BEIJING, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) on Sunday stressed it would assure that there is a stable supply of farm produce amid ongoing icy weather as the nation's most important traditional festival approaches. The ministry urged local authorities, in a notice on its website, to make every effort to ensure continued agriculture production as the freezing weather threatens abundant supplies, which are critical during the Spring Festival, the annual season for family reunions.Temperatures and humidity in vegetable greenhouses and corrals should be kept at proper levels, while exposure to frigid weather by poultry and livestock should be minimized. The ministry also asked local departments to facilitate the smooth transporting to markets of fresh farm produce.Freezing weather in south China has forced the evacuation of at least 58,000 people from their homes over the past week, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.Southern China will experience more icy rain and snow from Sunday to Thursday, where freezing weather has hit since the New Year's Day, the National Meteorological Center reported Sunday.
BEIJING, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor, Jia Qinglin, attended a ground-breaking ceremony for construction of Beijing Hyundai Motor's third auto plant in Shunyi District in suburban Beijing Sunday. Prior to the ceremony, Jia met with Hyundai Motor Chairman Chung Mong-koo and other guests. China and the Republic of Korea (ROK) have been upgrading relations, as well as political and cultural exchanges, since the forging of diplomatic ties in 1992, Jia noted.Trade between the two countries topped 150 billion U.S. dollars during January-September this year, up 36.7 percent year on year. China has become the ROK's largest trade partner and largest export market, Jia said, adding that the ROK is now China's third largest trade partner. Jia Qinglin (R, front), chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, meets with Hyundai Motor Chairman Chung Mong-koo (L, front) before attending a ground-breaking ceremony for construction of Beijing Hyundai Motor's third auto plant in Shunyi District in Beijing, Nov. 28, 2010. A joint-venture and subsidiary of Beijing Automotive Industry Holdings and Hyundai Motor, Beijing Hyundai was established in 2002 and manufactures Hyundai-branded automobiles for the Chinese market. While China' s economy has been growing at a stable and relatively fast pace, the automobile industry, a representative pillar sector in China, has shown robust growth and is expected to produce more than 15 million automobiles this year, Jia said. Also, the Chinese government has been encouraging automobile manufacturers to boost their research capacity and production of clean-energy-powered automobiles, seeking higher requirements for Beijing Hyundai in its future development, he said.Facing the new conditions, Beijing city and ROK Hyundai Motor must cooperate closely to improve high-technology and management levels to grasp the opportunities created by the boom in the Chinese automobile sector, he said.Beijing Hyundai's third plant, located in Yangzhen Township in Shunyi District, will have an annual production capacity of 400,000 vehicles when completed in 2012. Hyundai's two plants, also in Shunyi, currently produce a combined 600,000 units per year.
WASHINGTON, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- China's rapid economic growth is good for the U.S. workers, and the U.S. government is committed to improving bilateral economic relations with China, said U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke on Thursday."China has lifted almost 200 million people out of poverty (in the past two decades). And in the years ahead, hundreds of millions more Chinese will ascend into the middle class," Locke said at a U.S.-China commercial relations forum, which was held in Washington ahead of the U.S.-China Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade (JCCT) session scheduled for Dec. 14-15."The United States welcomes this growth because this is good for the people of China ... it's good for the global economy, and good for U.S. business and ultimately, U.S. workers," said Locke. He noted that as recently as 40 years ago, the commercial relationship between the United States and China barely existed. But in the recent decades, "we have seen our countries grow progressively closer."In 2009, the bilateral trade volume reached some 365 billion dollars. China was the largest supplier of U.S. goods imports in 2009 and was the third-largest market for U.S. exports, only after Canada and Mexico.Locke mentioned that as U.S. Commerce Secretary, he has visited China for four times."Each time I visit China, I'm absolutely amazed by the transformation and the progress within China," he said.Locke noted that although there are disagreements between the two sides, there are more opportunities for cooperation."In many areas, especially in emerging industries, like clean energy and biotechnology, the interests of China and the United States are tied together. And the reform as good for the U.S. will be good for China as well," he added.Locke also revealed that during the upcoming 21st session of the JCCT in Washington D.C., the two countries will seek to further "nurture and improve the most highly-scrutinized bilateral economic relationship on Earth.""This is our most important bilateral dialogue or mechanism for resolving trade and investment issues between our two countries," he stressed. The session will be co-chaired by Locke and U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk with Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan. U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack will also join the dialogue.
BEIJING, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- China Thursday called on parties involved in the Cote d'Ivoire crisis to solve disputes and differences through dialogue."We appreciate the positive efforts of the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to promote a peaceful settlement of the Cote d'Ivoire crisis," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei at a regular press briefing.Cote d'Ivoire has been in political crisis after both incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo and his rival Alassane Ouattara claimed victory in the presidential run-off of Nov. 28.The AU and the ECOWAS have sent a joint five-member high-level delegation to the Cote d'Ivoire to seek a peaceful resolution to the country's political crisis.Hong said peacefully settling the crisis is in the common interests of west African countries. He urged the parties involved in the crisis "to settle differences, achieve political reconciliation, and maintain national peace and stability through consultation."
