HANGZHOU, July 4 (Xinhua) -- A new regular direct passenger sea route between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan was officially opened Saturday after a ship safely returned from Taiwan.The passenger ship, Coscostar, returned to the Damaiyu Port, Taizhou City of eastern Zhejiang Province Saturday, making it the second port on the mainland that has served the regular direct sea route with Taiwan, said He Jinliang, deputy head of the city's Taiwan affairs office.On June 26, the ship, carrying more than 500 passengers, traveled about 302 km to the Keelung Port of Taiwan, He said.With a tonnage of 26,800, the ship, owned by the China Ocean Shipping Companies Group, could carry about 600 passengers, 256 containers and 150 automobiles.The COSCO Star Passenger Ro-Ro Ship is berthed inside the Dabaiyu Port, prior to its maiden voyage to Keelung of Taiwan, at Taizhou City, east China's Zhejiang Province, June 26, 2010.The ship is scheduled to shuttle once a week. It will depart from Damaiyu in Yuhuan County on Saturday night and return the following Friday. The single trip would take eight to nine hours, traveling at various speed.Wang Yihao, deputy head of Yuhuan County, said the standard ticket costs 600 yuan (88.6 U.S.dollars) and the deluxe class ticket costs 1,000 yuan."The prices are nearly half that of airline tickets. BEIJING, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature will discuss the constitutional reform package of Hong Kong, which refers to the amendments to the methods of selecting the city's Chief Executive and forming the Legislative Council in 2012, during a bimonthly session scheduled from Aug. 23 to 28.The draft amendments to Annexes I to the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region concerning the methods for the selection of the Chief Executive was submitted to the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee for approval by Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang.The draft amendments to Annexes II concerning the formation of the city's Legislative Council was submitted to the NPC Standing Committee for the record.The Legislative Council of Hong Kong passed the draft amendments in June, before Donald Tsang gave his consent to draft amendments later in the month.According to Monday's Chairmen's Council of the NPC Standing Committee, presided over by NPC Standing Committee Chairman Wu Bangguo, lawmakers will also continue to deliberate draft amendments to the law on officers in reserve service, the draft law on mediation, as well as the draft law on the application of laws to civil relationships involving foreign interests.Lawmakers will also deliberate for the first time draft amendments to the law of deputies to the NPC and local People's Congresses, draft amendments to the Criminal Law, the draft law on intangible cultural heritages, and the draft revision of the soil and water conservation law.Also on the agenda of the upcoming session are discussions of the reports on implementation of the national economic and social development plan and budgets, among others.

BEIJING, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Education on Friday said that Taiwan's new amended laws would be beneficial to the cross-Strait educational exchanges.On Thursday, the Taiwan regional legislature adopted amendments to three laws, which would allow local colleges to accept students from the Chinese mainland and recognize degrees from mainland schools, except for medical schools.The ministry said in a statement that Taiwan should not put in place discriminatory policies that might harm mainland students."We hope related authorities in Taiwan could make good plans, offering attractive colleges and majors for, and take effective measures to protect the legitimate rights and interests of mainland students," said the statement.Under the amended laws, mainland students can not apply for schools and colleges related to the island's security nor attend the exams of civil servants and professionals such as doctors and lawyers.Taiwan's education department said in a statement that it would issue two detailed regulations in line with the amendments in September. The first group of postgraduate students are expected to arrive next March and the first college students can enroll next September.
