BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong visited Chinese-American Nobel physics laureate Yang Chen-ning at Tsinghua University in Beijing on Friday.Friday is Yang's 88th birthday and Liu extended her congratulations to Yang and praised his years of efforts in promoting China's education.Yang had made important contributions in fostering young Chinese talent and promoting the country's educational development as well as academic exchanges and cooperation between China and the United States.His efforts were even more remarkable after 2003 when he returned and settled in China.Liu discussed with Yang about China's education reform and the Outline of the National Plan for Medium-and Long-term Educational Reform and Development.Education Minister Yuan Guiren accompanied Liu on the visit.

SHANGHAI, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- A total of 1.03 million people visited the Shanghai World Exposition on Saturday, a record number since the Expo opened. The total number also exceeded an earlier record.The Expo had received some 64.62 million visitors by the end of Saturday, the 169th day since the event began on May 1. The previous record was set during the 1970 Osaka World Expo in Japan, which about 64 million people attended over a six month period.Attendance may be increasing since this is the first weekend after the week-long National Day holiday and the second to last weekend before the final seven designated days from Oct. 25-31.Since early this morning, the Expo' s public transportation system has been under great pressure as visitors have been seen throughout the Expo site.Visitors needed to queue up for more than one hour before being admitted to most pavilions. Some popular pavilions, including the Oil Pavilion and Space Home Pavilion, stopped visitors from queuing up by 4 or 5 p.m. because of the large crowds.Many visitors could only walk around, take pictures outside of pavilions, or have picnics at rest area. Further, all parades were canceled due to the large number of visitors.Zhou Qian and Dai Shishi from Hangzhou described the long queues as "horrible". But Zhou said she had been prepared for the situation as they visited seven pavilions, including the Egyptian and Spanish pavilions.A visitor surnamed Zhang and her daughter, a high school student in Shanghai, entered the site at 11 a.m. but had only visited three pavilions by 6:30 p.m."And all of them are small ones. It's not a proper time to come, but it's not easy for my daughter to be free," Zhang said.A series of measures have been taken to deal with the situation, according to the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo.When the number exceeded 700,000 visitors, organizers made announcements to visitors through the World Expo official website, TV Station, mobile televisions, and telecommunication operators.Visitors were persuaded to avoid peak times on televisions seen on subways in the morning, and in the afternoons they were advised not to continue entering the site today.

JERUSALEM, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Middle East envoy Wu Sike on Wednesday met with Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Dan Meridor in Jerusalem. They discussed Sino-Israeli relations and the current status of the Middle East peace process.China has consistently advocated that all concerned parties settle their differences through negotiations, and achieve comprehensive peace in this region, said Wu. The direct talks between Israel and the Palestinians, which started early September, is an important opportunity in the peace process, and has firm support from China, he added.Wu said that China is deeply concerned about the present stalemate in the talks. Chinese government calls for efforts from all parties to show flexibility and compromise on various issues, including settlement construction, so as to put the negotiation back on track, reach a final-status agreement, and realize peaceful coexistence between Israel and the Palestinians, he said.Meridor speaks highly of the active role China has played in promoting the Middle East peace process. Israel is now working to achieve the two-state solution, he said, adding that his government is willing to coordinate with other parties and find a solution to break the deadlock in direct talks.Israel is the second leg of Wu's Middle East tour, which will take him also to Palestinian territories, Egypt and Turkey.Israel and the Palestinians resumed direct negotiations on September 2 in the United States. However, the talks were halted when Israeli settlers restarted building in the West Bank after Sept. 26, when a 10-month settlement freeze ended. BEIJING, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- U.S. probe into Chinese clean energy policies, dubbed Section 301, will harm the United States itself by revealing more of its own subsidies to new energy businesses, Zhang Guobao, head of the National Energy Bureau, said Sunday evening.The U.S. Trade Representative's office started the investigation on Oct. 15 in response to the United Steelworkers Union's complaint on Sept. 9 that China's support for its renewable energy industries gave Chinese producers unfair edges over competitors."Chinese subsidies to new energies companies are very small, but the United States had subsidized the new energy enterprises with 4.6 billion U.S. dollars in cash in the first nine months of 2010, including 3 billion U.S. dollars to wind power enterprises," Zhang said.Zhang rejected charges that China's wind power bid prefers Chinese enterprises and has discriminated against foreign companies."China has no discriminatory items on new energy equipment producers," Zhang said.Many foreign wind power equipment producers participated in bidding in China and some won biddings from 2003 to 2005, Zhang said.But chances for them to win have been dropping as they offer prices much higher than the Chinese companies, Zhang said."In contrast to China's open attitude, the United States issued a bill in 2009 to subsidize renewable energies, energy efficiency and smart power grid sectors. Among the subsidies, 25.2 billion U.S. dollars went to the renewable energy sectors," Zhang said.The subsidized U.S. solar power sectors are required to use domestically made equipment in the six-month rule starting Aug. 16 in 2010, Zhang said."How much on earth has China exported new energy products to the United States?" The U.S. General Electric Company, however, exported 80,000 kw of wind turbines to China in 2005 and the figure increased to about 340,000 kw in 2009," Zhang said, adding that its total wind turbine exports to China topped 1.13 million kw in the past five years."China's wind power (equipment) market stood at 85 billion yuan in 2009, about 21 percent of which was imported from overseas," Zhang said, adding that it showed China's wind power provided large opportunities for foreign producers to send exports to China.China and the United States should carry out dialogues in new energy sectors, Zhang said.The United States had proposed to communicate through video meetings on Oct. 12 with China on new energy products, but it also had been postponing the dialogue before declaring the probe on Oct. 15."I was very much astonished at it, wondering what the United States wants. Do they want fair trade, a normal dialogue or transparent information? ...Judging from the procedures, I believe (politicians of) the United States are more willing to get votes," Zhang said.In a statement Saturday, China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) expressed "regret" over the U.S. probe on Chinese clean energy products and said China would defend its interests in the World Trade Organization (WTO) rules."The union's complaint is groundless and irresponsible" as both parties should act in line with the WTO rules, said an official with MOC's Bureau of Fair Trade for Imports and Exports in its statement.The statement said the United States was subsidizing up to 2,300 energy-related programs, including clean-energy projects.

BEIJING, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- Vice Premier Li Keqiang has said China would advance practical cooperation with the European Union (EU) in all areas.Li made the remarks Friday when meeting with a delegation from the European People's Party and European Democrats (EPP-ED), which is the largest group in the European Parliament.China hopes the two sides work together to expand common interests, respect each other's core interests and major concerns, so as to promote the China-EU relationship in a maturer and more steady way, Li said during the meeting.Since the two sides forged diplomatic ties 35 years ago, China and the EU had scored leap-forward development in bilateral relationship, which was exerting more and more influence to the world peace and development, Li said.Noting inter-party contacts constitute an important part of China-EU relations, Li, also member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said the CPC is willing to deepen dialogue and exchanges with the EPP-ED.Joseph Daul, chairman of the EPP-ED and also head of the delegation, said he is willing to cement inter-party exchanges with the CPC and push forward the EU-China relations.
