The American Civil Liberties Union asked a federal judge to block the Trump administration from separating children from their parents, claiming that more than 900 children, "including numerous babies and toddlers," have been separated since late June 2018.A federal court had ordered family separations to end at that time, except in cases where a parent is unfit or presents a danger to the child. But the 420
The Florida man accused of sending mail bombs to CNN offices and prominent Democrats pleaded guilty on Thursday in Manhattan federal court to 65 felony counts, including using weapons of mass destruction in an attempted domestic terrorist attack.Cesar Sayoc, 57, admitted in court to having mailed 16 explosive devices to a variety of officials -- primarily Democrats, including former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton and Sens. Cory Booker and Kamala Harris; and major Democratic donors, including George Soros and Tom Steyer -- and to CNN's offices in October 2018.None of the devices detonated and no one was injured. The last few months of 2018 saw an uptick in domestic terror arrests compared to some other quarters in recent years, a senior FBI official said.Nearly 25 were arrested over the last three months of 2018, said the official, who did not provide more recent data. The domestic terror arrests include but are not limited to far right/white nationalists. The official did not provide an explanation for the increase in that quarter. The FBI has approximately 900 open domestic terror investigations, the official told CNN. These are separate from international terrorism investigations that, for example, involve plots related to ISIS and al Qaeda, including so-called "lone wolf attacks."Notably, there are not domestic terror statutes in the US that allow for specific domestic terror charges. Prosecutors use other violations — such as of weapons possession laws — to charge people accused of plotting domestic terror attacks. Recently, a Coast Guard officer accused of seeking to kill politicians and journalists was charged with firearms and drug violations. And last year, a man espousing anti-Semitic views opened fire on a synagogue in Pittsburgh. Some recent case examples include:Christopher Paul Hasson — a Coast Guard lieutenant arrested last month on firearms and narcotics charges stemming from an FBI investigation that unearthed plans Hasson had for a 1373
The CDC has recently issued guidance indicating that up to nearly one half of antibody tests are inaccurate. While early indications are that having antibodies offers some protection against reinfection, the CDC said too little is known about antibodies to determine whether it is safe for a person to no longer need to conduct social distancing. Additionally, the CDC said that a positive test should not be used at this time to determine if an individual is immune. The CDC added, “Serologic test results should not be used to make decisions about grouping persons residing in or being admitted to congregate settings, such as schools, dormitories, or correctional facilities.”The CDC said that it recommends providers use multiple antibody tests on patients, and it obtains the most accurate tests available. The CDC said that the prevalence of those testing positive for antibodies among the general population is between 5 and 25, with higher figures coming from areas with localized outbreaks. The FDA has also warned that all antibody tests can produce false results, and that “broad use of the tests, when not appropriately informed by other relevant information, such as clinical history or diagnostic test results, could identify too many false-positive individuals.” 1286
The new year brings a new Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes, as Steve Harvey and the Prize Patrol gear up for another year of big prizes, including ,000 a year for life.Unfortunately, scammers are also gearing up to impersonate them, as one family learned. They sure could use that ,000 now to make up for the money they just lost to a scam.Official PCH letter arrives in mailLarenda Jackson and her mom, Annie Williams, have always dreamed of the Prize Patrol coming to their home. So when a letter arrived with an official seal and the signature of PCH's Dave Sayer, the older woman thought her ship had come in."He said I won," Williams said. "I won million."The letter explained she would receive million in the next few weeks, and that they were sending a check along with the letter to cover her insurance and attorney fees.So Williams followed the instructions, depositing the ,000 check in her PNC bank account, then sending ,000 of it to the "attorneys" once the deposit cleared."Mom was leery about it," daughter Larenda Jackson said. "But when they said the cash was available, the check cleared, she figured if she sent anything it was the check they sent her."She claims the bank told her the check had cleared. "Yes, I'm displeased with the bank because they said the funds were available," Jackson said. But a few days later, the women got some bad news from PNC Bank. "They said the ,000 check was insufficient, and that you have overdraft fees," Jackson said. In addition, she says the bank was asking her mother to return ,000 to them before they would allow her further access to her account — money she no longer had.It was all a scam.Warning signs of a PCH scam 1716
