SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California is "getting closer" to issuing guidance on how and when to reopen theme parks across the state during the coronavirus pandemic.Wednesday, Gov. Gavin Newsom said the state is still working on preparing guidance on when and how theme parks across the state can reopen while fighting the spread of COVID-19.“We will make determinations in real-time for theme parks, amusement parks, and the like,” Newsom said. “There’s still many areas where we are open-ended in terms of our negotiation, making progress, and advancing in the same space.”Newsom added the state is “getting closer to concluding when and how to safely reopen those sectors.”Legoland California, Disneyland and California Adventure, Knott’s Berry Farm, Six Flags Magic Mountain, and Universal Studios Hollywood have each been shuttered since mid-March after stay-at-home orders were issued for the state.Downtown Disney and Universal CityWalk have reopened outside their respective theme parks with modifications.SeaWorld San Diego reopened last month on a limited basis, requiring reservations for visitors and limited access to exhibits. All of the park's coasters and rides are currently closed and some animal experiences are limited. The San Diego Zoo and Safari Park have also reopened in San Diego with limited offerings and modifications. 1346

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - County animal shelters are helping San Diegans "fall in love" for free this season.San Diego County Animal Services (SDDAC) will waive adoption fees for cats at their three shelters this weekend, Friday, Sept. 22 through Sunday, Sept. 24, as part of their "Fall in Love" event.RELATED: Adoption fees lowered as San Diego shelter makes more room for hurricane-impacted animalsCats have been spayed or neutered, have their current vaccinations and flea control, are microchipped, and come with a free veterinary exam in the first 10 days, according to SDDAC.The county's three shelters are open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday; Adoptions close at 4:30 p.m.RELATED: 'Hurricane Harvey' dogs flown to San Diego from Louisiana up for adoptionAnyone can stop in prior to the promotion to check out cats in person or visit animals service's website to see available cats. The county's three shelters are located at: 967

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As the unofficial start of summer came and went, one thing that many San Diegans were without was the use of community pools.Reopening community and apartment pools is listed in San Diego County's pilot program to phase into California's Stage 3 of reopening early. The county has submitted a letter petitioning the state to be allowed to enter the pilot program, but has yet to hear back.RELATED: Is it safe to swim in pools this summer amid COVID-19? CDC offers guidanceWhile Memorial Day weekend say many Americans looking to cool off, the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention offered new guidance on community pools. The agency says currently, "there is no evidence that the virus that causes COVID-19 can be spread to people through the water in pools, hot tubs, spas, or water play areas. Proper operation and maintenance (including disinfection with chlorine and bromine) of these facilities should inactivate the virus in the water."But for San Diego County, health officials are leaning on the state for the go ahead on pools. Sarah Sweeney, communications officer with the county's Health & Human Services Agency, says the risks go beyond pool chemicals.RELATED: Gov. Newsom: Reopening guidelines for California gyms, fitness businesses coming soon"In the case of pools, it’s not the water that’s the concern. It’s the gathering of individuals across different households for extended periods," says Sweeney. The county's public health orders allow for water activity in the ocean, bays, and lakes. But health officials says it's unlikely that large groups will swim together in the ocean and people aren't expected to wear facial coverings while engaged in active water sports. 1722
