SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A local sailor got an emotional holiday surprise thanks to the generosity of some frequent fliers.Navy diesel mechanic Joe Ramsay just learned his brother is flying in for the holidays."Don't really have the words to describe it," said Ramsay.Ramsay has been stationed in San Diego for more than two years. After hernia surgery this summer, his finances got stretched. There would be no trip home to North Carolina for the holidays."I was going to spend it with friends or alone. That was pretty much my plans," said Ramsay.That wasn't the plan for Ramsay's brother Trey, who entered a contest put on by New York entrepreneur Peter Shankman. The businessman decided to collect and donate hundreds of thousands of airline miles in hopes of reuniting families."Just wanted to get to my brother for the holidays. I haven't seen him in a year or so," said Trey Ramsay.In his entry, Trey called his brother "the closest person in my life," adding the family hasn't been able to visit Joe since he arrived in San Diego. San Diegan Rhys Ford, a mystery writer who travels for her job, donated 45,000 miles and two tickets."It's seeing people reuniting. It's the fact that somebody's so excited to get on a plane. For me, it's able being able to give that to somebody," said Ford.All entries were put to a public vote on the website, Imgur. Trey's entry was among the handful to win plane tickets."Surprise and very thankful," said Trey."Just ecstatic, joy and shock," added Ramsay. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego elementary school teacher was arrested this week and accused of distributing child pornography.Authorities arrested 59-year-old David Weaks, a fifth-grade teacher at Rosa Parks Elementary School in City Heights, Thursday and charged with distributing child pornography of young girls, including a toddler, according to a complaint filed by the U.S. District Court, Southern District of California.According to documents, a U.S. Department of Homeland Security special agent was able to download two child pornography videos of young females from Weaks computer through peer-to-peer software.The IP address associated with the download was tracked to a residence in San Diego and a subscriber with the last name of Weaks, the complaint says.Authorities say a search of Weaks' residence and his computer revealed numerous files featuring child pornography.The complaint said Weaks admitted to obtaining and distributing child pornography through the file-sharing software over the internet. He also admitted to possessing similar materials on an external hard drive.Weaks is scheduled for a detention hearing on April 24. The government has requested he be held without bond on the grounds that he "is a danger to the community and a flight risk."He faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and 0,000 fine if convicted. 1421

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new study by the Wounded Warrior Project shows nearly 87% of injured veterans struggle with their weight once they return home.That's up from both 2015 & 2016.Programs in San Diego hope to reverse that trend, helping vets shed pounds and get their lives back."I had to be reminded that I could do it again," said Marlene Krpata.While serving as an Army Captain in Iraq in 2006, a mortar blast badly injured her leg. After three years trying to save it, she decided to have it amputated."The first couple months we’re laying in a bed and not moving at all," she said.Krpata battled PTSD and depression after the blast. She says prescription drugs also slowed her down. So did her diet. She kept eating like she was on active duty, without the active lifestyle is provides."I gained 130 pounds," said Krpata.Krpata got in touch with the Challenged Athletes Foundation, who helped her get a prosthetic leg. Then friends helped her get back into sports.Now, she plays soccer, softball, boxes and runs."I’m not a Paralympian by any sport," she said. "But I stepped on the field and I made it work. I felt a little embarrassed at first, but I’m glad I did it now because it allowed me to progress up to where I was. And it’s fun again."The Wounded Warrior Project also has a wide selection of Health and Wellness Programs. They're designed to teach injured vets about nutrition and exercise. They also help form support groups to deal with depression and anxiety over starting to work out again.In San Diego, there's also the Wounded Warrior Tennis Program. It holds free tennis clinics every Tuesday at Balboa Park for injured vets. It also runs a week-long camp once a year to help jump start veterans who may need extra help.For Krpata, it's been a life-saver. She's lost nearly 60 pounds. But more than that, she feels like herself again."I’m super confident now, enjoying my sports, enjoying myself again as a soldier and leaning down," said Krpata. 1996

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A heartbroken dog owner is demanding answers from a motel in Mission Valley.Mary Prevost left her 4-year-old German Shepherd alone her room Saturday night when she went to dinner then found out later it had been hit and killed on Interstate 8.“I opened my door and my dog wasn’t there,” said Prevost, “I ran down to the front desk and said my dog wasn’t there and the woman said around 8:30 they had seen a dog running around in the parking lot.”Prevost says the motel staff said they tried calling her but they had dialed the wrong number.The dog owner then drove around Mission Valley as Saturday night turned into Sunday morning — then animal control rang.“She apologized and said that a dog that fit my description with a red collar had been hit on the highway and she was on the side of the road,” said Prevost through tears.“I planned to take her to Coronado beach the next day and instead I picked her up dead on the highway,” said PrevostPrevost had 4-year-old Valkyrie cremated on Sunday, but now she is grappling with Motel 6 management about how this happened.Prevost says the motel's risk managers told her the dog likely opened up the door on its own.“If they just called me or animal control or the police,” said Prevost, ”I could have gotten her because she was alive.”She says the hotel has video of the dog wandering the motel and the parking lot, but they won’t let her see it.Motel 6 has denied multiple requests by 10News for comment.Prevost says it just doesn’t seem fair to blame the dog.“The problem is even if she got the door open,” said Prevost, “they just let her go.” 1622
