.Some 30 states have now banned sky lanterns, the suspected cause of wildfires from Utah to Washington to South Carolina. In Germany, police believe the device caused a fire at a zoo on New Year's Eve that killed more than 30 animals. After dozens of puppies were found in rural Pottawattamie County, Iowa with no food and water before being rescued Sunday, authorities ramped up their investigation into Young Gunz Kennel.They obtained a search warrant and confiscated items for several hours Tuesday.Sheriff deputies and animal control personnel hauled away a large number of kennels that were at the unlicensed facility, which was used for obedience and hunting training, as well as dog breeding. Investigators could also be seen snapping photos and collecting additional evidence that they could find at the site, which housed as many as 50 dogs before many of them were found inside their kennels severely malnourished. A total of four dogs have now been found dead, and 10 are missing.Copper was one of the dogs that was rescued on Sunday. When his owner Wil Beach picked him up, Copper had lost 20 pounds and was covered in feces. "He was very scared but still in high spirits, he was the same dog emotionally when I got him (back) than when I dropped him off,” says Beach.Beach says he took Copper and a 0 check to owner Dustin Young in January after high praises from friends. He says he did not suspect anything amiss when he made the drop-off. "When I was there it was neat and clean and organized and he was very talkative and he just seemed like he had a passion for dogs," says Beach.Beach is thankful that his two-year old pup is okay, with no major issues from the abandonment.  1500

(KGTV) - A fundraising campaign has been started to help an Alpine fire victim who gave up his chance to save his RV to help others.Jesus Mendoza returned home from work late Saturday afternoon to a towering wall of black and orange. Minutes later, fire crews arrived to tell him he had to evacuate."The smoke was really black, looked like an explosion behind the hillside," said Mendoza.For the past few years, he's been living in his RV on a property on Hidden Glen Road. He's been helping his landlord and friend since her husband passed away last year"She let me stay there. Made myself a promise that she comes first," said Mendoza.When it came time to evacuate, Mendoza says he helped his friend find boxes to pack, before helping round up her dog, cat, and 18 chickens from around her house. He then went to the home of a neighbor, who also needed help."She wasn't home. Helped retrieve her valuables, two dogs, and her vehicle," said Mendoza.The 40 minutes he spent helping would cost him. The RV needed gas and a battery, but he ran out of time. He and his landlord evacuated as the flames moved in. The next day, a neighbor sent him a video. Though his friend's home was spared, his RV was burned, along with his belongings. He had only grabbed a few photos of his kids and some clothes from the hamper. Also destroyed: his truck and a 1968 Ford Falcon he was restoring for his son. Remarkably, Mendoza says he's doing fine."Not upset, because I'm here, and those are just things," said Mendoza.Mendoza, who is a tree trimmer, says he is worried about losing all of his tools and climbing equipment. His friends starting a GoFundMe campaign. As of Thursday afternoon, it had raised more than ,700. Mendoza says he's beyond grateful."My mom taught me to treat others with the most respect, and it will come back to me.
