YICHUAN, Henan, April 6 (Xinhua) -- The death toll after a central China mine blast last week has risen to 40,with 6 still missing, local authorities said on Tuesday. An official with the rescue headquarters confirmed Tuesday that 98 people were working underground in the Guomin coal mine in Yichuan county when the blast occurred at 7:20 p.m. on March 31. 57 were lifted to the ground unharmed, 35 were killed and six are still missing. The explosion also killed five and injured one on the ground, the official said. The illegal coal mine owned by village head Wang Guozheng was poorly managed and even does not have a payroll list. That's why the dead and missing could not be identified, the official said.Ten people allegedly accountable for the accident are under control by police, including mine owner Wang Guozheng, who was previously given a reprieved imprisonment sentence in 2009 for covering up a mine accident.Work safety authorities ordered the mine to suspend operations after a gas outburst on May 1, 2009. Production ever since has been illegal, said a statement from the Henan Provincial Administration of Work Safety.
BEIJING, June 2 (Xinhua) -- China opposes the U.S. decision to set final duties of up to more than 200 percent on imports of steel gratings from China, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said in a statement Wednesday. This came after the U.S. Commerce Department Tuesday announced final anti-dumping duties of 136.76 to 145.18 percent on the gratings to "offset below-market pricing." It also set a countervailing duty of 62.46 percent.MOC said the United States had acted "discriminatorily" in the anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigation and made the wrong conclusion, and China is dissatisfied and is opposed to this.Such move could hurt the interests of China, which both Chinese government and enterprises would not accept, the ministry said.China urged the U.S. to take effective measures to correct the mistake, it said.According to the U.S. trade remedy procedure, the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) will also make its final injury determination about the product soon.If the ITC makes affirmative final determinations that imports of steel gratings from China materially injure, or threaten material injury to, the domestic industry, the Commerce Department will issue anti-dumping duties and countervailing duties orders. In 2009, the United States imposed a series of trade remedy measures on Chinese products, and the value involved was eight times more than that in 2008, the MOC statement said."Such action not only hurts the interests of China, but also has an adverse impact on bilateral economic and trade ties," it said.China hoped the United States could show restraint in using trade remedy measures and act to fight trade protectionism, it said.
BEIJING, May 3 -- Ma Weihua, president and chief executive officer of China Merchants Bank (CMB), said he wanted to see Chinese banks elevate their level of globalization in the context of expedited overseas expansion of Chinese companies during his bank's recent road show in the United States. He said CMB would pursue this process ambitiously but cautiously. The bank is soon to relocate its night-shift foreign exchange trading team to its New York branch, which was established in 2008, and will move on to security trading as well in the future, according to Ma during a group interview. The branch is also working on consolidating its dollar settlement business."What I'm concerned about right now is to first have my New York branch familiarized with the US market, customers and rules as soon as possible so I can expand the business steadily," Ma told the audience at a recent speech at New York University's Leonard N. Stern School of Business. "We won't consider faster expansion until we have secured our position here."Because of policy restrictions, CMB and other Chinese banks are only able to provide very limited services overseas for now. Retail banking, which CMB is best at, is still being constrained in its New York branch, its first branch in the West. But the bank is eyeing up other opportunities. The branch is attaching increasing importance to the loan business for Chinese companies during their overseas merger and acquisition activities. It just completed a big deal for a Chinese State-owned conglomerate but declined to reveal its name."The most fundamental motive to globalize our bank is to support Chinese companies' overseas growth and to provide the same quality service for foreign companies as well when they come to China," Ma said.According to Ma, over the past five years, Chinese companies' overseas direct investment saw an annual increase of 60 percent and their non-financial overseas investment grew by 68.5 percent year-on-year.In comparison, overseas assets only make up less than 4 percent of Chinese banks' total assets, while in large banks in Europe and the US, the proportion is about 40 percent, he said.
