BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo said here Thursday that the country would push forward friendly relations with the Islamic world.Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), made the remarks when meeting with the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) Secretary-General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu.Wu said China and all Islamic countries, as developing nations, enjoyed a long history of bilateral exchanges.China has always valued the traditional friendship with Islamic nations, Wu said, expressing appreciation for those countries' firm support on issues concerning China's core interests.China also has always supported Islamic nations on issues related to their concerns, and would work with them to increase exchanges and cooperation in politics, economy, trade and culture, he noted.Wu also briefed Ihsanoglu on China's national and religious policies and on the social and economic situation of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.Ihsanoglu said friendly exchanges between the Islamic world and China not only accorded with fundamental interests of all parties, but also promoted human progress.The OIC was opposed to terrorism, separatism and extremism in any form, Ihsanoglu said, noting that the Islamic world would work with China to carry forward the traditional friendship and increase exchanges and cooperation.Besides Beijing, Ihsanoglu and his delegation would also visit the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and Xinjiang.

BEIJING, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- More relief supplies, worth 20 million yuan (2.94 million U.S. dollars), have been sent from China to flood-hit Pakistan, China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said in a statement Wednesday.The shipments mainly contained urgently-needed daily necessities, including grain, cooking oil, flour, sugar, salt and medicine, the ministry said in a brief notice on its website.The supplies are to be transported through a land route to the Sust dry port near the Pakistan-China border from Kashgar in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the statement said.However, the ministry did not say when the supplies would arrive, as workers were still rushing to repair the road linking Kashgar and Khunjerab Pass.China is one of the first countries to respond to the relief needs of Pakistan when it was hit by the worst floods in 81 years. China's first delivery of aid, worth 10 million yuan, was delivered on Aug. 4. She was the smartest kid in the family and the best in her class. BEIJING, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Rain-triggered floods left 273 people dead and 218 missing since rainstorms struck south China on July 1, latest figures from the Ministry of Civil Affairs show; up from the 146 deaths reported on July 16.As of 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, about 58 million people in 11 provinces and Chongqing Municipality had been affected by the floods, with 3 million being evacuated and resettled, according to a statement released Wednesday by the ministry.A total of 330,000 homes and some 4 million hectares of crops have also been destroyed.Also, economic losses were estimated at about 58.27 billion yuan (8.53 billion U.S. dollars), the statement said.Additionally on Wednesday, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Civil Affairs earmarked 329 million yuan for disaster relief in the flood-hit provinces of Sichuan, Shaanxi, Jiangxi and Hubei and the municipality of Chongqing.The funds will be used for the evacuation and resettlement efforts, reconstruction and death gratuities, said the statement.The previous relief funds of 370 million yuan was allocated to the provinces of Anhui, Hubei, Hunan, Guizhou and Yunnan, and Chongqing Municipality on July 16.Also on Wednesday, the Organization Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee allocated 5.5 million yuan "special membership fees" for disaster relief in the provinces of Hubei, Anhui, Zhejiang, Yunnan and the municipality of Chongqing.Earlier Wednesday, the Chinese government revealed that torrential rains and floods, the worst in a decade, have claimed the lives of 701 people and left 347 missing in China since the beginning of the year.Liu Ning, vice minister of Water Resources, warned that floods, mud-flooding and landslides would likely continue to plague some areas in Hainan, Guangdong, and Guangxi with landfall of a severe tropical storm, named Chanthu, on Thursday.

CHENGDU, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers Sunday reopened a key road leading to a mudslide-hit county in southwest China's Sichuan Province, which local officials called an important step in speeding up relief and rescue efforts.Traffic resumed on National Highway 213, linking the provincial capital Chengdu to Wenchuan County, on Sunday afternoon after emergency crews worked for nine days to clear the mudslide sludge and debris on the highway.On August 13, mudslides struck parts of Wenchuan, cutting a section of the highway after torrential downpours pelted the Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of Aba.At least 15 people have been killed and 31 remain missing, according to the latest available government figures.Wenchuan was the epicenter of the 8.0-magnitude earthquake that jolted Sichuan and neighboring provinces in May 2008. The quake left some 87,000 people dead or missing.Heavy precipitation is particularly dangerous in terrains once shaken by earthquakes, which then become more vulnerable to geological disasters, said Hao Liping, the head of the provincial meteorological bureau.
