BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo said here Thursday that the country would push forward friendly relations with the Islamic world.Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), made the remarks when meeting with the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) Secretary-General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu.Wu said China and all Islamic countries, as developing nations, enjoyed a long history of bilateral exchanges.China has always valued the traditional friendship with Islamic nations, Wu said, expressing appreciation for those countries' firm support on issues concerning China's core interests.China also has always supported Islamic nations on issues related to their concerns, and would work with them to increase exchanges and cooperation in politics, economy, trade and culture, he noted.Wu also briefed Ihsanoglu on China's national and religious policies and on the social and economic situation of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.Ihsanoglu said friendly exchanges between the Islamic world and China not only accorded with fundamental interests of all parties, but also promoted human progress.The OIC was opposed to terrorism, separatism and extremism in any form, Ihsanoglu said, noting that the Islamic world would work with China to carry forward the traditional friendship and increase exchanges and cooperation.Besides Beijing, Ihsanoglu and his delegation would also visit the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and Xinjiang.

BEIJING, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- China and Nepal celebrated the 55th anniversary of diplomatic ties at a reception in Beijing Monday evening.More than 300 guests, including Chinese government officials and foreign diplomats in China, attended the reception, which was co-hosted by the China-Nepal Friendship Association, the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC), and Nepalese embassy in China.Chen Haosu, president of the CPAFFC, said in a speech that the years since China and Nepal forged diplomatic ties had witnessed continuous development of their traditional friendship and friendly cooperation as well as frequent high-level exchanges.Political, economic, trade and cultural relations were closer than ever, Chen said.Guests attend a reception co-hosted by the China-Nepal Friendship Association, the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC), and Nepalese embassy in China in Beijing, Aug. 2, 2010. BEIJING, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said Sunday that China encouraged women employed in science and technology to contribute more to the country's modernization, social progress and the rejuvenation of the Chinese people.Xi made the remarks in his address at the opening ceremony of the 4th General Assembly and International Conference of the Third World Organization for Women in Science (TWOWS), which opened in Beijing on Sunday.Established in 1989, the TWOWS is the first international forum bringing together women scientists from the South with the objective of strengthening their role in the development process and promoting their representation in scientific and technological leadership.In implementing the programs for mid- and long-term scientific and technological development, as well as human resource development, China would work to build a large, high-quality force of women working in science and technology, Xi said.As the world's largest developing country, China maintains to its basic state policy of promoting gender equality and attaches importance to creating more opportunities for the fostering and career development of Chinese women in science, he said,"Two-fifths of China's 35 million scientific and technologic personnel,and one-third of those personnel in senior professional ranks, are women," Xi noted.

GUANGZHOU, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- A man who had allegedly shot dead four people including two traffic policemen last month in south China's Guangdong province went on trial on Monday.The trial opened at an intermediate people's court in Jieyang City, where the suspect is charged with killing the two traffic police officers on July 5.Hu Yihua, the suspect, 29, was involved in two murder cases, police said.He robbed and shot dead a couple at a cinema parking lot in Yiwu City, Zhejiang province, at midnight July 3, and then fled to Guangdong in the victims' Lexus sedan. He disguised the car license plate and then discarded it.While sleeping in the sedan at a highway service zone on July 5, Hu was cornered by two traffic policemen on patrol duty in Jieyang as the car was without a license plate. He shot them dead and fled to Fujian, where he was nabbed on July 8 after more than one thousand police personnel were mobilized in the search for him.The sedan that Hu had stolen, a loaded pistol and identity cards of the slain police officers were found in Hu's possession.The court did not say when it would rule on the case.

BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- China's foreign exchange regulator said Thursday it will strengthen monitoring of cross-border capital flows to reduce risk.The regulator will keep a close watch on the economic and financial situation home and abroad this year, the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE) said in its annual report on management of foreign exchange posted on its website.It will also enhance its monitoring of abnormal cross-border capital flows by cracking down on illegal private banks and internet-based speculation in foreign exchange.The SAFE will maintain a prudent approach to managing foreign currency reserves and will continue to improve its diversification strategy.China's balance of payments continue to expand, albeit slowly, despite the impact of the global financial crisis.At the end of 2009, China's foreign exchange reserves hit 2.4 trillion U.S. dollars, a 453 billion U.S. dollar increase from the end of 2008.China had gold reserves of 1,054 tonnes at the end of last year, the fifth largest in the world.Although gold has commodity and monetary properties, the global gold market is relatively small and illiquid, the report noted, adding that because of its volatile price and high cost of holding and trading, gold has limited utility in asset allocation.
