SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A motorist who fled a traffic stop in Encanto Tuesday led officers on a 40-minute pursuit that ended with his arrest near Lake Hodges, authorities reported. The man refused to yield when San Diego police tried to pull him over for a traffic violation in the 6800 block of Akins Avenue shortly after 9 a.m., SDPD public-affairs Officer Michael Stirk said. The motorist drove off to the east toward Spring Valley, then entered state Route 125 and headed north, Stirk said.Reaching Santee, the man entered SR-52 and headed west, then merged onto northbound Interstate 15 when he got to the Miramar area. While passing through northern San Diego with SDPD and California Highway Patrol personnel tailing him and tracking his pursuit aboard a police helicopter, the driver managed to avoid running over several spike strips that CHP officers hurled onto the roadway in his path. After entering Escondido, however, the man finally pulled to a stop on the side of the freeway near Ninth Avenue and was taken into custody without further incident about 9:45 a.m., Stirk said. The arrestee's name was not immediately available. 1139

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities reached out to the public Friday for help in identifying whoever has been hurling or shooting things at moving cars in Mission Bay Park in recent months, causing extensive property damage along with some injuries. On at least eight nights since November, someone has thrown or shot unidentified objects or projectiles at vehicles traveling in the area of Ingraham Street and West Mission Bay Drive, just west of SeaWorld San Diego, according to police. The targeted cars sustained damages, including dented bodies and broken windshields, totaling between 0 and ,000 each, officials said. Two drivers suffered minor cuts from flying glass.Since the crimes have taken place in the late evening or early morning on dark stretches of roadway, none of the victims has been able to provide a description of the responsible vandal or vandals.Anyone with information about any of the incidents is asked to call San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477 or contact the agency online at sdcrimestoppers.org. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An outbreak of leptospirosis, a contagious bacterial disease, has been reported in dogs in the region, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced Thursday.Since October, 34 confirmed and probable cases of leptospirosis have been documented among local dogs, primarily in the Hillcrest and Mission Hills areas. Several dogs required hospitalization and at least one was euthanized.Boarding at kennels that allow dog-to-dog interaction is a major risk factor, though some ill dogs only had contact with other dogs at dog parks. The kennels that were linked to cases notified the owners of all potential contacts of diagnosed cases and closed for at least two weeks for cleaning and disinfection.Signs of leptospirosis in dogs are varied and can include fever, muscle weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, low energy and frequent urination, which may be bloody. No human cases have been linked to this outbreak in dogs, but anyone who develops fever, headache, muscle aches -- especially in the back and calves -- or other illness after contact with a sick dog should see their health care provider. This week, the county sent a health advisory to local physicians and veterinarians about the outbreak.Leptospirosis is a disease caused by various species of spirochete bacteria called leptospira. These bacteria can infect multiple species of mammals, including humans, dogs, rats, mice, raccoons, skunks and opossums. The bacteria are shed in the urine of infected animals and may contaminate food, water, soil or bedding. Dogs and people can get infected through direct contact with skin abrasions, mucous membranes or by drinking contaminated water."When dogs visit kennels and parks and play, lick and sniff each other, they are at risk of getting these bacteria," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county public health officer. "If your dog shows any signs, you should take it to your vet immediately."A vaccine is available to prevent leptospirosis in dogs, especially for those boarding in kennels and frequenting dog parks. 2076

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities Wednesday publicly identified a Chula Vista city employee found slain in his home near Mount Helix.Chula Vista police personnel conducting a welfare check at the request of a co-worker found the body of 38-year-old Kevin Powell in his residence in the 4400 block of Carmen Drive in Casa De Oro shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday.Because the neighborhood is in an unincorporated area, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department was called in to take charge of the case, said sheriff's Lt. Thomas Seiver.Powell's death has been ruled a homicide, said Seiver, who declined to specify how the victim is believed to have died."The preliminary cause-of-death (finding) is being withheld for investigative reasons," Seiver said.Powell's work supervisor asked police to check on him after he missed several meetings, according to the sheriff's department. 878

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An El Cajon man was sentenced Friday to 14 years in prison for distributing fentanyl, some of which caused the fatal overdose of a former player for the San Diego Old Aztecs Rugby Football Club.Christopher Glenn Emison, 33, pleaded guilty earlier this year to a distribution of fentanyl count for selling more than 40 grams of the drug, some of which led to the death of 45-year-old Derrick Hotchkiss in his San Diego home on April 11, 2019.A co-defendant, 34-year-old San Diego resident Jeffrey Alden Blair, pleaded guilty in February and is due to be sentenced next month.Prosecutors say Hotchkiss had text messages on his phone indicating Emison sold him fentanyl the night before his death.Shortly after Hotchkiss' death, investigators searched Emison's home and vehicle and seized fentanyl, heroin residue, firearms, ammunition and other items indicating drug sales.Prosecutors say Emison admitted to knowing the fentanyl was dangerous and apparently sent text messages to Hotchkiss to warn him of the drug's strength but never received a response."Selling drugs is not a victimless crime. Selling drugs is a root cause of crime, cartel violence, the destruction of families and in this case, death," said DEA Special Agent in Charge John W. Callery.U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer said, "This case and the fact that deadly fentanyl continues to ravage our community, taking more than 300 lives this year alone in San Diego County, demonstrates the urgent need to hold these dealers of death accountable for their actions."A statement from the Old Aztecs Rugby Football Club said, "We continue to grieve our beloved Deez ... Saturdays won't be the same; he was a large man with a heart to match." 1723
