If you get a letter in the mail from the IRS, you might want to open it.In an attempt to track down some Americans who did not receive an economic impact check earlier this year, the IRS said on Thursday it is sending 9 million letters to Americans who do not file a traditional tax return.The letter will encourage recipients of the letter to visit the IRS.gov before an Oct. 15 deadline to register for a stimulus check. For most Americans, the checks are worth ,200.“The IRS continues to work hard to reach people eligible for these payments,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. “These mailings are the latest step by the IRS to reach as many people as possible for these important payments. We are releasing this state-by-state information so that state and local leaders and organizations can better understand the size of this population in their communities and assist them in claiming these important payments. Time is running out to claim a payment before the deadline.”But the IRS says just because you receive a letter does not automatically make you eligible. To be eligible, the IRS requires that an individual is a US citizen or resident alien, have a work-eligible Social Security Number and can’t be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return.Americans who earn less than ,200 a year, or married couples earning less than ,400 a year, are not required to submit a federal tax return. These Americans, if they did not apply for a stimulus check, would have been excluded from receiving a check unless they earn another form of government income, such as Social Security.Those who believe they are eligible for a check don’t have to wait for the letter. In an interview with the Washington Post, FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said that the agency is proposing a ban on menthol cigarettes citing youth and minority smoking rates. According to the New York Times, a ban on menthol cigarettes could take several years to execute. It is a move that other nations have made. Canada has already implemented such a ban, and the European Union's menthol ban goes into effect in 2020. According to the FDA, menthol may reduce the irritation and harshness of smoking. According to FDA statistics, more than half of youth smokers smoke menthols. Also, a disproportionate number of minorities smoke menthols. Studies have also suggested that using menthol makes it more difficult to quit smoking, the FDA says. There have been groups, such as the African American Tobacco Control Leadership Council, that have pushed the federal government to ban menthol cigarettes. The council's co-chair, Phillip Gardiner, told the Washington Post, "I’m sorry it has taken the FDA so long to come around but I’m glad they finally are. They should have done it 10 years ago and saved hundreds of thousands of lives."According to FDA figures, more than 19 million Americans smoke menthols.  1273

In breaking with his administration's top expert on infectious disease, President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he believes that the U.S. is "in a good place" in the COVID-19 pandemic, according to CBS News and CNN.Trump reportedly made the comments in an interview with Greta Van Susteren, the chief political analyst for Gray Television."We've done a good job," Trump said. "I think we are going to be in two, three, four weeks, by the time we next speak, I think we're going to be in very good shape."Trump's comments came a week after Fauci, while testifying at a Senate hearing, called the current trend of rising cases "disturbing" and said he was concerned that some states were "skipping steps" on the process to reopening. In that same hearing, Fauci warned that confirmed cases of COVID-19 could rise to as many as 100,000 a day if current trends continued."Well, I think we are in a good place. I disagree with him," Trump said. "Dr. Fauci said don't wear masks and now he says wear them. And he said numerous things. Don't close off China. Don't ban China. I did it anyway. I didn't listen to my experts and I banned China.
