When 9-year-old William McLeod went to his Utah public school on Wednesday, he knew some of his classmates might ask him about the ashen cross he wore on his forehead for Ash Wednesday. He didn't think his teacher would tell him it was inappropriate and make him wash it off."It was really bad," William told CNN by phone Friday. "I went to the office and I was crying and I felt like I was in trouble."William's teacher has been placed on administrative leave while the Davis School District investigates, officials said in a statement, calling the teacher's actions "unacceptable."The teacher told him his ashes were 'inappropriate,' grandmother saysWilliam's grandmother, Karen Fisher, said he went to school after an Ash Wednesday Mass at their Catholic church.During the service, William, like legions of faithful all over the world, had an ash cross placed on his forehead to mark the beginning of Lent, a season of prayer and penance that Christians observe ahead of Easter.Fisher told her grandson he didn't have to get the ashes if he didn't want to. And if he went to school with them, she told him, people would probably ask him about what the symbol meant."People are going to look at you like you've got dirt on your head," she explained to him, "and that's OK. You explain this is Ash Wednesday and you're a Catholic. And he goes, 'OK, I want to wear them.'"It was his first time getting ashes on his forehead for Ash Wednesday, William told CNN.But hours later, Fisher got a call from the school's principal, who told her that William's teacher had asked him what was on his forehead, and he told her it was an ash cross for Ash Wednesday. She told him it was "inappropriate," Fisher said, "so take it off."The teacher handed William an antiseptic wipe and made him remove the ashes in front of his peers, Fisher said."I was furious," she told CNN. "This is who we are. This is part of our life as Catholics."Fisher noted there's a large Mormon population in Utah, but she said she's lived there for decades, and nothing like this has ever happened to her."I was just kind of shocked," she said. The school district and teacher apologizeWilliam went to the school counselor, who made it clear he was not in trouble and had done nothing wrong, the boy told CNN.The Davis School District has 2315

Two-month-old Mavis Loan’s main meal consists of milk. But long before she arrived, her parents were thinking about her nutrition. “Once she was pregnant, it was instantly ‘what goes into you goes into her.’ And I know once we do start feeding her solids, it'll be very conscious, yes,” says Mavis’ father, Conor Loan. Loan says he and his wife are proactive in making sure their daughter has a healthy diet. “We want her to be healthy, and we don't want any of the, you know, bad side effects of like childhood obesity,” Loan says. Soon, it will be easier for other parents to follow healthy tips for their children. For the first time, the State Departments of Health and Agriculture (USDA) is providing dietary guidelines and recommendations for pregnant women, infants and young children. Recommendations include what and how much they should eat. Dr. Theodore Stathos, a pediatric gastroenterologist at Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children, says he’s relieved to see health guidelines for pregnant women and young children. “When you read through most of the baby primer books, they talk a little bit about nutrition and choices, but they don't limit the quantities of simple sugars and they don't certainly limit the quantities of fats,” Dr. Stathos says. A 2008 study in the medical journal The Lancet found malnutrition from conception to 24 months was linked to obesity, heart disease and other health problems. Lucy Sullivan, founder of the nonprofit 1000 Days, says "if a child is overweight by age 5, there is a great risk the child will be dealing with obesity his entire life. It can be a life sentence." Dr. Stathos says it can be harder to reverse changes as children get older. That's why although the guidelines won't be issued until next year, he says parents can start now making sure their children have a balanced meal “It's very easy to pick them for them, and if you really want to have a cooperative child, as soon as they are able to point and make choices, you can take them to the grocery store with you and give them choices between two healthy things,” Dr. Stathos suggests. 2118

WASHINGTON (AP) — With lives and the economy hanging in the balance, President Donald Trump is weighing how to refine nationwide social-distancing guidelines to put some workers back on the job amid the coronavirus pandemic. At a virtual town hall hosted by Fox News on Tuesday, Trump said he'd reassess after the current 15-day period of social distancing. The president said he is hoping the country will be reopened by Easter. His enthusiasm for getting people back to work comes as he takes stock of the political toll the outbreak is taking. It also sets up a potential conflict with medical professionals, including many within his government, who have called for more social restrictions.Health experts have made clear that unless Americans continue to dramatically limit social interaction, staying home from work and isolating themselves, the number of infections will overwhelm the health care system, as it has in parts of Italy, leading to many more deaths. While the worst outbreaks are concentrated in certain parts of the country, such as New York, experts warn that the highly infectious disease is certain to spread. The president’s comments come as Senate leaders work to negotiate a deal to ease the economic pain of the coronavirus pandemic in the U.S. Both Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and the top Democrat, Sen. Chuck Schumer, say an agreement appears close. The package would free up nearly trillion to help businesses and workers. A key provision in the emerging package would provide stepped-up unemployment insurance for workers furloughed because of the pandemic. After being ravaged for days, stocks rose as congressional and White House negotiators approached a deal. Any deal struck by the Senate would need House approval next. 1782

With Black Friday and Cyber Monday coming up, there's sure to be tons of great deals online, but many of those from third-party sellers are just too good to be true. 179
