(AP) — Long Beach police say a shuttle bus driver who took passengers on a long, scary ride wasn't kidnapping them: he was just lost.Passengers began jumping out of the bus windows Thursday night when their expected five-minute ride to the "Dark Harbor" Halloween event at the Queen Mary tourist attraction turned into a long ride into neighboring Carson.The Long Beach Press-Telegram says police report the driver became disoriented by street closures.Some of the 20 to 30 passengers on board said the driver refused to heed their demands to stop the bus. Cellphone video showed some jumping out of windows. After several 911 calls, authorities stopped the bus.Authorities say they're still looking into a battery allegation that the driver punched a man who wanted him to stop.Passengers told KABC-TV they pleaded with the driver to stop and let them off but he wouldn't respond, and when he struck a rider they began jumping out the bus windows. 971

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A woman was arrested Wednesday night after police say she hit her neighbor with her SUV in Chollas View.According to police, the incident happened on the 200 block of 47th Street near the 47th Street Trolley Station around 2 p.m. Police say the victim, only described as a 50-year-old white man, saw a woman, later identified as Tantrina Spencer-Simmons, 24, beating her 8-year-old sister with a belt. According to police, the victim confronted Simmons about the beating when she put her younger sister into a white Mitsubishi SUV. While the victim stood in the parking lot calling police, authorities say Simmons stepped on the gas and “intentionally ran over the male victim.”Simmons then fled the scene. Police say the victim sustained severe and life-threatening injuries. Police were able to locate and arrest Simmons on the 4500 block of Market Street around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. 915

San Diego (KGTV)- Starting today, additional background checks are now required for people to buy ammunition. The system roll-out is leaving some store owners frustrated. "It's going to be a lot harder for us to come in and buy ammo," says customer George Garcia. The state law went into effect today, but it wasn't until 7 a.m. that the software went live. "It is frustrating because we had to wait until the day of for the law to go into effect and the system to be in place," says Danielle Rudolph, Director of Sales Operations at Poway Weapons and Gear Range. "Then we still have to train staff properly." The store must keep a record of the sales for five years. The customer must have California drivers license or ID and pay an additional fee before they can even get their hands on the ammo. "The basic ammunition eligibility check Is a dollar every time you buy. That is for people who have purchased firearms in California before," says Rudolph. "Then there's the standard one, that is . (AP) — Scientists say they have found an elusive chameleon species that was last spotted in Madagascar 100 years ago.Researchers from Madagascar and Germany said Friday they've discovered several living specimens of Voeltzkow’s chameleon during an expedition to the northwest of the African island nation.A team led by scientists from the Bavarian Natural History Collections said genetic analysis determined that the species is closely related to Labord’s chameleon.“These animals are basically the mayflies among vertebrates,” said Frank Glaw, curator for reptiles and amphibians at the ZSM, told the AP.Researchers believe that both reptiles only live during the rainy season. They hatch from eggs, grow rapidly, spar with rivals, mate, and then die during a few short months."The assumed short life might also partly explain why this splendid species got 'lost' for many decades, since most roads in its habitat are not accessible in the wet season," researchers wrote in a report in the journal Salamandra. 1019
