GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- A Grand Rapids teen is making sure your morning cup of coffee stays brewing for years to come with the launch of her new coffee line, Joven Coffee."Joven means 'young' in Spanish, so that is why we chose it because we're supporting young farmers," said Frankie Volekma, founder of Joven Coffee. At 14, Frankie is the youngest coffee Q grader in the world and is launching the coffee line to support the next generation of coffee farmers."We're just trying to make it a viable career option for a lot of these young farmers because a lot of times it's a low paying career to be in coffee farming," she said.In coffee producing countries like Columbia and regions of Africa, farmers are primarily 57 years old or older.Frankie's concern is those farmers will eventually retire, and there won't be enough young farmers to take their place."I think it's an important issue, and you're going to hear more about it over time," said Frankie's dad, Tim Volekma, owner of Sparrow Coffee and Schuil Coffee. "I feel like maybe we're one of the first people to sort of bringing it to bring light to this issue."As a young professional in the coffee industry, Frankie says she feels it is her calling to use her talents to support young farmers who may not have the same opportunities she does. She teamed up with young farmers in Columbia and a group of women farmers in Burundi in Africa and created two single-origin varieties under the Joven Coffee name."It's really cool for me to be able to be a part of something that is making an impact on the world," she said, "and even if it just helps a couple of farmers, that really makes me feel great about myself, and that I'm making a difference."Learn more about Joven CoffeeThis story was first reported by Savannah Fish at WXMI in Michigan. 1810

HAWTHORNE (CNS) - A planned launch Saturday by Hawthorne-based SpaceX to deploy 57 internet satellites into orbit has been postponed for a third time to "allow more time for checkouts," the company tweeted. No new launch date was announced, but SpaceX officials said their launch team was working to identify the next earliest launch opportunity. The 10th Starlink mission, part of an effort to provide low-cost internet access, was originally scheduled for June 26 from Cape Canaveral in Florida but was scrubbed at the last minute to allow for more pre-flight equipment checks. SpaceX tried again Wednesday morning, but that launch had to be canceled due to bad weather.Saturday's launch had been set for 7:54 a.m. California time. When it eventually lifts off, the Falcon 9 rocket will carry 57 Starlink internet satellites as part of SpaceX's planned array to provide worldwide low-cost internet access, particularly in underserved areas. This 10th launch will increase the Starlink array to nearly 600 satellites in orbit. It's unclear exactly how many satellites will ultimately be included in the constellation. SpaceX founder Elon Musk has said previously that the service could begin operating when it reaches 1,000 satellites, and the company has already begun soliciting people to be "beta" testers. But the more satellites that are deployed will mean more comprehensive internet coverage. In addition to the 57 Starlink satellites, the SpaceX rocket will also carry a pair of satellites for Spaceflight Industries on behalf of Earth- observation company BlackSky.BlackSky is in the process of building its satellite array, with four already in orbit. The launch will increase the array to six, and the company has an initial goal of launching 16 by early next year. The array could ultimately have as many as 60 satellites, but timing on that expansion hasn't been determined. When the launch occurs, SpaceX will again attempt to recover the first stage of the Falcon 9 rocket by landing it on the company's "Of Course I Still Love You" barge in the Atlantic Ocean. The recovery process is an effort to slash the costs of launches by allowing rockets to be reused. The first stage of the rocket being used for the Starlink mission was used in four previous SpaceX launches, including two Starlink satellite missions. 2329

GENEVA (AP) — The European Union’s Earth observation program says the ozone hole over Antarctica has swelled to its largest size and deepest level in years.Experts at the Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service say a strong, stable and cold polar vortex has driven the expansion, and have called for greater international efforts to ensure countries abide by an international accord to phase out use of ozone-depleting chemicals.Vincent-Henri Peuch, who heads the service, said in a statement that the ozone hole was “definitely” among the largest in the last 15 years.“With the sunlight returning to the South Pole in the last weeks, we saw continued ozone depletion over the area,” Peuch said. “After the unusually small and short-lived ozone hole in 2019, which was driven by special meteorological conditions, we are registering a rather large one again this year, which confirms that we need to continue enforcing the Montreal Protocol banning emissions of ozone depleting chemicals.”Since the ban on halocarbons, officials say the ozone layer has slowly been recovering and data shows a trend in decreasing area of the ozone hole.Ozone depletion over the Antarctic continent was first noticed in 1985. 1217

Grocery stores are preparing for more shortages and two chains have already announced limits on buying some items.Kroger is allowing customers two each of paper towels, toilet paper, disinfecting wipes and hand soap. H-E-B is putting limits on those same things, along with rubbing alcohol, and first aid and cleaning gloves.A supply chain expert tells us the upcoming holidays and a recent surge in COVID-19 cases are adding to demand.Manufacturers are focusing on the most popular products, so less variety may also make it seem like there are more shortages.Months of steady demand has made it tough for retailers to stock up.“There hasn't been really a low season across the board to allow for building up inventory that we can use during the holiday season when we expect a surge in demand,” said Rafay Ishfaq, Associate Professor of Supply Chain Management at Auburn University.Another chain, Stew Leonard's, says it's ordering 20% more stock than usual before the holidays this year. Meanwhile, it's already seen an uptick in panic buying.Customers are looking for cleaning supplies, frozen foods and comfort foods.“I think there was a little unrest over the election and there still is, and people aren't really sure if there's going to be any type of a lockdown in America,” said Stew Leonard's CEO Stew Leonard Jr.In talking to customers, Stew Leonard's says it's found more people are preparing for small Thanksgiving gatherings. So, it's stocking up on smaller turkeys and offering recipes to people who are trying a hand at cooking one for the first time.By anticipating the changes, the chain hopes to keep shelves full through the end of the year. 1670

HOBE SOUND, Florida — For Rony Bottex, 65, fracturing his leg and using crutches is nothing compared to what could have happened on I-95 in Hobe Sound, Florida on Monday morning. "If he wasn't there, if the officer wasn't there, I'd be dead," said Bottex. Rony was involved in an accident on I-95. Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Mithil Patel, 31, was the first to respond and while he's talking to Rony?outside of the car, a van slammed into a car, sending it spinning in their direction.?"He saw the car come right to me and pushed me to the side and thank God I fall, but he's the one who got hurt for me," said Bottex. "He take the hit and pushed me out of the way." Trooper Patel was taken to St. Mary's Medical Center where he is now in good condition. Rony says he has not stopped praying for the brave trooper who he says nearly gave his own life to save Rony. "They do the jobs for you, not for them, and he was going to take the hit for me, he did," he said. Rony says thanks to Trooper Patel, he's still alive for his wife and six children. He now wants this stranger who saved him to be a part of his family too. "What I want to tell his family, I want to be with him as a family because people like this you never forget them," added Bottex. The trooper's father said the family has been overwhelmed with calls and support. Rony says he hopes he can get in touch with the trooper and his family. 1490
