NEW YORK — Businessman and former presidential candidate Andrew Yang has filed papers to enter the already crowded Democratic field in the race for mayor of New York City in 2021. Yang filed papers with the New York City Campaign Finance Board Wednesday to join the race. Yang, a CNN commentator following his run for president, now arguably has the highest national profile of any of the candidates. The former ambassador for global entrepreneurship under President Barack Obama has not officially announced his run. Yang grew up in Westchester County, went to law school at Columbia and began his legal career in New York City. The NYC CFB said that Yang is joining the city’s -to- matching funds program. You can find out how that works here. The field in the Democratic primary is already awash with candidates with profiles both local and nationwide. Soon-to-be former Congressman Max Rose, City Comptroller Scott Stringer, Brooklyn Borough President Erik Adams, former national HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan, Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia, Citigroup executive Raymond McGuire, City Councilmember Carlos Menchaca and former counsel to Mayor Bill De Blasio Maya Wiley are just some of the candidates who have declared on the Democratic side. NEW YORK – A New York City police officer was among the several people arrested in connection to a drug trafficking bust, officials announced Monday.NYPD officer Amaury Abreu and two other men, Julia Bautista and Gustavo Valerio, are accused of conspiring to import and distribute cocaine. The three men were allegedly members of a multinational drug trafficking organization with distributors in the New York area and the Dominican Republic between January 2016 and October 2020.Bautista, 35, and Valerio, 38, were high-ranking members of the organization based in New York and were responsible for distributing and overseeing the distribution of cocaine once it was in New York, according to the federal complaint.Abreu, 34, allegedly used his position as a police officer and provided information about law enforcement procedures, performing warrant checks on DTO members, on at least one instance, distributed cocaine for the group.Officials said Abreu pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released on a million bond with home detention as a condition of the bond. Two other men face changes in connection to the bust. Cesar Diaz-Bautista, 43, faces charges of possession with the intent to distribute cocaine, while Junior Ortiz, 29, faces charges of cocaine importation conspiracy.Ortiz was released on a 0,000 bond and Diaz-Bautista will be released on a 0,000 bond, officials said. The other two defendants had not yet been arraigned Monday.Since 2016, law enforcement agents have seized more than 350 kilograms of cocaine belonging to the DTO.“This criminal network allegedly trafficked more than 350 kilos of cocaine and was assisted by an NYPD officer, who used his knowledge and access to help them stay one step ahead of the law,” stated District Attorney Madeline Singas.“There is no place for corruption in the NYPD and it will always be prosecuted fully. We commend our IAB investigators and law enforcement partners in this case,” said Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said in a statement.Abreu has been suspended without pay, according to an NYPD spokesperson. This story was originally published by Kristine Garcia at WPIX. 2159

NEW YORK (AP) — Mail-in voting has gotten off to a rocky start in New York City, where election officials sent out a large number of absentee ballots with the wrong names and addresses on the return envelopes. The faulty ballots were sent to an unknown number of voters in Brooklyn and could result in ballots being voided if voters sign their own name on return envelopes bearing different names. More than 140,000 ballots have already been sent out so far across the borough. It was unclear how many people got the wrong envelopes. The city Board of Elections is blaming the problem on the vendor that was contracted to print and mail the ballots for voters in Brooklyn and Queens. Board of Elections head Michael J. Ryan says the proper ballots and envelopes will get to voters before the Nov. 3 election. But it’s unclear exactly how the city will handle voters who had already mailed their completed ballot back in the provided envelopes.Ryan said elections workers will reach out to voters by social media and, if available, by telephone and email addresses. And he said the board will ensure all received ballots are “appropriately processed” and tallied votes are “properly credited” to voters. 1207

New York City hit a major milestone over the weekend in its fight against the coronavirus after recording its first 24-hour period without a COVID-19 death in months, Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Monday.Speaking during a coronavirus briefing Monday morning, de Blasio warned that COVID-19 is “far from beaten,” especially considering the surge in cases in many cities and states around the country.“No one can celebrate but we can at least take a moment to appreciate that everyone of you did so much to get us to this point: 24 hours when no one died, let's have many more days like that,” the mayor said. “And it’s a reminder, of course, that this disease is such a formidable foe that it’s been months and months since we’ve had a day like this.”Preliminary data from the city Health Department indicates that the period of no COVID-19 deaths was on Saturday. They said on Sunday that the data is subject to change. As of Sunday, New York City had recorded 18,670 lab-confirmed COVID-19 deaths and an additional 4,613 probable deaths related to the virus since the outbreak began in March. There have been 215,924 confirmed cases of the virus across the five boroughs.De Blasio urged New Yorkers not to let up on social distancing or following rules and restrictions related to the outbreak and the state’s phased reopening plan. The mayor also issued new guidance on wearing face coverings indoors.New Yorkers should wear a face covering when around others in an indoor setting that isn't their home, de Blasio said. This story originally reported by Lauren Cook on PIX11.com. 1585

NEW YORK CITY — The "Black Lives Matter" mural that had been painted in front of Trump Tower in Manhattan was vandalized on Monday.Police said that about 12:30 p.m. on Monday, a man dumped red paint on the large yellow mural and fled west on 56th Street. Police described the suspect as a white man wearing a black hat and a black T-shirt.The Department of Transportation repaired the mural Monday evening, Mayor Bill de Blasio said."To whoever vandalized our mural on 5th Avenue: nice try," he tweeted. "The #BlackLivesMatter movement is more than words, and it can't be undone." 588
