Before 7-year-old Faizan Zaki takes the stage at this year’s national spelling bee competition, he will take the stage to sing with his first-grade class in Allen, Texas. Zaki is the youngest participant in the 2019 Scripps National Spelling Bee. When asked how he felt about being the youngest speller, Zaki replies, “I just feel normal.” However, Zaki isn’t like most 7-year-olds. For one, he loves astronomy. “And my favorite thing about astronomy is like hypothetical objects like carbon stars and quasi stars,” Zaki says. He also loves science.“This is a periodic table, and it has 118 elements,” he explains.Not only does he know most of the elements by memory, but he knows how to spell them all, too.As for his favorite things to spell? Zaki says he loves long words. But even with his superior spelling skills, his parents are still shocked by his success. As a first-grader, he beat out sixth-graders to win his schools spelling bee. He eventually earned a spot on the national stage.“He loves it. I mean he loves the learning and words, and so that has been like, you know, it's just been very easy,” says his mother, Arshia Quadri.Zaki’s parents said they started studying words with him for fun.And even through they’re practicing a little bit more now, it’s still about having fun.“We just want him to be happy and, you know, experience that,” Quadri says. “You know the whole experience of going to the bee.”“And if he can spell a few words there and get to a few rounds, then good for him, that would be amazing,” says his father Zaki Anwar.To those with a dream, Zaki says to try hard and keep trying.“If you try, then you can probably win next time,” he says. 1689

Apple just bought the bulk of Intel's smartphone-modem business in a deal valued at billion.The deal includes about 2,200 Intel employees who will now join Apple, as well as intellectual property, equipment and leases, the two companies said in a joint release put out Thursday.Apple will now hold over 17,000 wireless technology patents, according to the release. Intel will still be able to develop modems for non-smartphone applications, such as PCs and autonomous vehicles.The deal still must undergo regulatory approval, but both companies said it's expected to close in late 2019.The acquisition will give Apple more of a role in developing key parts of its smartphones at a time when iPhone sales are faltering as devices last longer and people have stopped replacing them as frequently. The smartphone-modem chips allow phones to connect to wireless data networks.In April, Intel said it would no longer make 5G modems for smartphones, citing "no clear path to profitability and positive returns" in the business. As sweet as she is, her parents call her a “champ” because her life so far has been filled with countless hospital visits.“She’s such an easy-going baby, but you can tell it really gets to her to be in the hospital with all the IVs and the stickers and medicine and people coming in and poking you every two hours,” said Olive’s mother, Gloria Angel.Olive has a complex heart disease. It has required her to undergo multiple major surgeries, all of which have gone well, thanks to a new method of cardiac imaging. Children’s Hospital of Colorado is leading the nation as the first medical center combining 2D and 3D imaging to print an exact replica of patients’ hearts.“When olive came, we needed to take a picture of her pulmonary arteries because the left one was a little bit narrowed,” Dr. Jenny Zablah said.Dr. Zablah is the Pediatric Interventional Cardiologist who has been working with Olive. She says the 3D image allows the cardiologists to better picture what is going on so they can plan to fix the problem.Next, a soft 3d model is printed which gives doctors an opportunity to physically work with the model – determining how the veins and arteries will react to the implantation of stents and other devices during surgery.“It’s really cool that they’re using such advanced imagery. I was really grateful to know they were using the best of their technology to take care of her,” Angel said.Not only can surgeons anticipate the condition of the heart prior to surgery, but Dr. Zablah says they’ve also cut radiation and procedural time by more than half.“Every cath procedure involves radiation which increases risk of things like cancer. So, the main goal is trying to do every procedure in the cath lab with the least radiation possible,” Dr. Zablah said.And less time means patients won’t be under for so long.“What was really exciting about it is that they knew what they were up against before they got in there. Because the longer a kiddo is under anesthesia, the risks go up for negative things to happen,” Angel said.Once doctors are done with the model, they use it to give families a deeper understanding of how the heart functions. Then they’re allowed to take it home.“It’s kind of comforting in an abstract way,” Angel said. “You’re just like ‘wow.’”Although little Olive is expected to live a normal life, the model will always be a reminder of the challenges she overcame in her youngest years.“I never thought a tiny human being would teach me about strength. But she has.
