Spencer Davis, bandleader of the self-titled group that reeled off such hits as "Gimme Some Lovin'" and "I'm a Man," has died at the age of 81.Davis died Monday while being treated for pneumonia in a hospital, Rolling Stone reported.Steve Winwood, who served as lead singer of the Spencer Davis Group, called Davis "an early pioneer of the British folk scene" in a statement released Tuesday and said Davis was "like a big brother" to him."He was definitely a man with a vision and one of the pioneers of the British invasion of America in the sixties," Winwood said.Founded in Birmingham, England, in 1963, Davis teamed with Winwood, his bass-playing brother, Muff Winwood, and drummer Pete York to form the quartet.The band's first No. 1 single, "Keep On Running," was released in 1965.In the next two years, the Spencer Davis Group followed with another pair of hits -- "Gimme Some Lovin'" and "I'm a Man," both of which cracked the top 10 on the U.S. charts."Gimme Some Lovin'" has been featured in several popular movies, including "The Big Chill," "Days of Thunder" and "Striptease."In recent years, the band is arguably known for its trick trivia question, "Who was the lead singer of the Spencer Davis Group?"Winwood eventually left the band to form Traffic in 1967, but the Spencer Davis Group carried on without him, though with far less success. ST LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. — They’re not giving up until they get answers.On Wednesday, glioblastoma patients and families who have had loved ones with the deadly brain cancer in St. Lucie County, met with officials from the Florida Department of Health in St. Lucie County.READ MORE: St. Lucie County Glioblastoma CoverageIt was their first time meeting together since the health department revealed there is not a high number of glioblastoma cases in the county.That was determined after a five-week review of the state’s cancer registry from 1996 to 2015. The research focused on looking at the demographics of the area to determine how many new cases are to be expected each year in the county.Health officials determined St. Lucie County should see an average of 10 cases per year.The registry does not, however, have data yet for 2016 or 2017.Scripps station WPTV in West Palm Beach collected information from viewers who have glioblastoma or know of someone with glioblastoma in St. Lucie County to help provide some data for those two years.For now, 2016 appears to have at least 15 cases diagnosed in St. Lucie County, according to WPTV.  In 2017, it appears there were 11 cases from people who came forward with their information.The information is not medically verified, but has been given to the department of health in St. Lucie County by WPTV’s Meghan McRoberts to further investigate.The Health department said though the 2016 and 2017 numbers might be higher than the average of 10 cases, there is not a set formula for what number would be considered ’too high'. It would take further research.People like Lenny Schelin, Jr. who are battling glioblastoma, were glad to hear the health department is still going to look into the local glioblastoma cases, regardless of the state data showing there is not a high local rate of the cancer.“There’s still a lot of unknowns,” Schelin, Jr. said. He said he knows the number from the state’s cancer registry has some potential flaws. For example, it does not account for people who lived in St. Lucie County but were diagnosed with glioblastoma out of state.“Too many people moved. Too many people get diagnosed somewhere else. Just too many variables,” Schelin, Jr. said.The Florida Department of Health in St. Lucie County Administrator Clint Sperber, also noted the information from the state’s cancer registry does not look at specific addresses to evaluate exactly how close together the patients live.That’s an issue to Kim Hart, whose mother is battling the disease.“Finding out a younger person is going through it a mile from us… it’s unfair,” Hart said. Other patients’ families said some cases are on the same block and street.Kevin Perry, Jr.’s dad is also battling GBM.“They’re not here. They’re not looking at, 'Oh, five people within a small little area.' They’re just looking at numbers,” Perry, Jr. said.But that’s where the local health department can step in and take a closer look at the proximity of the cases.The glioblastoma of St. Lucie County support group is also committed to doing its own research to have the best possible chance of getting answers.“We have a lot more work to do,” Hart said.“It’s terrifying. I wonder if I’m sitting around waiting for something to happen to me or someone close to me or anybody in this area, like, if something’s causing it, I’m just very adamant that they need to figure it out,” Perry Jr. said. 3449

Several Kentucky teachers won't be going to work Friday after the state legislature approved changes to their pension on Thursday.Educators, who are furious over the pension issue, called out of work in protest. At least nine counties have canceled school, the Kentucky Democrats tweeted early Friday. Little ones, like paying a credit card bill a day late, may cost you a penalty fee, but that’s a relatively minor irritation — it’s not going to stand between you and a mortgage. Other seemingly small slip-ups can lead to full-fledged disasters.What makes a credit mistake haunt you?Some things can be reversed quickly. Running up credit card bills can tank your credit score, for instance, because the portion of your credit limits you’re usingis weighed heavily in credit scoring. But when you pay down the debt, the damage disappears as lower balances get reported to the three major credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.Mistakes that have long-running ripple effects hurt the most, says credit expert John Ulzheimer. A late payment, for example, can get sent to a collection agency, then perhaps grow into a repossession or bankruptcy. Those batter your credit and stay on your credit record for years. Likewise, co-signing a loan for someone who is later unable to pay can hamstring your finances for a long time.Common mistakes that can hurt your financesMissing a payment: A payment that’s a little late might cost you a penalty fee, but your credit score won’t suffer because creditors can’t report your account as delinquent until it’s 30 days past due. If you have a high score, going 30 days late can knock as much as 100 points off your score — and it stays on your credit report for seven years. The damage gets worse if you let the account slide to 60 days past due, 90 days past due or more. Your score can recover, but it will take time. Catching up on that account, and keeping all other payments up to date and balances low, can help.Raiding retirement funds to pay debt: Most people don’t want to file for bankruptcy. Almost half of Americans say they would not file no matter how much credit card debt they had, according to a recent study commissioned by NerdWallet. Bankruptcy attorney Roderick H. Martin of Marietta, Georgia, says some of his clients have tapped — or even emptied — retirement savings in a desperate attempt to stay afloat. That often just delays the inevitable — “then they turn around and file for bankruptcy,” he says. Through April 2021, you can get a free credit report weekly from the three major credit bureaus by using AnnualCreditReport.com. Plan to check at least annually, and more often is better.Ignoring the details: Not knowing your credit cards’ interest rates or when a 0% interest rate ends can cost you.Knowing interest rates can tell you which card to use when you’re paying for a new transmission and need to carry that balance for a while, for instance. Knowing when a teaser rate ends can help you ensure you’ve paid off the balance by then. It’s important to read the fine print. Some cards — primarily store cards — charge deferred interest if there is still a balance at the end of the introductory period.
