SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Parents of Californians murdered by people now on death row shared gruesome details of their loved ones' killings Thursday as they launched a statewide tour to urge Gov. Gavin Newsom to reverse his moratorium on executions."He was like a thief in the night that stole justice from us," said Phyllis Loya, whose son Larry Lasater Jr. was killed on duty as a police officer.Newsom last month issued a reprieve to the more than 700 people sitting on California's death row, meaning none will be executed as long as he is in office. He also ordered the state to withdraw its lethal injection regulations and dismantled the "death chamber" at San Quentin State Prison.California's death row is the nation's largest, but the state has not executed anyone since 2006. Right after the mass shooting at a Florida high school earlier this year, Dick's Sporting Goods decided to stop selling assault-style weapons at its stores.Now the nation's largest sporting goods retailer is going to destroy those guns."We are in the process of destroying all firearms and accessories that are no longer for sale as a result of our February 28th policy change," the company told CNN."We are destroying the firearms in accordance with federal guidelines and regulations."A company spokesman wouldn't say how the guns would be destroyed.Dick's was one of a number of retailers that made changes to their gun sales policy after the February 14 massacre at Marjory Stonemen High School that killed 17 students and staff.Around the same time, Walmart said it would also raise the age restriction for purchase of firearms and ammunition to 21. The figure is 45 percent higher than five years ago.Health officials are particularly concerned by the hike because 30 women had stillbirths due to congenital syphilis, the highest number since 1995.STDs can cause serious health problems if untreated. Syphilis can cause permanent loss of hearing, vision and neurological issues. Chlamydia and gonorrhea can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility, ectopic pregnancy and chronic pelvic pain."STDs are preventable by consistently using condoms, and many STDs can be cured with antibiotics," said CDPH Director and State Public Health Officer Dr. Karen Smith. "Regular testing and treatment are very important for people who are sexually active, even for people who have no symptoms. Most people infected with an STD do not know it."Chlamydia and gonorrhea rates are highest among people under age 30, health officials said. (AP) — California's attorney general is accusing a car dealership of false advertising and lying on loan documents to boost the company's profits at the expense of its mostly low-income customers.Attorney General Xavier Becerra sued Paul Blanco's Good Car Company on Monday.Becerra said the company's prolific TV and radio ads would boast about 2% interest rates and approving people for loans over the phone. But Becerra said those were lies designed to lure customers to the dealership. Once people came, Becerra said the company would then lie about their incomes and the value of the vehicles to convince lenders to approve the loans.Representatives from the dealership did not respond to a request for comment. Robert Davis, 70, faces criminal charges after he was caught in South Florida allegedly using a device that concealed his license plate while driving past toll stations, WPLG-TV reported. For the last 18 months, social media users have been posting videos of a Chrysler van driving past toll stations with a concealed license plate. Until last week, Florida Highway Patrol was unable to find the van. But on Saturday, an off-duty Florida Highway Patrol officer finally spotted the van near Homestead, Fla. "I kind of realized that is the guy and I had to call it in," Lieutenant Alejandro Camacho told WPLG. "And then troopers came and stopped him and made an arrest. "Florida Highway Patrol officials allege that Davis used a remote control that drops a cover over the license plate to conceal the license plate. It is unclear how many times Davis allegedly used the device. Davis was arrested on charges of organized fraud, cheating and petty theft, WPLG said.  1006
