Chengdu - The mention of twice-cooked pork, pickled vegetables and hot pot is guaranteed to whet the appetite of any gourmet visiting Sichuan Province. But a report released by the Sichuan provincial disease control and prevention center may make them think twice before tucking into such delicacies.According to the Report on Sichuan Residents' Nutrition and Health, around 10 million of the 87 million Sichuanese suffer from hypertension.Deng Ying, a leading official at the center, said that the problem is a result of the high levels of cholesterol in the hot pot dishes popular with local people. In addition, the average Sichuan resident's salt intake is 10 g a day, 4 g more than the amount recommended by doctors, Deng said.Li Ping, a doctor at the Sichuan No 5 Hospital in Chengdu, added: "Sichuan people like salty food. For example, pickled vegetables are a regular accompaniment to many families' meals."The latest investigation into the causes of death of Sichuan people, conducted two years ago, showed that chronic lung, cerebrovascular and heart diseases are the biggest culprits."Cerebrovascular and heart diseases are related to hypertension. If high blood pressure is not effectively controlled, it can result in cerebrovascular and heart problems," Deng said. The center's investigation also found that about 2.5 million people in Sichuan are diabetic."The higher a family's income, the higher the incidence of diabetes," Deng said. She attributed the problem to a change in diet. "Most people like eating meat rather than potatoes," she said.According to an investigation in 1992, the average Sichuan person ate 186 g of potatoes a day. But the daily intake has now dropped to 73.9 g, while the daily intake of meat has risen from 63.8 g in 1992 to 91.6 g.The average national meat intake is 78.6 g a day, Deng said. Many hypertension and diabetes sufferers are elderly urban residents."Older people know less about the right way to eat. They usually consider meat as good food," said Huang Suzhen, a chef in Chengdu. But the provincial disease control and prevention center found that most people below 40 are indifferent to the idea of changing their eating habits to prevent chronic diseases. Almost all those who consider chronic diseases problematic are above 50 and have already contracted such diseases."Many young people do not care about the right diet. They think they will be healthier if they eat more meat," Huang said.According to Deng, many young people did not know they were suffering from hypertension when the center conducted the investigation.Deng suggested people eat more potatoes, fruit and vegetables, take a proper amount of meat, milk and eggs, take less salt and quit smoking. "Taking more exercise is also important," she said. The investigation by Deng's center is the largest probe into the province's nutrition and health situation. The study, launched five years ago, is part of the fourth national nutrition and health investigation sponsored by the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Science and Technology and the National Bureau of Statistics.

BEIJING, March 10 -- Tianjin's mayor assured investors Sunday that the city's pilot program, allowing mainlanders to invest in Hong Kong-listed shares, is on track.     "There's a lot of preparation involved. Risk assessment and research is under way to open the door for mainlanders to invest in the Hong Kong stock market," Huang Xingguo, mayor of Tianjin, said Sunday.     "The project's going smoothly, but timing depends on central government approval. I can assure you that Tianjin's status as a pilot city (for financial reform) will not change," he said.     The scheme is in line with the nation's economic development and investor demand and will be an effective way to bring in conversion of the renminbi via capital accounts, Guo Qingping, chief of Bank of China's (BOC) Tianjin branch, said on the sidelines of yesterday's NPC session.     But authorities are cautious about rushing the program through, due to its complexity and risk.     "One risk is hot money flowing into and out of the mainland," Guo said.     BOC was originally expected to be the only financial institution providing the program, but Guo said the details are still being ironed out.     The trial scheme was announced in August last year as a way to diversify mainland investor channels. But it's been put on hold amid the unfolding US subprime crisis and global stock market uncertainty.     Preparation for the program includes payment systems, renminbi conversion, regulation changes as well as extensive risk assessment, Huang said.     Liu Mingkang, chairman of the China Banking Regulatory Commission, told China Daily earlier that no timetable has been set for the pilot scheme, which will allow mainlanders to invest directly in Hong Kong-listed shares. The regulator stressed that more research into the system is needed.     Meanwhile, a timetable is not yet available for Tianjin's new offshore financial center, which is also subject to further research, according to Guo from BOC.