BEIJING, May 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met with Kim Jong Il, general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and chairman of the National Defense Commission of the Democratic People' s Republic of Korea (DPRK) during Kim' s unofficial visit to China.Wen said he received warm welcome from the DPRK party, government and people during his visit to the DPRK last October, and the joint celebration of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of China-DPRK diplomatic ties left him good impression.Currently, China and the DPRK are witnessing active exchanges and cooperation in various fields and Kim' s visit will definitely help further deepen traditional friendship between the two parties, countries and peoples, Wen said.Wen said China will, as always, support the DPRK for developing economy and improving people' s livelihood and is willing to introduce to the DPRK the experience of China' s reform and opening-up and construction.China and the DPRK enjoy big potential for developing economic and trade cooperation, said Wen, urging the two sides to make joint efforts to advance major cooperative projects, quicken the infrastructure construction in border areas and explore new cooperative fields and methods so as to benefit the two peoples, said Wen.Recalling Premier Wen' s successful visit to the DPRK last year, Kim said the DPRK-China cooperation in such areas as trade, agriculture, science and technology is of great significance for promoting bilateral traditional relationship. The DPRK will work with China to enhance communication and coordination to make pragmatic cooperation in various fields between the two countries to score more significant achievements. At the invitation of Hu Jintao, general secretary of the Communist party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Chinese president, Kim paid an unofficial visit to China from May 3 to 7.
BOAO, Hainan, April 10 (Xinhua) -- World politicians and entrepreneurs attending the annual Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) Saturday called to prevent trade protectionism from posing a real threat to the fragile global economic recovery. The worst financial crisis since 1930s plunged the world economy into downturn last year, the first time since the Second World War. But many economies are recovering at unexpectedly quicker rates as massive fiscal stimulus has paid off.The world economy was in a recovery, but the global demand was still worryingly weak, Yi Xiaozhun, China's deputy commerce minister, said at the BFA meeting in Boao in south China's island province of Hainan. Many signs also showed a rise of trade protectionism as more and more countries took protectionist measures, Yi said.Former Chinese Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan said the once strong support for international cooperation appeared to be eroding as the financial crisis subsides, which is "even more worrying."Some nations were verbally against protectionism, but they in fact imposed anti-dumping or anti-subsidy measures and made a fuss about exchange rate problems, Zeng wrote in the BFA official publication.Up to 250 anti-dumping complaints were raised last year, 20 percent more than a year earlier, and 41 anti-subsidies complaints, up 193 percent year-on-year, according to the World Trade Organization (WTO).China has become the biggest victim of trade protectionism, according to the U.K.-based Center for Economic Policy Research. A total of 61 trading partners had taken 160 trade protectionist measures against the world's third-largest economy between November 2008 and January 2010, Further 111 protectionist measures are in the pipeline. But China organized buying sprees to Europe and the United States amid the financial crisis, quite a stark contrast to the rising trade protectionism.Furthermore, China posted 7.24 billion U.S. dollars of trade deficit in March, the first monthly deficit in six years, the General Administration of Customs said Saturday.Long Yongtu, BFA's secretary-general, told Xinhua that the post-crisis period needed more unity and cooperation, but trade protectionism damaged the basis for unity and sent a wrong signal.Victor Fung, Chairman of the International Chamber of Commerce, said that if the countries resort to protectionism, the economic recovery, already weak due to relatively high unemployment, would be further left in peril. The Group of 20 would continue to stay vigilant against trade protectionism as the global economy faced uncertainties on the road to recovery with high unemployment rate this year, according to a WTO report released in early March.Fung said most importantly nation leaders should be told not to abuse protectionism and to avoid trade frictions."The global economy would record solid recovery if no more protectionist measures were taken in the coming 12 months," he said. The promotion of Doha round of trade talks, stalled for years over differences in agricultural and services sectors, was an effective tool to curb all kinds of protectionism, Fung said."Free trade is very important to global economic recovery," said Yi. He added that the Doha round, if completed, would help create a large number of jobs and guarantee global economic recovery.Goh Chok Tong, Senior Minister and former Prime Minister of Singapore, also called to guard against trade protectionism under the green and environmental protection labels. The developed countries should help developing countries to upgrade technology rather than abusing protectionism, Goh said."We should work together to resist all kinds of trade protectionism, otherwise there will be no economic recovery and growth," Yi said. The three-day conference, under the theme of "Green Recovery: Asia's Realistic Choice for Sustainable Growth," will conclude on Sunday. The forum is committed to promoting regional economic integration and bringing Asian countries even closer to their development goals. It attracted around 2,000 political and business heavyweights and experts from Asia and around the world.
