(KGTV) — A man has died after firefighters found him inside a North County home where a fire had ignited Sunday afternoon.Escondido Police said the fire was reported in the 600 block of Waverly Place just before 11:30 a.m. When firefighters and police officers arrived, heavy smoke and flames were seen coming from the home.Firefighters entered the home to battle the flames and found an adult man unresponsive inside. The man was taken to Palomar Medical Center where he later died, police said. His name has not been publicly released, pending notification of his family.The cause of the fire and the man's death is under investigation, police say. Election season may be over, but two weeks after polls have closed, campaign signs still fill yards and roadways in much of the country.It's not uncommon to see political signs stand for a year after Election Day. And while the placards create plenty of visual litter, what's more concerning is the physical litter they can cause.Judith Enck, the President of Beyond Plastics says candidates need to take responsibility for their political signs."Lots of people who run for office run more than once," she said. "If they were in a two-year term, they're going to need signs in another two years, so they really should go out and collect the signs and store them somewhere and reuse them."Enck also says that because a candidate's campaign is already responsible for putting up the signs, they should also be responsible for taking them down after the election.She adds that most campaign signs aren't recyclable. While most signs used to be made entirely of cardboard, newer signs often now include a plastic coating. The coating protects the ink from sun, rain and snow, but also means candidates can't recycle signs after the election.Enck argues that in most cases, the plastic coating on a cardboard campaign is unnecessary."They pop up like mushrooms in the month of October, so I'm not sure that all that plastic coating is necessary," she said. "I would recommend to just go back to regular cardboard, and then you could actually recycle the signs."Enck adds that the metal posts that hold up campaign signs can be recycled, but they need to be separated from the signs and taken to scrap metal recycling centers. 1628

(KGTV) - A new technology is being hailed as a "game changer" by some experts as it takes aims at those achy, tiresome commutes.  Cadillac's Super Cruise, the only hands-free semi-autonomous driving feature on the highways, is now on roads in Southern California.Once on the highway, the feature is activated with the push of a button on the steering wheel.  The feature allows the driver to go feet- and hands-free as long as you stay in one lane. "If someone slows down in front of me, it will slow down our speed," said Drew Doran.While other driver-assistance systems use cameras to center a car, Doran says General Motors has extensive laser mapping of US highways that leads to better accuracy."It actually knows what is ahead of the vehicle," said Doran.  On a one-hour-long drive, it tracked every curve and every time, it stayed in the center of the lane. The driver is still expected to be on standby.  A camera on the steering wheel watches for distractions.  If the driver is doing something like reading and blocking that camera, it will warn the driver.When we blocked the camera, a green light flashed - the first of several alerts - before Super Cruise disengaged.  Doran says he recently went on a trip to Los Angeles with his wife.  He says he used Super Cruise for about 80 percent of a drive that left him feeling relaxed.    "Not the usual back pain. Every year around this time, Marta Valenzuela Moreno puts together an altar to remember family members who have passed.“I have here to present my traditional family altar of Day of the Dead,” Valenzuela Moreno said.It’s part of her tradition for el Día de los Muertos. In English, Day of the Dead.Day of the Dead is recognized on November 2. Ann Macca runs the Day of the Dead program in her community.“El Día de los Muertos is an ancient holiday," Macca said. "It comes from Aztec traditions where way back hundreds of years ago, they would celebrate for a whole month in the summer, and they would honor their deceased loved ones. And when the Catholic church showed up in Mexico, they brought with them all their holidays and traditions. And so when the Catholic church met the Aztec traditions, they came together and Day of the Dead was born.”Families of Mexican and Guatemalan descent create an altar for their ancestors. They thoughtfully arrange photos of their loved ones who have passed and surrounding the photos, they place their relative’s favorite foods, along with other items that honor what they loved and did while on Earth.Even though they happen around the same time, el Día de los Muertos should not be confused with Halloween.“Day of the Dead is a celebration of joy and welcoming where Halloween -- all of those skeletons, ghosts and ghouls -- those are spirits that you want to scare away," Macca said. "So, Halloween those are scary things, but in Day of the Dead, they’re your friends and your family and you want to see them and bring them back.”“I can talk to them, sing to them and argue with them,” Valenzuela Moreno said.Valenzuela Moreno says she feels a full range of emotions as she spends time with her mother, brothers and sisters who have passed.“Sadness, happiness, rejoice... there are times to pray, to cry, because memories come back of all of them.”Memories we have of relatives and the passion that emerges from them are things we all have in common. Macca says that’s likely the reason why the holiday has now entered mainstream culture.“I think a lot of people who don’t come from a latinx tradition who don’t have Mexican or Guatemalan heritage are now starting to embrace day of the dead because it’s such a wonderful way to remember your loved ones,” Macca said.Valenzuela Moreno says she welcomes any and all cultures to adopt the tradition she holds near and dear to her heart.“The community needs to embrace this kind of celebration and feel part of it. And not be ashamed or scared.”Valenzuela Moreno says she hopes future generations in her family will continue building an altar every year on Día de los Muertos, so she too can visit when her time comes to fly away. 2728
