SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- There are hundreds of thousands of school employees across the state who won't be in your child’s virtual classroom, but are making sure school operations continue.They are known as classified staff, but you know many of them as teacher aides, bus drivers, and custodians."I myself am a 38-year custodian," said Ben Valdepena.Valdepena is a school district employee and an essential worker."The kids call me Mr. Ben, but throughout the state of California, there's a Mr. Joe, and there's a Mr. George, and that's a title the kids give you," Valdapena said.He's also the head of the California School Employees Association.The union represents about 250,000 classified employees at more than 750 school districts across the state.Many of those workers will be on the job when the school year starts, but in a bit of a different role.Instead of transporting kids to school, Valdeapna says some buses have been transformed into internet providers."They are now becoming WiFi hotspots where they are actually parking their buses in areas in certain school districts to provide WiFi for the kids in the neighborhood,” Valdapena said.In the Sweetwater Union High School District, bus drivers have been assisting with food distribution, processing free and reduced lunch applications, and distributing books and supplies, among other things.The district said it employs about 1,800 classified employees.A spokesperson explained, "Although we are in distance learning, our classified staff continue to support the daily operations of the sites and the district in a variety of ways that include everything from direct support of student learning, maintenance and operations, nutrition services, business services, and several other areas. For example, we have been working with our classified instructional assistants to not only assist students with distance learning, but also with COVID temperature checks for visitors and staff who come to campus, compliance with COVID safe distances, book and supply collection/distribution, responding to parent questions, and contacting students to ensure they can participate to their fullest."A spokesperson for San Diego Unified School District said, "Even though we are opening online Aug. 31, we are still hopeful of getting physically reopened again when it is safe to do so. All school staff is both preparing for that day, while working to provide the best possible online learning experience. Classified employees are no different in this respect."Valdapena said the state budget protected custodial staff, food service workers, and transportation workers, but there are many other roles within schools."Some of our school districts (districts across the state) have decided to forego that and lay off as many classified employees as they can," Valdapena said. "One of our school districts just laid off over 50% of the classified employees."The Poway Unified School District is in the middle of negotiations with its classified union."We're just starting that conversation to really drill in see what that work looks like and how we go about matching up those that are willing with the need of the district," said Courtney Martin, the president of the Poway School Employees Association. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The public is invited to the inaugural Christmas tree lighting ceremony Saturday at the new Legacy International Center in Mission Valley.Dozens of workers made their last-minute touches Friday ahead of the center's tree lighting, which plans to pull out all the holiday stops."We'll have Christmas caroling out there, and Santa will be out there. Just social fun," Jim Penner, executive director of the center, said. Penner said Saturday's event is the first of a three-phase opening for the nearly 0-million hotel, theater, and attraction center opening next year. The center is the brain-child of San Diego-based televangelist Morris Cerullo, who made his fortune as a popular televangelist in the 1980s and 1990s."He [Cerullo] wanted people around the world to be able to experience the people that he got to know through his 70 years of travel to 95 nations in the world," Penner said. Penner told 10News the center was initially supposed to be a small ministry training center and possibly a dormitory. But with the availability of the 18-acre former Mission Valley Resort, they went big. The hotel will have 126 rooms, including 12 suites. The fine-dining restaurant is a steakhouse, which is next to the pool and spa. The attraction building has a domed, 4D theater designed by former Disney Imagineers. Audiences will get to feel like they're flying over Jerusalem in a ride created by the same designers who made Soarin' Over California at Disney California Adventure Park.Another attraction will be an award-winning, computerized dome, where people can digitally tour the world."As we get to know each other, the world gets smaller," Penner said. Before the council approved the blueprints in 2017, critics of the Legacy International Center feared that traffic would be a nightmare. But Penner said that the improvements they made on the roads turned out to have unexpected benefits. "We widened Hotel Circle the entire length of our property. We have 1000 feet of frontage there. And a nice benefit of that is when we had this last big rain last week, in the past, Hotel Circle would flood like crazy in front of the hook ramps here, and no flooding at all!"The inaugural Christmas Tree lighting ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. tomorrow. The deal announced Tuesday is rolling back admission to 2004 prices during the month of September. Tickets are for adults and seniors, and for youth and students. “Midway would not be the 5th most-popular American museum of any type (35,000 museums) if it were not for the nearly 800 San Diegans who donate more than 275,000 hours annually,” said founding president and CEO Mac McLaughlin. “They are the rock stars of Midway and the foundation of its success.” September marks the 74th anniversary of the USS Midway’s commissioning. The retired aircraft carrier opened as a museum in June 2004 after a 12-year campaign. The ship has been host to special events including an SDSU basketball game, an NFL pregame show, and episodes of The Bachelor and American Idol. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Zoo's newest resident is getting the hang of life as a rhino.Edward, the southern white rhino, experienced is first trot around the San Diego Zoo Safari Park's Nikita Kahn Rhino Rescue Center Monday.With his mom, Victoria, leading the way, Edward charged around the enclosure and even fit a mud bath into his busy schedule. It was the first time the mom and calf were released from the center's maternity yard and other off-exhibit areas.RELATED: Birth of baby rhino marks major milestone in effort to save critically endangered species“Victoria has been in the exhibit yard before but this was Edward’s first time,” said Jill Van Kempen, senior keeper at San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “The second they entered the exhibit, Victoria just took off, running laps, and it was so fun to see Edward running right along beside her. He was very energetic, sometimes breathing heavily, and even getting all four feet off the ground at times.”For about 30 minutes, the zoo says Edward and Victoria took advantage of the larger space by running around and stretching their legs.Edward was born 23 days ago, becoming the first southern white rhino calf born via artificial insemination in the country. Edward was born weighing about 148 pounds, but now weighs about 243 pounds.
