BEIJING, April 13 (Xinhua) -- China's top economic planner said late Tuesday it would raise prices of gasoline and diesel both by 320 yuan (46.88 U.S. dollars) per tonne from April 14.This comes as the first such move in nearly five months since it raised gasoline and diesel prices both by 480 yuan per tonne in November 2009.The benchmark price of gasoline will be 7420 yuan per tonne and diesel 6680 yuan per tonne, according to the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).The price rises translate into mark-ups of 0.24 yuan and 0.27 yuan per liter, the measurement used at service stations in China. Photo taken in the wee hours on April 14, 2010 shows the price board at a gas station in Shenyang, northeast China's Liaoning Province. Taxi drivers would also get a temporary subsidy.

PYONGYANG, May 9 (Xinhua) -- The Rodong Sinmun, a leading newspaper of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), hailed the recent successful visit to China by top leader Kim Jong Il in an editorial published Sunday.The editorial said that the people of the DPRK are "very glad and excited" about the visit. It is a "meaningful opportunity" to strengthen the friendship between the two parties and the leaders of the two countries.The article also indicated that the DPRK will make efforts to further strengthen the traditional DPRK-China friendship.Both countries shared the view that peace, stability and prosperity of the Korean Peninsula are in the common interests of the two countries and other Northeastern Asian nations, the editorial said.The two sides will make joint efforts to achieve the objective of denuclearizing the Peninsula on the basis of the Sept. 19 Joint Statement, it added.The editorial also said that the people of the DPRK sincerely wish the Chinese people still greater achievements in their socialist construction and the cause for national reunification.Kim Jong Il made an unofficial visit to China from May 3 to 7. He has visited China for five times since 2000.

ASTANA, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Defense ministers of China and Kazakhstan agreed Friday to upgrade cooperation of the two militaries to a new level.At a meeting with his Kazakh counterpart, Adilbek Dzhaksybekov, visiting Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie recalled the smooth growth of the bilateral cooperative relationship since the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Kazakhstan, including frequent top-level exchanges, deepening of political trust, and expansion of cooperation in all aspects.He recalled frequent meetings between Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Kazakh counterpart, Nursultan Nazarbayev. The two leaders held in-depth discussions on how to further bilateral strategic partnership, thus continuously adding new momentum and providing guidance to the development of bilateral ties.Liang said military-to-military relationship is a key part of overall bilateral relations. Supported by leaders of both nations, relations between the two militaries have been growing steadily while leaders of both militaries have maintained frequent contacts on bilateral and multilateral occasions. XIANGNING, Shanxi, April 8 (Xinhua) -- The death toll at the flooded Wangjialing Coal Mine in north China's Shanxi Province had risen to 20 as of 8:20 p.m. Thursday while 18 miners are still unaccounted for, rescue authorities said.Three more bodies were recovered late Thursday after five were found earlier in the day.As of late Thursday, about 240,000 cubic meters of water had been pumped out, much more than the presumed 130,000 cubic meters, said Liu Dezheng, spokesman of the rescue operation, late Thursday.Seven of nine working sections had been ruled out for the existence of survivors and the targeted areas were narrowed to two sections, he said.Rescue operations were resumed after a short suspension because suspected leakage from an adjacent abandoned mine prompted flooding fears and an evacuation of the rescuers.Hundreds of rescuers evacuated when the shaft ceiling began to leak Thursday morning, said Liu Dezheng.The leakage had stopped by Thursday afternoon.Some survivors telephoned their family Thursday morning, and the family members would been organized to visit them, said Hong Yu, deputy manager of China National Coal Group Corp., who owns the flooded mine.All victims would be compensated, Hong added.A total of 261 miners were working below ground when the mine flooded on March 28. Some 108 miners escaped unharmed while 153 were trapped underground.On Monday, 115 miners were brought out of the mine alive after being trapped for more than a week.

BEIJING, April 19 (Xinhua) -- As of 8:00 a.m. Monday local time, there had been 1,206 aftershocks following the 7.1 magnitude earthquake in Yushu, according to statistics from the China Earthquake Administration.Among the aftershocks, 12 were above 3 magnitude, one between 6.0 and 6.9 magnitude, three between 4.0 and 4.9 magnitude and eight between 3.0 and 3.9 magnitude.There has been no more aftershocks above 3 magnitude since a 3.6 tremor occurred at 7:00 a.m. April 17.The 7.1 magnitude quake, which jolted the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu on April 14, had left at least 1,706 dead, 256 missing and 12,128 injured, as of 10 a.m. Sunday.
