Science centers, Smithsonian centers, and art museums are shutting down amid the spread of coronavirus. On Thursday evening, the Smithsonian museums, galleries and National Zoo will all close on Saturday indefinitely. The news comes as a hit to the D.C., which was also slated to host the Cherry Blossom Festival later in the month. The Smithsonian issued the following statement:"The health and safety of Smithsonian visitors, staff and volunteers is a top priority. We are closely monitoring the coronavirus situation and maintain ongoing communication with local health officials and the Centers for Disease Controland Prevention. Due to the rapidly changing nature of the situation, we are not announcing a reopening date at this time and will provide updates on a week-to-week basis on our websites. Follow the Smithsonian on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter for immediate updates @smithsonian."The situation is similar in New York, where the Metropolitan Museum of Art is shutting down indefinitely. Here is what The Met had to say:"We will be closing all three locations—The Met Fifth Avenue, The Met Breuer, and The Met Cloisters—temporarily starting tomorrow, March 13, to support New York City’s effort to contain the spread of COVID-19. The Museum will undertake a thorough cleaning and plans to announce next steps early next week. While we don’t have any confirmed cases connected to the Museum, we believe that we must do all that we can to ensure a safe and healthy environment for our community which at this time calls for us to minimize gatherings while maintaining the cleanest environment possible. We look forward to soon announcing when we’ll be able to welcome our staff and visitors back to the Museum.” 1738
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker has ordered the state's residents to remain in their homes except for essential needs, joining similar efforts in California and New York to limit the spread of the coronavirus. Pritzker's order announced Friday will still allow the state's 12.6 million residents to seek essentials including groceries and medicine. The order will take effect Saturday. Pritzker had previously ordered all schools statewide to shut down and limited gatherings to 50 people to limit the spread of the coronavirus in the state. He also closed dine-in service at bars and restaurants. 630

R&B singer R. Kelly is due in federal court to enter a plea to an updated federal indictment that includes sex abuse allegations involving a new accuser. The 53-year-old is expected to plead not guilty at Thursday's hearing in Chicago to a superseding indictment unsealed last month that includes multiple counts of child pornography. The reworked charging document is largely the same as the original indictment but includes a reference to a new accuser. The hearing also could be a chance for the judge to push back the trial date. Kelly faces several dozen counts of state and federal sexual misconduct charges in Illinois, Minnesota and New York. He's denied abusing anyone.Photo caption: In this Sept. 17, 2019 file photo, R. State prosecutors said Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2020, that the first of the four Chicago sexual abuse cases against Kelly that they'll take to trial involves a hairdresser who alleges that Kelly tried to force himself on her during a 2003 appointment. Kelly, who remains jailed, faces a raft of charges in several jurisdictions, including four separate indictments on Illinois state charges involving four women who accuse the singer of sexually abusing them during a roughly 10-year period starting in the late 1990s. Public pools in the U.S. will look very different this summer if they open at all with the coronavirus threat still looming. Among the changes pools are planning are putting their mostly teenage lifeguards in charge of maintaining social distancing among patrons and spotting COVID-19 symptoms. Dr. Justin Sempsrott, the medical director for the lifeguard certification program Starguard Elite, says pools also plan to screen patrons' temperatures, require lifeguards to wear masks and significantly reduce the number of swimmers allowed in the water and locker rooms. Industry groups and companies, meanwhile, report that sales of inflatable pools, swimming gear and kayaks are up. 694
