PASCO COUNTY, Fla. — Drivers continue to share stories of scary moments and narrow escapes as there are more reports of Kia Souls catching fire.New complaints led I-Team Investigator Jackie Callaway to ask why some vehicles weren't included in the automaker's past recalls for engine fire risks.Brek Badgley says his 2015 Kia Soul burst into flames while rolling down I-75 northbound in Hernando County last December. He said the fire gutted the entire vehicle within minutes.“Just tossed my phone out of the window and started throwing stuff out of the car,” Badgley said.In April 2019, Kia recalled nearly 380,000 Kia Souls made between 2012 and 2016 over a defect that they say could cause a fire. We checked Brek’s VIN and found his Soul wasn't included in that recall.The I-Team discovered not every Soul made during those years was taken off the road. Kia says that's because even within the same model year, vehicles can have different equipment.Shelly Parks' 2015 Kia Soul was among those not recalled. Parks says it caught fire as she drove near Columbus, Ohio, last summer."We hear someone yell fire, and by the time we had noticed anything, there was fire coming from underneath the car," Parks said.She told the I-Team the car was still rolling to a stop when both she and her friend jumped out.“I watched the car roll past me on fire."The I-Team also found 2018 Kia Souls catching fire, according to three reports filed with federal regulators. Kia reports these Soul fires are rare and can be caused by any number of factors not related to engine defects.In August, 34-year-old Jordan Carlton died of his injuries a year after his rented 2019 Kia Soul went up in flames as he drove down a Hawaiian highway. Philonise Floyd, a brother of George Floyd, challenged Congress to "stop the pain" during an appearance at a House Judiciary hearing on policing practices.During his opening statement, Philonise Floyd recalled watching the bystander video of his brother's arrest — the video that shows a police officer kneeling on his neck for more than eight minutes. George Floyd later died in police custody."I can't tell you the kind of pain you feel when you watch something like that. When you watch your big brother, who you looked up to your whole entire life die, die begging for his mom?" Philonise Floyd said. "I'm tired. I'm tired of pain. Pain you feel when you watch something like that."Police originally took George Floyd into custody for allegedly using a countefeit bill to buy to but tobacco at a Minneapolis convenience store."He didn't deserve to die over ," Philonise Floyd said. "I'm asking you, is that what a black man's worth? Twenty dollars? This is 2020. Enough is enough."He added that he hoped his brother's death would not be in vain."Please listen to the call I'm making to you now. To the calls of our family and the calls ringing out the streets across the world," Philonise Floyd said. "People of all backgrounds, genders and races have come together to demand change. Honor them. Honor George and make the necessary changes that make law enforcement the solution and not the problem."Floyd is one of about a dozen witnesses to testify during the hearing Wednesday. He'll be joined by Floyd family attorney Benjamin Crump. Other civil rights and activist leaders are also expected to testify.Also expected to testify are Dan Bongino — a former Secret Service agent and ally of President Donald Trump — and other supporters of current police practices, according to ABC News.The hearing comes a day after George Floyd was buried in Houston as largely peaceful demonstrations continue in his name in dozens of major cities across the country. Floyd died in police custody on Memorial Day after bystander video showed a police officer, Derek Chauvin kneeling on his neck for more than eight minutes. Four officers face charges in connection with Floyd's death, including Chauvin, who faces a second-degree murder charge.The hearing also comes after Democrats introduced the Justice in Policing Act — a bill that proposes several changes to policing practices in the wake of Floyd's death. PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico -- An explosion that tore through a ferry in Playa del Carmen injured 25 people Wednesday, according to KABC. None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening in the explosion that took place as passengers were unloading.Local officials said 20 Mexicans, three Canadians and two Americans were all reportedly in good condition.The municipal government said victims sustained minor cuts and were treated at a local hospital. The explosion left a hole in the vessel’s starboard side beside a passenger seating area.The cause of the explosion is unknown at this time. 611

Papa John's is breaking up with the NFL.The pizza chain, which last year blamed slumping sales on the NFL's handling of player protests, is ending its sponsorship of the league."While the NFL remains an important channel for us, we have determined that there are better ways to reach and activate this audience," CEO Steve Ritchie said a conference call to discuss the company's quarterly earnings.Papa John's has been a league sponsor since 2010. It will keep its partnerships with 22 of the individual teams.Last fall, then-CEO John Schnatter received heavy criticism after he said Papa John's sales were hurt by the NFL's handling of protests by players who knelt during the National Anthem."This should have been nipped in the bud a year and a half ago," Schnatter told investors at the time. "The controversy is polarizing the customer, polarizing the country."The company later apologized."The statements made on our earnings call were describing the factors that impact our business and we sincerely apologize to anyone that thought they were divisive," it said on Twitter. "That definitely was not our intention."Schnatter left the company at the end of the year.Ritchie said the parting was mutual. The NFL did not immediately respond to a request for comment.Papa John's reported Tuesday that North American sales were down 3.9% from a year ago. Paul Manafort's former son-in-law has reached a plea agreement with the US attorney's office in Los Angeles, which has been investigating Jeffrey Yohai's real estate deals for over a year, according to two sources familiar with the matter.Under the plea agreement Yohai will be required to cooperate with other investigators but one source told CNN it is unlikely he has much to offer to special counsel Robert Mueller.It's not clear what Yohai will be pleading to as part of the deal. He has not been publicly charged by prosecutors, though he has been under investigation.His guilty plea is all about his real estate Ponzi scheme -- he defrauded actor Dustin Hoffman, among others. Yohai will also have to cooperate with an investigation by the New York Attorney General's Office, which has an open investigation into Manafort. That probe is in the shadows of Mueller's investigation.Reuters first reported the plea deal had been reached.Yohai met with Department of Justice investigators in New York in the summer of 2017, according to two other sources familiar with the matter.Yohai provided information and documents to federal investigators in New York at the time, according to one of the sources.Yohai's lawyer did not immediately return a request for comment.The sources say the Justice Department was seeking cooperation related to the federal investigation into Manafort for possible money laundering or tax violations in his business dealings with pro-Russia political parties in Ukraine.The information was turned over to Mueller as part of his probe.
