SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Six people were arrested at a Pacific Beach DUI checkpoint Friday night, according to San Diego Police.The checkpoint was held on the 2700 block of Garnet Avenue between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.According to the department, nearly 1,350 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, 845 were screened, seven drivers evaluated, and six arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.“Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public,” the department said. 619

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Zoo visitors are getting their first look at two endangered Amur leopard cubs born at the zoo in April.The unnamed cubs, born April 26, will have their first veterinary exam this week which will reveal the sex of the cubs."The cubs are climbing up on the rocks, they are getting into the trees, sometimes listening to mom and sometimes not," said Kelly Murphy, senior wildlife care specialist, San Diego Zoo. "Their personalities are still developing, and I’m looking forward to see what they become."The cubs' mother, Satka, has ventured out with the newborns daily and is already showing her kids how to stalk and climb, the zoo says. The animals are being raised in the park's Africa Rocks leopard habitat.Amur leopards are the rarest of the big cat species on Earth. There are fewer than 100 Amur leopards believed to exist in the habitats of Russia and China. The species has been decimated in the wild due to loss of habitat and poaching for their thick coats. 1003

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's top Democratic candidates for mayor squared off on the debate stage Friday. The big theme of the night was housing and homelessness, and Assemblymember Todd Gloria, Councilmember Barbara Bry, and community activist Tasha Williamson came prepared with answers."I will move homeless services to the offices of the mayor, currently it's outsourced to the housing administration, it sends a message its not a priority for this mayor or this City Hall," Gloria said.Gloria put the onus on himself if elected to solve homelessness, while Bry had a more collaborative approach, wanting to pressure the county for more help."I believe it is much more effective to send social workers out with iPads to talk to homeless individuals where they are, to send out social workers, not police officers," Bry said.But the biggest applause lines of the night came from political outsider Williamson, who pushed her platform for police oversight."We have been criminalized all our lives and the time is up, the time is now, we are going to stop it, we are going to be a sweeping sea of change when we talk about police accountability, rogue officers do not belong here, they will have too look for another job somewhere else," Williamson said.But it was the scooter issue that brought out the biggest punches."A few days ago I talked to [the San Diegan] who's wife is in critical condition at UCSD with skull fractures and severe bleeding after falling off a scooter, I was in tears after talking with him," Bry started. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Several North County residents felt their homes and businesses rattle briefly after a loud boom Friday.The noise and shaking were reported at about 1:30 p.m., according to San Diego Sheriff's Department. Deputies in the North County received calls from Vista about the noise. 10News also fielded several calls from Oceanside and San Marcos over the incident.USGS did not register any major earthquakes in the region Friday, according to the agency's website. At about 1:31 p.m., USGS recorded a 1.6-magnitude earthquake with a depth of about 5 miles in the Ocotillo Wells area, about 100 miles east of Oceanside.Camp Pendleton was scheduled to perform exercises involving mortar fire and high explosive munitions, according to a noise advisory statement, and finish its Exercise Iron Fist training alongside Japanese armed forces on base Friday. However, a spokesperson for Camp Pendleton told 10News the base was on normal operations Friday.The base's website advises that, "depending on atmospheric conditions, the sound of the explosions may be amplified and heard up to 50 miles away."
