A routine trip to Walmart turned into a nightmare for a Maryland woman, but now she is using her negative experience to help others. Cynthia Morales and her boyfriend Linwood Boyd, who are both blind, were at the self-checkout lane at the Walmart in Owings Mills, Maryland in late July 2017 when they asked an employee for help. While the self-serve kiosks do issue some spoken prompts, it was still a challenge for Morales and Boyd to check out. A Walmart employee helped the pair finish their transaction, but unbeknownst to Morales and Boyd, they requested in cashback, which the employee pocketed. Because no audio prompt gave them a total of their transaction, the couple had no idea this happened until the machine told them to take the cash. Unable to check their receipt, the couple asked someone outside of the store to read them it and discovered they had been charged the extra . The money was returned, but Morales and Boyd decided to shop at another nearby Walmart from then on. Because of their experience at the Walmart, they are teaming up with Melissa Sheeder — another blind Marylander — the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) and the National Federation of the Blind Maryland to sue Walmart under the Americans with Disabilities Act. “What happened to Cindy Morales is an extreme example of what can occur when companies like Walmart deploy inaccessible self-checkout or point-of-sale technology,” said Mark Riccobono, President of the National Federation of the Blind. “The real problem is that Walmart has decided to treat blind customers differently from sighted customers. Walmart’s refusal to deploy readily available technology to give blind shoppers the same choice sighted shoppers have — whether to check ourselves out or visit a cashier —makes us second-class customers. That is unlawful and unacceptable.”The lawsuit is asking for the Maryland federal district court to order Walmart to make its self-service checkout kiosks fully accessible to blind shoppers. A Tennessee man was arrested after watching ISIS videos, and then lying about his stay at a mental institution when he tried to buy a sniper rifle, according to federal officials.According to a federal indictment, federal agents began looking into Khari Malik Whitehead last year, after they talked to someone who knew him. That person told Metro Nashville Police they were concerned Whitehead was watching ISIS propaganda videos on the internet.They also told the ATF Whitehead may have possibly been radicalized, and that they were afraid that he may commit a mass murder one day.The indictment said Whitehead was committed to a mental institution late last year, but he lied about that in February on a background check form he filled out at the Walmart in La Vergne as he tried to buy a semi-automatic rifle. He asked to purchase a rifle that could "hold a lot of bullets"However, the purchase didn't go through. His stay at the mental institution was picked up by the background check, and Whitehead was denied the purchase.Whitehead's lie on the background check form was enough for federal prosecutors to file charges against him. 1175

A veteran NBC News producer who worked with Ronan Farrow on Farrow's explosive story on disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein has left the network and is speaking out, calling the network's decision not to make the story public "a massive breach of journalistic integrity."Rich McHugh, who left NBC News' investigative unit recently, said in a statement provided to CNN that the orders not to run the story came from "the highest levels of NBC. That was unethical.""At a critical juncture in our reporting on Harvey Weinstein, as we were about to interview a woman with a credible allegation of rape against him, I was told not to do the interview and ordered to stand down, thus effectively killing the story," McHugh said in the statement.An NBC News spokesperson said in a statement that "the assertion that NBC News tried to kill the Weinstein story while Ronan Farrow was at NBC News, or even more ludicrously, after he left NBC News, is an outright lie.""In August of 2017, after NBC News assigned Ronan Farrow to investigate Weinstein and supported his reporting efforts for eight months, Farrow believed his reporting was ready for air. NBC disagreed because, unfortunately, he did not yet have a single victim of -- or witness to -- misconduct by Weinstein who was willing to be identified," the statement said. "Dissatisfied with that decision, Farrow chose to leave for a print outlet that he said was willing to publish immediately. A van covered in conservative political bumper stickers parked nearby where a suspect was arrested in connection with a series of package bombs sent to liberal politicians and donors was taken into police custody Friday.The van was plastered with large stickers in support of President Trump. It also included a sticker of Hillary Clinton in a sniper's crosshairs and a "CNN Sucks!" sticker.Police covered the van in a tarp and drove it to a nearby facility.It's unclear if the van belongs to Cesar Sayoc, the man arrested in connection with the package bombs, though it was located in a parking lot of the same auto parts store in which Sayoc was arrested.At least 12 package bombs were sent to liberal politicians and donors this week. A nurse in Illinois is no longer employed after posting on social media about running over protesters amid massive unrest gripping the country.According to WMBD-TV, the nurse is longer associated with OSF HealthCare after making “insensitive comments” on social media. It’s unclear if she was fired or quit on her own accord.“As previously shared, a Facebook comment made by one of our Mission Partners did not align with our values,” a spokesperson for OSF HealthCare told WMBD on Friday. “That person was immediately suspended, and as of today, is no longer with our organization. Words and actions that seek to marginalize or harm others have no place within our Ministry.The post read, “If I’m driving down the road with my horse trailer behind me. No matter who you are. If you’re in the road ‘protesting’ I will run you over. I will not stop. I will not brake. I will not hesitate.
