SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who went on a South Bay crime spree that included shooting at a moving vehicle and ramming an occupied San Diego police vehicle during a pursuit was sentenced Thursday to 19 years in state prison.Alfonso Ayala Flores, 26, pleaded guilty earlier this year to charges of assault with a semi-automatic firearm and resisting arrest for a series of crimes last November that culminated in him driving toward officers who cornered him in a cul-de-sac and ramming a patrol car.One officer opened fire on the pickup truck Flores was driving, striking the truck, but not Flores.He was also given a separate 16-month sentence for an unrelated burglary case, but that term will be served concurrently with his 19-year prison term.The spree began with Flores carjacking a motorist's Ford F-150 pickup at the Frontier Motel in San Ysidro on Nov. 6. Deputy District Attorney Mary Naoom said that on the following day, Flores shot at an occupied vehicle.Two days later, he sped off when San Diego police spotted him driving the stolen truck in the 1900 block of Dairy Mart Road in San Ysidro. The suspect, who had a female companion in the truck with him, fled west, where he wound up at the end of a cul-de-sac in the Nestor neighborhood.As officers got out of their cars and shouted at him to halt, Flores made a U-turn and accelerated toward them, prompting one of the officers to open fire, police and prosecutors said.Naoom said Flores rammed the patrol car with the pickup as he sped away, with police again in pursuit. The subsequent chase ended in the 1200 block of Holly Avenue in Imperial Beach, where he pulled over and ran off along with the woman, according to Sainz.His companion was quickly apprehended and questioned by police before being released. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Citing the potential risks of sexual and physical abuse to children, San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan today urged Gov. Gavin Newsom to consider allowing county school districts to make their own determinations regarding reopening in advance of a Tuesday decision that could send the county to the most restrictive tier of the state's coronavirus reopening roadmap.In a letter sent Monday to Newsom, Stephan said there has been ``a drastic increase in child predatory behavior on the internet'' with children out of school and teachers unable to ``be the eyes and ears of law enforcement'' to report suspected abuse among their students.Local reports to the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force have tripled since schools were shuttered due to the pandemic, and that similar increases have been seen nationwide, Stephan said. Stephan also said domestic violence reports have increased since stay- at-home orders were issued, and that Rady Children's Hospital has seen an increase in ``consult cases,'' in which cases of suspected child abuse are reported by physicians.Stephan's letter was sent in advance of Newsom's Tuesday decision regarding San Diego County's COVID-19 category status, when the county could potentially slide into the ``Purple Tier,'' meaning many schools could not open for in-person learning.``When evaluating the health of our children and our community, we must consider the effects of COVID-19, but also acknowledge and weigh the other real and potentially more life-threatening threat from violence and exploitation of children,'' Stephan said.``This is the public safety lens that I sincerely hope you will consider.'' SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Military officials today identified the San Diego-based Marine at the center of a search in the seas southeast of the Philippines that was called off earlier this week.Cpl. Jonathan Currier, with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit stationed at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in San Diego's North County, was reported overboard at 9:40 a.m. Thursday while the USS Essex was conducting routine operations in the Sulu Sea.Currier was declared dead on Aug. 17, 13th MEU Capt. Diann Rosenfield said. "Our hearts go out to the Currier family," said Col. Chandler Nelms, commanding officer, 13th MEU. "Cpl. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman was seriously injured when she crossed into the path of an oncoming car in Linda Vista, police said Saturday.A 72-year-old woman had just gotten off a bus at a stop on Linda Vista Road near Tait Street around 5:20 p.m., according to San Diego Police Officer Robert Heims. She walked to a marked crosswalk and began to walk across the street against the signal, Heims said.At the same time, the driver of an approaching Toyota did not stop for the pedestrian and hit her, Heims said.Paramedics were dispatched and the pedestrian was taken to a hospital. She suffered extensive head injuries, Heims said.Police don't believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. 700

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man waiting for an Uber was stabbed in San Diego Sunday morning, according to San Diego police.At 2:08 a.m., a 37 year-old male was waiting for his Uber ride on the corner of 8th Avenue and B Street when he was approached by two female suspects and a male suspect, all in their 20s. The victim began talking to one of the women when she reached into his pocket and stole his cellphone. The suspects ran away and the victim chased them. After he caught up with them, the male suspect turned and jabbed the victim in the right arm.The victim began to bleed and witnessed the three suspects running away and getting into a red Chevy Camaro that fled westbound on B Street.
