LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Achieving a feat that a human being might even find difficult, a mountain lion successfully managed to cross the San Diego (405) Freeway in the Sepulveda Pass, National Park Service officials announced Thursday. Researchers believe the lion known as P-61 managed to traverse the freeway from west to east between 2 and 4 a.m. July 19. According to the NPS, another lion named P-18 was fatally struck by a vehicle in the same area of freeway while attempting a crossing in 2011, and another lion that was not being tracked by researchers was struck and killed in 2009. The only other lion known to have crossed the 405 Freeway is Griffith Park's famed resident lion P-22. That lion was not being tracked with a GPS collar at the time, so little is known about where and when he made the trek. Researchers say DNA testing shows P-22 was born in the Santa Monica Mountains, so he must have crossed both the 405 and 101 Freeways to have reached Griffith Park. ``Although P-61 successfully crossed the 405, his feat is a reminder of how challenging Southern California's road network is for mountain lions and other wildlife as well,'' said Jeff Sikich, a biologist with the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. ``Others haven't been so lucky.'' The issue of extensive development and freeways acting as physical barriers to migration have long been identified as threats to the continued survival of mountain lions in the area. At least one study has suggested that the lions will be extinct within 50 years due to the lack of breeding partners, leading to rampant inbreeding among the current population. P-61 now inhabits an area between the 405 and 101 Freeways, where researchers say at least one other lion resides. That lion is not outfitted with a GPS collar and has only been seen on surveillance footage in the area over the past five years. ``It will be interesting to see if P-61 stays in the area, whether he decides to challenge the uncollared lion or if he heads back to the other side of the freeway,'' Sikich said. ``Although it's a relatively small area of habitat, it's certainly larger than the Griffith Park area and does have a patchwork of natural areas.'' LOS ANGELES (KGTV) - The man accused of killing two men, including an LA County Sheriff's Deputy, and going on a four day crimes spree has mounting charges.Thursday Rhett Nelson, 30, from Utah was to be arraigned in LA court, the proceedings postponed until Jully 22.The District Attorney announced more charges are piled on to Nelson's case, including two counts of murder, one count of attempted murder and two counts of second degree robbery.Nelson was taken into custody around 10:40 a.m. Tuesday by Long Beach police in the 2400 block of Granada Avenue and later turned over to Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department investigators, who arrested him. San Diego Police say Nelson is under investigation in connection with five separate convenience store robberies across San Diego County. From June 7-9, four 7-Eleven stores and a Circle K were held up at gunpoint. In each case, the clerk turned over cash and the man left the scene before police arrived.Officers are reviewing surveillance video from the San Diego cases.Nelson is suspected in the shooting of Deputy Joseph Gilbert Solano, who was at the counter of a Jack in the Box restaurant at 2531 W. Valley Blvd. in Alhambra around 5:45 p.m. Monday when he was shot in the back of the head in what sheriff's officials believe was a random attack. LOS ANGELES (AP) — A homeless man is facing a murder charge in what authorities say was a random attack on a California father, who was stabbed in the neck as his 5-year-old daughter sat on his lap in a crowded beachside steakhouse.Jamal Jackson, 49, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of 35-year-old Anthony Mele. He was being held in Ventura County jail on a .5 million bail. It was unclear Saturday if he had an attorney to speak on his behalf.Mele and his wife were eating dinner with their daughter Wednesday at Aloha Steakhouse in Ventura. The girl was sitting on her father's lap when prosecutors say Jackson walked up and stabbed Mele in the neck.Prosecutor Richard Simon said patrons and a restaurant employee followed Jackson out of the restaurant, even though he still had the knife. They kept track of him until police arrived and arrested him.Mele was taken to a hospital and died Thursday after being taken off life support."It's horrible," Simon said. "You don't think you're going to be killed when you go out to dinner at a nice restaurant with your family and you didn't do anything."Simon said the two men had not interacted before the attack."He was just sitting there with his daughter in his lap," Simon said. "You're not supposed to die that way."Mele's loved ones started a GoFundMe page to help raise money for a funeral and to support his wife and daughter.Mele's Facebook page was filled with photos of his daughter and said he was a manager at an AT&T store.Police confirmed Saturday that a bystander reported a man who turned out to be Jackson for disruptive behavior several hours before the stabbing.According to the bystander, a man was yelling on the promenade not far from the restaurant about three hours before the attack.Patrol officers were out on other calls so command center staff monitored the man — who turned out to be Jackson — via a pier security camera system for more than 20 minutes before determining he didn't seem to be a threat, police said.Police are asking anyone who spoke with Jackson during that time to contact investigators.The killing prompted the Ventura City Council to increase police patrols in the area and add staff members to monitor security cameras, among other measures."We are extremely disheartened and infuriated by this criminal attack," Mayor Neal Andrews said in a statement.
