A 3-year-old boy died after falling into a restaurant grease trap Monday morning in Rochester, New York, police said.Rochester Police Department Investigator Francis Camp said they believe the boy fell through a plastic lid that gave way and into the grease trap embedded in the ground outside a Tim Hortons restaurant. The grease trap was covered with a green plastic lid -- much like a manhole cover -- that helped it blend into the surrounding grass, he said."The lid was on there, it looks like the child ran across it and it popped open and he fell into the trap," he said. The grease trap is 2-and-a-half feet in diameter, according to police.Camp said a witness found the child in the grease trap minutes after he was reported missing. The witness saw the boy and pulled him from the trap and started administering CPR, Camp said. The boy's name has not been released.Attempts were made to revive the boy but they were unsuccessful, according to Camp."We have a horrifying episode here that happened today," he said. "We're asked all the time, 'What's the worst thing you encounter as a police officer?' and this is number one."The medical examiner's office told CNN the cause of death will be released in coming days. The city is currently pouring concrete around the opening in the ground where the grease trap was located and putting a metal lid on it, according to Camp.CNN reached out to the NY Buildings Administrative Enforcement Unit to ask if this location's grease interceptor was up to code.Tim Hortons provided CNN with the following statement:"What occurred today was a tragedy and on behalf of the Tim Hortons family, we offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the young boy who passed away. Tim Hortons is fully cooperating with authorities. As there is an ongoing police investigation, we have no further comment at this time."Camp said police will be following up with the DA's office, OSHA and the medical examiner's office.A 3-year-old child died in Auburn, Alabama, after falling into a grease pit in October 2017 while on a family outing at an 2099

The NASA SpaceX Crew Dragon took off into the sky over the weekend. It was SpaceX’s first crewed mission in history. For some, it seemed like a pipe dream. But the launch’s success crested a renewed sense of hope for the future of the industry.“It’s one of those things where any success in the commercial space realm is beneficial to all of the players in that realm,” Dave Ruppel explained. Ruppel is the Director at the Colorado Air and Space Port, one of the 12 licensed spaceports in the U.S. approved for launching spacecraft. He said successful events like this help build interest and trust with the public. “Things like the SpaceX launch kind of bring the average person into that discussion, and help them realize how much is happening out there,” Ruppel said. “Now we know it’s going to be safe. We know it can be successful.”And it could create more opportunities for the general public to experience space. “Their goal is to make that a possibility more for the average person, not the superhuman NASA astronaut,” Ruppel said. Space travel has come a long way, from historical milestones to a possible vacation destination. “When you get into the 1960s and people actually start going into space, there are thoughts about how we might create some kind of place where people could go and visit,” said Jennifer Levasseur, Museum Curator at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. “Fantasies about space hotels or the future of space travel.”She said while more commercial trips are possible in the future, there are some factors to consider. One of those factors is price. “Even a flight on the least expensive means...is really pricey,” Levasseur said. “This is definitely an elite thing.”And then there is safety to consider. “Putting a person on top of that vehicle really complicates that scenario, it ups the risk factor,” she said. “For somebody to just buy a ticket and go there, there needs to be a different level of security with that.” Space Adventures is one of the private companies offering those trips. “Space flight is not a risk-free endeavor,” said Tom Shelley, President of Space Adventures. “We arranged for the very first fair paying private individual flight to space. That was Dennis Tito in 2001,” he explained. They offer a multitude of adventures. They offer suborbital flights that give participants five minutes in space for a price in the six figure category, to flights a couple hundred miles above the earth for multiple days, which costs a prettier penny. “It’s going to remain in the multi-millions, probably in the tens of millions of dollars in the foreseeable future,” Shelley said. “And that’s just to do with the pure physicals of what is involved.” He said as flights become more frequent, prices may come down. But that probably won’t happen anytime soon. “This was a big milestone. It’s been a long time coming. The SpaceX Dragon was conceived originally as a vehicle fair paying individuals would eventually be able to fly on,” Shelley explained. As scientists and visionaries bring us closer to the final frontier, the idea of space tourism still raises a lot of questions. “Every time we’re successful, we build on that confidence that we want people to have in the activities. It’s the same thing that’s happened over years in aviation. And today we are all very comfortable with going and taking a flight anywhere in the world,” Ruppel said.“It’s going to be a little while I think still, until we see legitimate what we think of as space tourism,” Levasseur said.  3549

ROUTT COUNTY, Colo. — Austin Eubanks, who survived the Columbine High School massacre and inspired others to overcome addiction later in life, was found dead at his home in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, overnight, the Routt County Coroner confirmed Saturday afternoon. He was 37 years old. Routt County Coroner Rob Ryg confirmed to KMGH that Eubanks died either late Friday night or early Saturday morning. There were no signs of foul play, Ryg said. An autopsy will be performed Monday morning to determine the cause of death. In a statement, his family said Eubanks "lost the battle with the very disease he fought so hard to help others face. Helping to build a community of support is what meant the most to Austin, and we plan to continue his work. As you can imagine, we are beyond shocked and saddened and request that our privacy is respected at this time." Eubanks was 17 years old when two gunmen entered the library at Columbine High School and killed 10 people inside. Eubanks, who was having lunch with friends in the library, was shot in the hand and knee. 1085

"By the grace of God, He kept me from losing my mind," said Viola Burton as she sat in the lobby of the G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility in Jackson Monday waiting for her son. After 32 agonizing years, Viola's son, Danny, was being released from prison. "I knew in my heart that he couldn't kill nobody," she said.Anxiously waiting with Viola were attorneys Solomon Radner and Madeline Sinkovich from Excolo Law and Claudia Whitman of the National Capital Crime Assistance Network. Fifteen years ago, Danny Burton wrote a letter to Claudia, telling her about his case and that he was innocent. Claudia, who volunteers all of her time to investigate wrongful conviction cases, asked the attorneys to take a look at the case. The law team also investigated, talked to witnesses, and found a prisoner who would eventually sign an affidavit that named the real killers of the 1987 murder of Leonard Ruffin in Detroit."There was a lot of witness intimidation," said attorney Madeline Sinkovich, who added that young witnesses were mistreated by police to get statements. When a tearful Danny Burton walked out of prison, he gave his mother a long embrace. "I'm really shocked," Danny said while appearing to be in a state of disbelief. He wanted to see the rest of his family, but not everyone is still around. Danny's father died years ago from a heart attack. Viola said he just couldn't take the fact that his son was innocent but locked away. Danny's sister passed away last year. Before taking Danny to get some food - he requested McDonald's - his attorney took him to The Suit Depot in Oak Park where owner Marty Babayov, who heard about Danny's case, wanted to give him some new clothes, including suits for court. Danny now wants to help free other men he says are in prison for crimes they didn't commit. "A lot of them can't read or write to seek assistance," Danny said. Friday afternoon, a spokesperson for the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office released the following statement: 2003
