SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A popular Thai restaurant in the College Area has been broken into for the second time in three weeks.At Sala Thai, there are sizzling entrees and simmering frustrations. "Saw the mess on the floor and thought what's going on?" said owner Chira Svangvitaya.A look at the surveillance video gave Svangvitaya the answer. Just before 5:30 Monday morning, a man in a hoodie is seen creeping into through the back door. He heads right to the cash register but finds it empty.He grabs some paperwork, empties the change dish and moments later, he leaves. It isn't for long. "He walked in and out three times, like he's not afraid of anything," said Svangvitaya.Two more trips nets him armfuls of stuff, including a computer, iPad, iPod, checkbooks and a case of soda. Near the end, he takes off his hood - and Svangvitaya's heart sank."I feel so sad and annoying. I don't know what I did to him," said Svangvitaya.The intruder is a stranger to her, but appears to be the same man who broke into the restaurant early Halloween morning. On that occasion, he used a crowbar to mangle the lock and damaged the register while grabbing 0 in cash. He also nabbed five tablets and a computer, crippling her online delivery business.Svangvitaya spent 0 to add a deadbolt after the Halloween break-in. This time, the intruder destroyed the repaired lock and the new deadbolt and went right on in. On the menu now are more costly repairs and a serving of nerves. "I'm scared he will come back," said Svangvitaya. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Ring doorbell video could provide the break in the strange disappearance of rent checks in North Park.A noise caused Ken Frederick to scramble from his home just past midnight Saturday, downstairs to his business, a property management company on 30th Street. He found junk mail - removed from his mailbox - coated with a sticky substance. He ended up near the front door and found a lone check that a tenant had dropped into the overnight mail slot. He checked his surveillance video, which showed a man in a hoodie appearing to jam some sort of stick-like object into the mail slot, before he removes it and takes off."We feel violated, like someone coming into your home," said Frederick.Frederick dug into his other Ring videos and found one from early last Wednesday morning. It appeared to be the same man, same hoodie, and same stick. This time, after he takes the stick out, he appears to put something in his pocket."If you know somebody's been in your business, it makes you feel insecure," said Frederick.Frederick is checking with his tenants to see if any rent checks put in the slot have disappeared. Another property management company nearby tells 10News they have had about ten rent checks vanish since June.As for the sticky substance, it's a familiar one. In the past year, 10News has reported on thieves 'fishing' checks with glue traps out of local postal collection boxes. The ink is then washed off with a chemical solution, allowing a thief to fill in the blanks.Anyone with information on the case is asked to call San Diego Police at 619-531-2000.For renters, experts suggest either looking into online payments or making sure to drop off your rent during business hours. 1725
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A fan was removed from Petco Park Wednesday, after using "foul language" toward a player.As the San Diego Padres took on the Arizona Diamondbacks, the unnamed fan berated a player on the field. The player was Diamondbacks right fielder Adam Jones, according to the Arizona Republic.Upon hearing the fan's language during a play in the fifth inning, Jones spoke with security to remove the fan, the Republic reported.RELATED: After nearly 30 years, Germany's San Diego Padres-themed bar closes"On the street, they’d never do that. In the ballpark when you’ve paid your admission, there’s no need for all that stuff. The second I hear somebody cussing us out, you’re gone. I could care less that they’re gone. That’s just how it is," Jones, who is a native of San Diego, told the Republic. "I made a nice play, and just hearing the B-word, F-word, that’s not baseball talk. So … he gone.”The Padres confirmed a fan was removed, adding the guest code of conduct is verbally stated twice per game."Consistent with our club and MLB policies, a fan was removed from the game yesterday for using foul language toward a player on the field," Craig Hughner, Padres director of communications, said in a statement. The next night, a fan used the same word, reportedly about the national anthem singer, and was permanently banned from the stadium after another fan reported it.Jones told the Republic the Petco Park incident didn't rise to the same severity in language as the Fenway Park event. 2051
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A discrimination lawsuit filed by a former high-ranking employee against UC San Diego has reached a settlement agreement.Jean Ford served as the Associate Vice Chancellor for UC San Diego Health Sciences Advancement. In June 2019, she sued the UC Regents and Chancellor Pradeep Khosla, alleging age and gender discrimination, as well as wrongful termination.Team 10 first reported the lawsuit in June 2019.Ford came to San Diego in 2015 after a decade at Columbia University Medical Center, according to a biography previously on the UC San Diego website.The lawsuit alleged that she was subjected to discrimination and harassment by Chancellor Kholsa because she was a woman over the age of 40, then retaliated against for complaining about illegal conduct. The complaint alleged that Kholsa promoted a younger and less experienced man to supervise Ford.“My client has been a successful fundraiser for 25 years,” said attorney Kristina Larsen last year. “She was recruited to UCSD… and UCSD Health had their most successful fundraising year of almost 0 million under Ms. Ford’s leadership.”The UC Regents recently approved the settlement agreement, although the terms were not disclosed.In a statement, Larsen told Team 10:“Former UCSD Assistant Vice Chancellor Jean Ford, The Regents of the University of California, and UCSD Chancellor Pradeep Khosla have amicably resolved the claims between the parties, with none of the three admitting any wrongdoing.