SHANGHAI: This city will soon complete its goal of creating a full-time job for at least one member of every out-of-work family, officials said.Shi Juemin, a vice-director of the Shanghai municipal labor and social security bureau, said the city is on target to offer jobs to people who are of legal working age and are able to work."Members of more than 7,100 jobless families in Shanghai have found employment, and the remaining 30 families are on a waiting list," Shi said during an interview on the bureau's online chatting program. "And they will soon have jobs."Shi did not give a deadline. The city's government has launched several job-creation drives since 1997.Neighborhoods have set up their own unemployment databases and offer job ideas to people according to their individual needs. The unemployed will either be given work according to their qualifications or will receive job training. The government has set up training centers, organized job fairs and guided the unemployed into newly created public sector posts such as crossing guards, sanitation workers and parking lot or community security guards.According to a labor bureau report released earlier this year, Shanghai's government had "bought" - or created and paid for - 240,000 jobs by the end of last year.Hiring people as nurses or home care providers for the aged will have the additional benefit of helping the government deal with the city's rapidly aging population.By the end of last year, the city's unemployment rate was 4.4 percent. And a new law that is in the pipeline is expected to improve employment services. The law will assign responsibility for creating employment and forbid discrimination against women and people with diseases."Companies will have to clearly state the salary when hiring people," Shi said. And employers will have to be very careful with their recruitment advertisements. Cheats will be fined.

Police will charge 38-year-old Wu Shengli next week with kidnapping and injuring Wang Bingrong, Party chief of Weining County in southwestern Guizhou Province, on April 13. "We are making final preparations to conduct legal proceedings for the procuratorate departments," a police officer told China Daily yesterday. Wang is still in hospital, according to an official of the county office. The Guangzhou-based Nanfang Weekend reported the case yesterday. According to the newspaper, the kidnapping occurred at the Party chief's home at about 8 pm and the kidnapper demanded a ransom of 21 million yuan (.73 million) for his release. Wang tried to call a local finance official for help, but he thought Wang was playing a joke on him. It was not until the next morning when the official received a second call from Wang that public security departments were alerted. Wang was found seriously injured and rushed to hospital. "There were three big wounds on his head," one of Wang's nurses from Weining County People's Hospital said on April 20. "Surface wounds have healed, but there is still a hematoma inside his head." Wu, from Hubei Province, was captured "without difficulty" and put under criminal custody, the newspaper said. He used to work as a truck driver for a local gold mining company. While officials remain tight-lipped about the case, rumors of why Wang was targeted have spread. "It is a pure kidnap case for money, and there is nothing between Wang and the kidnapper," Li Zhengchao, a local official told the Guangzhou newspaper. But others are not convinced given that Weining is a remote county and kidnapping a top official poses high risks. Two mine explosions in the coal-rich county last May and June killed 20 workers, leading to the shutdown of more than 400 illegal mines. Wang is believed to have ordered the closure of more than 2,000 illegal mines in one year. In Weining, Wang is known for his boldness in streamlining local government bodies. Over-staffing of departments has been a problem in the county. For example, there are as many as six or seven vice-directors for a small department, as compared to two, regulated by the State. Wang's reform has reduced the ranks by more than 100 senior officials. "Many officials could previously stay in their posts until aged 58, but now they have to step down at 50," said a local official. Last November, Wen Jiangang, the former head of Xingren County, was stabbed to death together with five other family members. He was also known for his tough stance on coalmine safety. Wen had closed more than 300 illegal coalmines within six months.

LOS ANGELES - More Chinese tourists are expected to visit the United States as new travel rules between the two nations are pending, a report said on Sunday.Southern California is a likely destination for middle- and upper-class visitors with money to spend, said the Los Angeles Times.Travels agencies are preparing for what they hope could be a boom in new Chinese tourism to the United States that is expected to occur next year. Both nations are finalizing a deal to ease entry restrictions and lift a ban in China on promoting travel to the United States, according to the paper. The negotiations have been going on for several years, but China's government news agencies and sources at the US Commerce Department said a deal should be completed within the next few weeks, said the paper. The new travel rules are expected to be a particular boom to Southern California, which already sees more Chinese tourists - 110,000 in Los Angeles County last year - than anywhere else in the United States. But travel officials expect that number to grow significantly if more members of China's emerging middle and upper classes are able to travel to the region for vacations.China's travel industry is currently prohibited from marketing the United States as a travel destination because of disputes over the strict entry process initiated after 9/11 - a reality that US officials blame on the need for national security and concerns about visitors overstaying their visas, said the paper.
