The Japanese side illegally seized the Chinese trawler and fishermen, and continued to illegally hold the Chinese captain despite firm protests by the Chinese side.Wang warned China will take strong counter measures if the Japanese side fails to release the Chinese captain immediately and unconditionally."Japan shall bear all the consequences that arise," he noted.Sources with the Foreign Ministry said earlier Sunday China had already suspended bilateral exchanges at and above the provincial or ministerial levels, halted contact with Japan on the issues of increasing civil flights and expanding aviation rights between the two countries.A bilateral meeting on coal has also been postponed.In the mean time, the number of Chinese citizens traveling to Japan as tourists has already declined.

JILIN, Jilin, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- A fire that broke out in a northeast China shopping mall lasted 12 hours, leaving at least 19 people dead and 27 injured in the country's worst fire since 2009, government officials said Saturday.The deadly fire sounded an alarm to fire departments throughout the country just four days before national Fire Prevention Day, and has prompted a nationwide campaign to stamp out fire threats during this dry and windy winter season.The mall rescue operation ended at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, nearly 24 hours after the fire broke out at Jilin Commercial Building on Hunchun Road, Jilin City, Jilin Province, Liu Qizhi, a spokesman with the municipal government told reporters. Further, Liu said that 24 of the 27 injured remain hospitalized, but their conditions are stable.On Saturday, officials expressed relief about news that over 80 older women who were trapped in the blaze managed to escape unharmed.Zhang Liying, one of the women, said they were participating in their usual morning dancing group on the mall's fifth floor when the fire broke out."We saw flames and thick black smoke surge from downstairs. We called the firemen, told them where we were, and then climbed out of the window to the balcony, one by one," Zhang said.After being rescued, some of the women tearfully hugged each other following their near-death escape.Businesses started to reopen in the shopping area on Hunchun Road on Saturday night, while insurance company workers and store owners began assessing their losses.Currently, work crews continue combing the ruins of the five-story shopping mall, built in 1987, to determine the cause of the fire. BEIJING, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- Fire has been put out at the scene of a July 16 blast involving two oil pipelines in Dalian, a port city in northeast China's Liaoning Province, by 2 a.m. Monday, the contingency headquarter said.The contingency headquarter said no crude oil has been found spilled over into the sea, and no ocean pollution has been detected.The fire was caused by the remaining oil in a tank which had been emptied before workers tried to remove it at 4:10 p.m.. BEIJING, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- China and the European Union (EU) are forging a reliable partnership as one's stability, growth and prosperity are in the interests of the other, said an EU envoy on Thursday.Serge Abou, EU Ambassador to China, made the remarks before Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao attends the eighth Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM8) and the 13th China-EU summit from Oct. 4 to 6. The ASEM summit, under the theme "Quality of Life: Achieving Greater Well-being and More Dignity for all Citizens," will focus on global finance and economic governance, sustainable development, and social and cultural exchange between Asia and Europe.China, as the second largest economy in the world, plays an important role in the meetings, Abou said, adding that the growth of Chinese economy contributed much to the world, especially amid the financial crisis.Abou described the relationship between China and the EU as "maturing partnership," with trade as "the first taproot" of the ties.The 27-member EU is China's biggest trade partner while China is the EU's second-largest trade partner and most important source of imports. WASHINGTON, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- China's growth is projected to average 10.5 percent in 2010 and 9.6 percent in 2011, driven by domestic demand, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said in a report Wednesday.The Washington-based international lending agency made the projection for the annual fall meetings this weekend of the 187-nation IMF and its sister lending organization, the World Bank."The slight moderation in recent activity is expected to continue through 2011 in light of tighter quantitative limits on credit growth, measures to cool off the property market and limit bank exposure to this, and the planned unwinding of fiscal stimulus in 2011," the IMF said in its report.The report said this year's sustained growth in retail sales and industrial production confirms that private sector activity has advanced beyond the lift from government stimulus."On average over 2010-11, private domestic demand is poised to contribute two-thirds of near term growth, and government activity about one third, whereas the contribution from net exports will be close to zero," the report said.Despite the robustness in domestic demand, the pickup in inflation in 2010 reflected mainly higher food prices rather than core inflation, the report said.The report said China's increasingly wide trading network is driving growth in numerous economies, especially commodity exporters.The report said Asia's medium-term growth depends on the rebalancing of drivers of growth -- greater reliance should be put on domestic markets instead of foreign demand.The report said such a rebalancing in China, the world's second largest economy, is critical to enhance the role of household consumption in domestic growth.The report also recommended that China implement reforms to health care, education, and pension systems to enhance the social safety net.
