SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Chronic pain, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and anxiety are just some of the conditions veterans carry with them long after serving our country.Now many are finding relief at a free acupuncture clinic offered at the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine (PCOM)."I had patients who would come to me and say, no you don't understand, I got off all my pain medication," said Christine Cronin, a full-time faculty member at PCOM.A Marine Corps veteran herself, Cronin started the Veterans Clinic in 2013."I focused my doctoral research on the treatment of combat stress-induced insomnia, and I had a lot of research that supported that we were going to have a lot of service members who were going to have a series of comorbid conditions, they were going to have a lot of different things that they were going to be working through. And they were all things acupuncture was good at," said Cronin. Students who've received over 2,000 hours of training help treat veterans at the clinic. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Chicano history will be celebrated in San Diego this week at one of the city's most historic parks.On April 20, the Logan Heights community will celebrate the 49th annual Chicano Park Day at the famed park underneath the Coronado Bridge. The free festival brings together community members annually for art, education, entertainment, and honoring Chicano culture and the park.This year theme will be "Danzantes, Protectors of Our Traditions and Chicano Park, 500 Years of Anti-Colonial Struggle."Performances are scheduled by a lineup of traditional and cultural dance groups and one of the largest Aztec Indigenous dance performances by Danza Azteca Calpulli Mexihca. In addition to dancing, kids art workshops, speakers, and more than 325 classic lowrider cars and bikes will be on display. Attendees can also visit various arts and crafts, and informational booths throughout the colorful park.And, of course, there's the food, which will be sprinkled throughout the park at various booths.The event comes a couple days before the official establishment of Chicano Park on April 22, 1970, by activists. The site was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013 and became a National Historic Landmark in 2016.The park is known for an array of colorful murals lining the Coronado Bay Bridge's legs that make up the Chicano Park Monumental Murals. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- COVID-19 outreach in the Latino community is getting a boost after San Diego County partnered with promotoras to help with contact tracing. Promotoras, which literally means promoters, are bilingual community health workers. The goal is to lower the high number of COVID-19 cases among Latinos in the county. Latinos and Hispanics make up almost 63% of COVID-19 cases in the county, but Latinos make up only 34% of the population.The promotoras are members of the communities where they will be working. The county announced the partnership at the beginning of August and now the promotoras are out in the community helping with contact tracing. The promotoras will work in underserved communities and Latino neighborhoods. ABC 10News spoke to two promotoras working with South Bay Community Services. They are getting ready to start on September 1st. In total, 17 promotoras with the organization will start on that day. They've all received hours of training and are certified contact tracers. The promotoras will have the task of reaching out to the close contacts of positive COVID-19 cases. The contact is made over the phone or via email and text and the promotoras will ask things about testing and if they're presenting any symptoms. The county's partnership also includes promotoras from San Diego State and will include promotoras that speak other languages like Tagalog and Arabic. 1421

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - City leaders say the canyon near the 163 that caught fire Tuesday afternoon was overdue for tree trimming and a homeless flushing.The fire only burned 10 trees but it has many neighbors frustrated that the fire even started in the first place.“That was a pretty big one,” said Councilman Chris Ward on the fire, “we’re pretty scared here in the mid city neighborhoods with the urban canyons which catch fire from time to time.”Ward says he has been trying for over a year to get CalTrans and the City of San Diego to clear out the canyons.Officials have not announced the cause of the fire but it is believe to have been from a cooking fire started by homeless illegally camping.RELATED: Brush fire breaks out near 163“About a generation ago we lost 75 homes in Normal Heights to a canyon fire so this is a real, real danger.” said Ward, “We gotta take this seriously.” 896
