NANTONG, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- The first Sino-American Dialogue on Rule of Law and Human Rights ended Sunday in Nantong, a city in east China's Jiangsu Province.     The two-day symposium was jointly organized by the China Foundation for Human Rights Development (CFHRD) and National Committee on United States-China Relations (NCUSCR) of the United States.     Representatives from China and the United States exchanged views on topics of government transparency, pretrial detention, labor disputes and lawyers' role.     Prof. Jerome Cohen of the New York University School of Law said the symposium was "a good exchange" and the U.S. delegation learned more about China.     "We talked about some sensitive issues with people we didn't know before. This is a big good start," Cohen told Xinhua.     "The dialogue is a sign of increasing exchanges between non-governmental organizations," Huang Mengfu, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and CFHRD chairman, addressed the opening ceremony on Saturday.     The symposium attracted more than 30 Chinese and U.S. law professionals and scholars.

SHANGHAI, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- Shanghai Party chief Yu Zhengsheng met here Saturday with visiting Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, vowing to take the opportunity of the Shanghai World Expo to upgrade bilateral economic and environmental cooperation.     The theme of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo is Better City, Better Life, and the core of this theme is to achieve harmony between man and nature, said Yu, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and secretary of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee.     "We will step up the transformation of economic development mode and coordinate the various social interests, and promote development through reform and innovation," he said. In 2008, the total trade volume reached 4.87 billion U.S. dollars.

SHANGHAI, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- President Barack Obama said here on Monday the United States would continue to fully support the one-China policy, and would be very pleased to see the improving cross-strait relationship.    "I have been clear in the past the United States supports a one-China policy. We do not want change that policy or approach," he said during a dialogue with Chinese youth in the nation's economic hub Shanghai.     "I am very pleased with the reduction of tensions and improvement of the cross-strait relations," he said. STOCKHOLM, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's Geely Automobile on Wednesday have been confirmed as preferred bidder in the ongoing discussions concerning the possible sale of Volvo Car Corporation.     Ford said while it would be engaging in more detailed and focused negotiations with Geely, no final decisions have been made, reported the Swedish news agency TT.     Ford believes Geely has the potential to be a responsible future owner of Volvo and to take the business forward while preserving its core values and the independence of the Swedish brand. "We have no specific timeline to conclude the discussions," a statement of Ford was quoted as saying by TT.     It also pointed out that Ford would continue to cooperate with Volvo in several areas after a possible sale, Ford said it does not intend to retain a shareholding in Volvo.     "Ford's objective in our discussions with Geely is to secure an agreement that is in the best interests of all the parties," Lewis Booth, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Ford Motor Company, said in the statement.     "Any prospective sale would have to ensure that Volvo has the resources, including the capital investment, necessary to further strengthen the business and build its global franchise, while enabling Ford to continue to focus on and implement our core ONE Ford strategy," Booth added.     "Volvo's management team welcomes today's announcement as a positive step forward," Volvo CEO Stephen Odell said.     "At Volvo, we are continuing to keep our attention firmly fixed on engineering and building great Volvo cars, to reduce our cost base and to return the business to sustainable profitability at the earliest possible opportunity," he added.
