The Olmsted Locks and Dam project, located on the Ohio River between Illinois and Kentucky, has taken 30 years and billion to complete.  But after three decades, the project is slated to be operational in October. The engineers and workers behind the development say the investment is worth it."The Ohio flows into the Mississippi 16 miles downriver from us, and then it's open passage all the way down to New Orleans and into the ocean,” explains Mick Awbreyk, the Army Corps of Engineers deputy chief for the Olmsted Division. “There is no locks and dams from the Olmsted to the ocean."He says the innovative details that went into the project are “phenomenal and truly world class.”Awbreyk will see the opening of the project, which began in 1988.So, why has it taken so long to complete?“The nature of the project; a lot of different things have led to the duration,” explains Awbreyk of the timeline. “One: it hasn't been fully funded until calendar 2013, fiscal years 2014 and that’s the nature of civil works projects."The dam crosses one of the busiest shipping lanes in the United States. Awbreyk says about 91 million tons of goods on average come through the area per year.“The equivalent of 25,000 semi-trucks worth of cargo passes through this site every year,” says Awbreyk. “You can imagine the wear and tear on the interstates and the highways that would have an extra 25,000 vehicles that will be on there per day."The project's price tag has grown to around billion. Workers here say it's money Americans will see come back to them."It’s widely important. The return on investment on this particular project is 0 million per year to the nation,” says Awbreyk. “That’s a net number, so ultimately it’s a little under a billion price tag; it will pay for itself in five years.” 1817

The jarring noises and machines inside the Usheco plastics warehouse sound like home to the Schaeffer family.“My grandfather, Bernarr Schaeffer, started the business in ’61. So, proud to be third generation,” said Alethea Shuman, who will one day take over the company for her father. The company started with the World War II fighter pilot, and now, more than 60 years later, nearly every member of his family has worked inside these four walls.“It’s like having your own team. There’s an extra level of trust that you just don’t get elsewhere,” said Wayne Schaeffer, Bernarr’s son and the President of Usheco. They build all kinds of plastic devices. The company is known for air purifying planters, handicapped equipment, and laboratory supplies.“Our business was really founded on my grandfather wanting to make health-related products,” said Shuman. Now, this family is seeing a huge boom in some new products. At the start of the pandemic when everything shut down, Usheco had to lay off much of their staff because business dropped by about 40 percent. However, they designed face shields and desk barriers and had to bring everyone back on and hire extra workers on just to fulfill all their orders.“We only cut everyone’s hours for one week," said Shuman. "The following week, we were back to full-time hours for everyone."Hundreds of thousands of face shields and plastic desk barriers in custom shapes and sizes are coming out of this factory. While most businesses are in need of help themselves, the plastics industry is one of few seeing pandemic profits.“Things are looking pretty good for us,” said Schaeffer. “How can you not be thrilled to be helping out and making your business grow?”The Schaeffers say their U.S. made products are growing to a global scale. “Our pricing is similar to China now,” said Wayne.“We’re seeing new quotes coming in for things that are typically done overseas and were grateful to be able to help with that,” said Shuman.Shuman said by the time she takes over the business, she hopes the products keeping her grandfather’s legacy alive are no longer in stock.“I’m hoping we figure out a way to get past this and we’re not going to need PPE and sneeze guards, and the business coming back to the U.S. is going to support us. And from what I can see, that’s happening,” she said. But more important than business, is carrying on a tradition.“Over the last few months, we really have understood where our roots are and where we’re going,” she said.Towards a future where simple, plastic products mean more than ever before. 2571

The pandemic is requiring social distancing from friends and family, leaving many craving physical contact with those they care about. A woman in New Jersey has a clever solution: shower curtains.Melissa Molnar reportedly created a so-called “hug wall” from plastic shower curtains with two arm holes on each side to allow people to embrace.Molnar’s children haven’t been able to hug their grandmother since the pandemic started, so she created the hug wall to celebrate a recent birthday."It's been so hard for everybody in the world, and it was refreshing to be able to hug my parents and see their reactions, and see my children's reactions who have been asking for months when this going to be over,” Molnar told News 12. 733

The Oxford University Press, which oversees various dictionaries including the Oxford English Dictionary, has updated their definition of “woman” and “man.”"We have expanded the dictionary coverage of 'woman' with more examples and idiomatic phrases which depict women in a positive and active manner," according to a statement from OUP. "We have ensured that offensive synonyms or senses are clearly labelled as such and only included where we have evidence of real world usage."For example, one of the definitions of “woman” now refers to a “person’s wife, girlfriend, or female lover,” and does not include language tying them to a man.In addition, the definition of “man” and “woman” were updated to include gender-neutral terms and references to “sexual attractiveness or activity.”The changes come after a 2019 Change.org petition that called for OUP to remove “sexist” terms for a woman. The petition cited examples from OUP based on the Oxford English Dictionary’s definition: “I told you to be home when I get home, little woman” and also “Ms September will embody the professional, intelligent yet sexy career woman.”The petition also noted there were 25 examples listed for “man” and only 5 listed for “woman.”OUP told CNN their lexicographers are reviewing examples in his dictionaries to make sure they are more representative. Some synonyms were removed, like “wench”, others were kept but have a label added noting the terms are offensive, derogatory or dated. The definition of “housework” was also updated to remove gender; instead of “she still does all the housework,” an example was changed to “I was busy doing housework when the doorbell rang.” 1673

The Navajo Nation is a sprawling part of the country, where Americans face challenges that many may find hard to believe exist in the United States.“The unemployment rate is 50-60 percent," said Ethel Branch, who has experienced those challenges firsthand.Branch was born and raised on the Navajo Nation.“I grew up on a ranch. We didn’t have running water or electricity," she said. The Navajo Nation is the largest Native American reservation in the United States. The reservation is roughly the size of West Virginia and reaches into Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. The novel coronavirus has hit this area as hard as anywhere in the country. The virus is spreading uncontrollably in 75 communities on the reservation, according to the Navajo Department of Health.“The magnitude of need in our communities is significant," Branch said. She has been trying to meet that need since March with what started with a GoFundMe page."Early on, we were thinking really small, you know, like let’s help like five families for two weeks and hope that the pandemic is contained within two weeks," she explained. But as the pandemic went from weeks to months, The Navajo Hopi Families COVID-19 Relief Fund grew to so much more.“I would say we’ve raised about .5 million at this point," Branch said. They've now established a non-profit called Yee Ha'ólníi Doo, where people can donate and learn more about efforts to help people on the reservation during the pandemic. The money pays for a variety of necessities, including PPE, cleaning supplies, boxes of food that can feed a family of four for two week and materials to keep people informed on the virus. Additionally, it will provide water in a place where it can be a luxury, especially right now."A third of our communities of Navajo and Hopi don’t have running water, and so, asking people to wash their hands frequently is asking them to make a decision between drinking water and water to feed their animals and water to wash their hands with," Branch said.Branch says they’ve helped 48,000 Navajo and Hopi households so far, but at a cost of 0,000 a week, the millions they’ve raised is not enough.“We have enough to get to the end of December, and I think we’re making headway and we’re getting through the first part of January," she said. They hope to raise an additional more than million to keep their operation going through the end of the pandemic as numbers on the reservation rise, in both cases and deaths. While challenges are nothing new to Navajo and Hopi people, neither is a spirit of fighting beyond them.Branch went from growing up on that ranch without water or electricity to graduating from Harvard and becoming the Navajo Nation’s Attorney General from 2015 to 2019.Now, as this pandemic poses a new challenge, Branch is fighting to make sure her community makes it through. If you’re interested in contributing to the fund, click here. 2911
